Historical Trends in Intraocular Lens Innovation Through an Analysis of United States Patents, 1972-2000.

One of the great advancements in ophthalmic surgery during the 20th century was the development of the artificial intraocular lens (IOL). There is remarkably little historical information on the trends in IOL innovation based on what inventors believed was worthy of patent protection in the United States (U.S.). We explored the topic of patentable IOL innovations by obtaining information through a global patent database. Patents issued for IOLs in the U.S. during the 20th century were identified. A total of 583 IOL patents were issued in the U.S. last century. Based on creators' justification

Automated instrument-tracking for 4D video-rate imaging of ophthalmic surgical maneuvers.

Intraoperative image-guidance provides enhanced feedback that facilitates surgical decision-making in a wide variety of medical fields and is especially useful when haptic feedback is limited. In these cases, automated instrument-tracking and localization are essential to guide surgical maneuvers and prevent damage to underlying tissue. However, instrument-tracking is challenging and often confounded by variations in the surgical environment, resulting in a trade-off between accuracy and speed. Ophthalmic microsurgery presents additional challenges due to the nonrigid relationship between inst

Fracture behaviour of human skin in deep needle insertion can be captured using validated cohesive zone finite-element method.

Medical needles have shown an appreciable contribution to the development of novel medical devices and surgical technologies. A better understanding of needle-skin interactions can advance the design of medical needles, modern surgical robots, and haptic devices. This study employed finite element (FE) modelling to explore the effect of different mechanical and geometrical parameters on the needle's force-displacement relationship, the required force for the skin puncture, and generated mechanical stress around the cutting zone. To this end, we established a cohesive FE model, and identified i

Contact mechanics between the human finger and a touchscreen under electroadhesion.

The understanding and control of human skin contact against technological substrates is the key aspect behind the design of several electromechanical devices. Among these, surface haptic displays that modulate the friction between the human finger and touch surface are emerging as user interfaces. One such modulation can be achieved by applying an alternating voltage to the conducting layer of a capacitive touchscreen to control electroadhesion between its surface and the finger pad. However, the nature of the contact interactions between the fingertip and the touchscreen under electroadhesion

Perceptions of the use of a 3D-printed manufactured educational simulator for incisions and sutures.

BACKGROUND: The acquisition of clinical and surgical skills is fundamental to dental training. Traditional methods such as cadaveric dissection and porcine models face ethical, logistical, and reproducibility challenges. In this study, we evaluate a novel 3D-printed simulator produced with Polyjet technology for incision and suture training and compare its educational value to that of animal models. METHODS: A total of 69 participants—27 undergraduate students, 19 postgraduate students and 23 expert oral surgeons— tested 30 identical simulators at Paris-Cité University. The simulators were cre

How to Make the Skin Contact Area Controllable by Optical Calibration in Wearable Tactile Displays of Softness.

Virtual reality systems may benefit from wearable (fingertip-mounted) haptic displays capable of rendering the softness of virtual objects. According to neurophysiological evidence, the easiest reliable way to render a virtual softness is to generate purely tactile (as opposed to kinaesthetic) feedback to be delivered via a finger-pulp-interfaced deformable surface. Moreover, it is necessary to control not only the skin indentation depth by applying quasi-static (non-vibratory) contact pressures, but also the skin contact area. This is typically impossible with available devices, even with tho

EarVR: Using Ear Haptics in Virtual Reality for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People.

Virtual Reality (VR) has a great potential to improve skills of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) people. Most VR applications and devices are designed for persons without hearing problems. Therefore, DHH persons have many limitations when using VR. Adding special features in a VR environment, such as subtitles, or haptic devices will help them. Previously, it was necessary to design a special VR environment for DHH persons. We introduce and evaluate a new prototype called "EarVR" that can be mounted on any desktop or mobile VR Head-Mounted Display (HMD). EarVR analyzes 3D sounds in a VR environm

The MAPS: Toward a Novel Mobility Assistance System for Visually Impaired People.

This paper introduces the design of a novel indoor and outdoor mobility assistance system for visually impaired people. This system is named the MAPS (Mobility Assistance Path Planning and orientation in Space), and it is based on the theoretical frameworks of mobility and spatial cognition. Its originality comes from the assistance of two main functions of navigation: locomotion and wayfinding. Locomotion involves the ability to avoid obstacles, while wayfinding involves the orientation in space and ad hoc path planning in an (unknown) environment. The MAPS architecture proposes a new low-cos

Clinical Basis for Creating an Osseointegrated Neural Interface.

As technology continues to improve within the neuroprosthetic landscape, there has been a paradigm shift in the approach to amputation and surgical implementation of haptic neural prosthesis for limb restoration. The Osseointegrated Neural Interface (ONI) is a proposed solution involving the transposition of terminal nerves into the medullary canal of long bones. This design combines concepts of neuroma formation and prevention with osseointegration to provide a stable environment for conduction of neural signals for sophisticated prosthetic control. While this concept has previously been expl

Comparing object lifting kinematics and the size-weight illusion between physical reality and virtual reality.

This study compared the size-weight illusion (SWI) and object lifting kinematics between physical and virtual conditions, shedding light on the nuanced disparities in perception and action across different environmental mediums. We examined whether prior expectations about object weight based on size cues, which affect the experience of real-world object interactions, are different in virtual reality (VR). Employing a highly realistic virtual environment with precisely matched visual size and haptic cues, we tested the hypothesis that VR, which may be experienced as uncertain, unfamiliar, or u

The teaching and assessment of local anaesthesia in UK dental schools.

INTRODUCTION: Local anaesthesia (LA) is fundamental to successful dental treatment. Graduating hygienists, therapist and dentists should be confident and proficient in delivering LA. There is one previously published article reviewing LA teaching in United Kingdom (UK) dental schools in 2016, and at this time 10 out of 14 schools allowed peer-to-peer administration. The method of teaching LA administration has become an area of debate in terms of legality and morality given the potential complications and issues with valid consent. The aim of the study was to explore current teaching practices

An ocular surface prosthesis for keratoglobus and Terrien's marginal degeneration.

PURPOSE: This case report describes the challenges in fitting corneas using the prosthetic replacement of ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) device in a unique case of bilateral keratoglobus (KG) with Terrien's marginal degeneration (TMD). CASE REPORT: KG and TMD are uncommon corneal ectatic conditions, characterized by protrusion and thinning of the cornea. Optical correction with spectacles is limited, as this may not provide the best-corrected visual acuity because of irregular corneal astigmatism. Corneal gas-permeable lenses can provide optimal vision, but they have poor fitting characteri

Robotics and general surgery.

Robotics are now being used in all surgical fields, including general surgery. By increasing intra-abdominal articulations while operating through small incisions, robotics are increasingly being used for a large number of visceral and solid organ operations, including those for the gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, and rectum, as well as for the endocrine organs. Robotics and general surgery are blending for the first time in history and as a specialty field should continue to grow for many years to come. We continuously demand solutions to questions and limitations that are

Bimanual Manipulation of Steady-Hand Eye Robots with Adaptive Sclera Force Control: Cooperative vs. Teleoperation Strategies.

Performing retinal vein cannulation (RVC) as a potential treatment for retinal vein occlusion (RVO) without the assistance of a surgical robotic system is very challenging to do safely. The main limitation is the physiological hand tremor of surgeons. Robot-assisted eye surgery technology may resolve the problems of hand tremors and fatigue and improve the safety and precision of RVC. The Steady-Hand Eye Robot (SHER) is an admittance-based robotic system that can filter out hand tremors and enables ophthalmologists to manipulate a surgical instrument inside the eye cooperatively. However, the
