Using a general model of personality to identify the basic elements of psychopathy.

In the present paper, we outline why we believe that factor analyses of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist Revised (Hare, 2003) are unlikely to yield the basic elements of psychopathy. As an alternative approach, we suggest embedding psychopathy within a broad model of general personality functioning, namely the five factor model (McCrae & Costa, 1990). Drawing on our previous work in the area using expert ratings, correlational approaches, and a "translation" of the PCL-R, we provide a consensus description of the core elements of psychopathy: extremely high interpersonal antagonism, pan-impulsiv

[Cervicofacial manifestations of tularemia. Apropos of a familial case].

Tularemia is a rare infectious disease, due to Francisella tularensis, a virulent bacterium transmitted by a carrier insect (essentially ticks) or by the meat of an infected animal (generally hares). We report 3 cases that occurred in the same family, showing the various symptoms of this disease. Revealing head and neck manifestations may mislead diagnosis.

Intimate Partner Aggression Committed by Prison Inmates with Psychopathic Profile.

Psychopathy and intimate partner aggression (IPA) are two concepts that usually appear concomitantly. Male violence toward women is often considered a psychopathic trait that sometimes involves the woman's homicide by her partner and, at other times, attempted homicide. This phenomenon has been studied by conducting interviews following Hare's model with 92 men incarcerated under a compliance regime in a Spanish prison (Córdoba). The results detected six explanatory factors of IPA as a result of attempted homicide or homicide: criminal past and delinquency, impulsivity, the need to stand out f

Enhancement of Vagal Tone, Cognitive Processing, and Self-Regulation Through Short-Term Audible Mantram Repetition Practice in Novice Meditators.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic stress, widely acknowledged as a cause of lifestyle-related diseases, is associated with impaired relaxation capacity, reduced heart rate variability, and diminished emotional resilience and self-regulation. This study investigated the effects of short-term daily audible repetition of the Hare Krishna Mantram on heart rate variability, psychological resilience, and cognitive processing among novice practitioners in a university health care setting. METHODS: This is a randomized three-group study of healthy, meditation-naïve participants in a health care setting (mean age 2

Viraemic transmission of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus to ticks.

In order to determine the way in which vertebrates infected with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus and potential ixodid tick vectors interact in nature, immature and adult ticks of several species were fed on viraemic mammals and then assayed for virus content at varying times after feeding. CCHF virus was not isolated from ticks of six species tested after feeding as adults and immature forms on sheep with viraemia of 10(2.5-3.2) LD 50/ml, nor from larval ticks fed on guinea-pigs and white-tailed rats with viraemia of 10(1.9-2.7) LD 50/ml. In contrast, virus was isolated from 10 o

Louping ill virus in the UK: a review of the hosts, transmission and ecological consequences of control.

Louping ill virus (LIV) is a tick-borne flavivirus that is part of the tick-borne encephalitis complex of viruses (TBEV) and has economic and welfare importance by causing illness and death in livestock, especially sheep, Ovies aries, and red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus, an economically valuable gamebird. Unlike Western TBEV which is found primarily in woodlands and is reservoired by small rodents, LIV is not generally transmitted by small rodents but instead by sheep, red grouse and mountain hares and, therefore, is associated with upland heather moorland and rough grazing land. Red grou

The evolution of unique cranial traits in leporid lagomorphs.

BACKGROUND: The leporid lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) are adapted to running and leaping (some more than others) and consequently have unique anatomical features that distinguish them from ochotonid lagomorphs (pikas) and from their rodent relatives. Two traits that have received some attention are fenestration of the lateral wall of the maxilla and facial tilting. These features are known to correlate with specialised locomotory form in that the faster running species will generally have fenestration that occupies the dorsal and the anteroventral surface of the maxillary corpus and a more ac

Revisiting the largest human leishmaniasis outbreak in Western Europe (Madrid, Spain): a follow-up entomological study in 2023 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: During the 2010s, Madrid experienced an outbreak of human leishmaniasis by Leishmania infantum, which affected at least 824 people until 2024 and peaked between 2010 and 2012. It was associated with a high density of infected Phlebotomus perniciosus sand fly vectors and, unusually, with rabbits and hares as the primary parasite reservoirs. In 2023 and 2024 we investigated sand fly species distribution, L. infantum infection rates, and bloodmeal sources in the outbreak area and compared the results with a similar study conducted in 2012-2014. METHODS: The four sand fly surveillance

Role of Lagomorpha in the wild cycle of Rickettsia conorii in Salamanca (Spain).

In an endemic zone for Mediterranean spotted fever levels of antibodies to R. conorii were evaluated in serum samples from wild rabbits (Orytolagus cuniculus) and hares (Lepus granatensis) using an indirect microimmunofluorescence antibody test. The results of the study show that the wild rabbit may carry out in this area an important function in the maintenance of R. conorii in nature.

A case of typhoidal tularemia in a male Japanese farmer.

In Japan, most tularemia cases occur after contact with hares (hunting, cooking) and involve the glandular or ulceroglandular form. Here, we present a case of typhoidal tularemia in a 72-year-old Japanese male farmer who presented with fever, fatigue, and right lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed intestinal wall thickening at the ascending colon, pleural effusion, and ascites. Following an initial diagnosis of bacterial enteric infection, his symptoms deteriorated after a week-long cephalosporin treatment course. The patient lived in an area endemic for scrub typhus; the antibio

Absence of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in wild lagomorphs and their ticks in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is an emerging tick-borne pathogen in different European countries. Since 2013, clinical and fatality cases associated with CCHFV infection have been reported in humans in Spain. During the last few years, endemic circulation of this virus has been detected in ticks and wild ungulates in this country, but the role of other sympatric wild species in the sylvatic cycle of this multi-host virus remains poorly understood. The aims of the present study were to assess exposure to CCHFV in wild lagomorphs in southern Spain, a CCHFV endemic area, and to de
