INTRODUCTION: Parental provision of alcohol to children is associated with a range of negative outcomes. Public health campaigns discouraging this practice are required as part of a comprehensive approach to reduce alcohol-related harm among minors, however, limited research has examined the relative effectiveness of different messaging approaches. This study compared the effects of two campaigns with different executional styles on parents' intentions to provide alcohol to minors-one campaign used a fear-based approach and the other adopted a first-person narrative approach.

PURPOSE: Fueled by the prescription opioid overdose crisis and increased influx of illicitly manufactured fentanyl, fentanyl overdoses continue to be a public health crisis that has cost the US economy over $1 trillion in reduced productivity, health care, family assistance, criminal justice, and accounted for over 74,000 deaths in 2023. A recent demographic shift in the opioid crisis has led to a rise in overdose deaths among the Latinx population. Harm reduction interventions, including the use of naloxone and fentanyl test strips, have been shown to be effective measures at reducing the num

People who inject drugs (PWID) experience severe substance-related harms and yet have low rates of engagement in substance use disorder treatment. Low-barrier and telepsychology interventions represent promising strategies for engaging PWID in treatment, but few studies have tested the feasibility of these approaches among non-treatment-seeking PWID. A behavioral activation (BA) treatment for substance use was adapted through a harm reduction lens to assist PWID in working toward healthy, meaningful lives and achieving their goals. This study aims to: (a) describe the development and harm redu

BACKGROUND: An online mail order naloxone and harm reduction supply program was created by an interdisciplinary team at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and hosted on the university website (UNIV). The program was subsequently funded by the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) and added to the DOH website. This study compares demographic characteristics of the two populations submitting requests through the program's distinct access points, UNIV and DOH, to those of populations at-risk for overdose.

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-2010s, slamsex-sexualized drug use involving intravenously injecting meth-has rapidly emerged in metropolitan gay communities as a sociosexual practice necessitating harm reduction interventions. However, its impact on gay men's sociosexual lives and HIV technologies is not well understood. This paper addresses this gap by investigating two intertwined temporal dimensions of slamsex, viewing it as a form of slow edgework in post-AIDS Taiwan.
METHODS: Ethnographic research was conducted in Taiwan between 2022 and 2024, involving 30 interviews with gay men who practice

Deaf education research and practice have not always lived up to the ideal of improving deaf students' lives. Consequently, we have constructed novel arguments supporting deaf pedagogy using pragmatic ethics, the aim of which is to increase benefit and decrease harm to individuals and society. The ideal of harm reduction asks the pragmatist to pursue the path of action least likely to result in injury to others. Besides applying ideas that reduce harm, educators must also increase benefits for deaf students. Our analysis synthesizes Vygotskian perspectives on deaf pedagogy and pragmatic ideals

BACKGROUND: Harm reduction services such as safer injection supply distribution are essential to reducing morbidity and mortality among people who use drugs (PWUD); however, local use of harm reduction supplies (e.g., tourniquets, saline solution) is difficult to routinely and systematically monitor. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a systematic social observation tool designed to assess use of harm reduction supplies at the street block level.
METHODS: Data collection took place on a random sample of 150 blocks located throughout the Kensington neighborhood of North Phil

INTRODUCTION: Xylazine, an α2-adrenoceptor agonist sedative commonly used in veterinary medicine, is not approved for human use. Nevertheless, xylazine-involved overdose rates have surged in recent years, fueled by an increasingly toxic and synthetic illicit drug supply in North America.
METHODS: This narrative review assessed major epidemiological trends in xylazine-involved overdoses in North America, aiming to identify harm reduction priorities. A literature search was conducted using four bibliographic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect) and three preprint servers (medRx

BACKGROUND: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis use social practices often involved sharing prepared cannabis (joints/blunts/cigarettes) and cannabis-related paraphernalia. Previous studies have demonstrated that sharing paraphernalia for cannabis, tobacco, and crack cocaine is a risk factor for respiratory viral and bacterial infections. Although COVID-19 is a respiratory viral infection that spreads through droplets and airborne transmission, it is unclear if many individuals adopted harm reduction practices around sharing cannabis. This study: quantifies the prevalence of sharing prepa

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use is known to contribute significantly to the spread of the HIV epidemic in many parts of the developing world. Due to the hidden nature and stigma of the problem, it is difficult to study using routine surveys. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the number of people who inject drugs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and to describe the epidemiological and social situation related to HIV among people who inject drugs.
METHODS: The study used rapid assessment methods, followed by combined methods of estimating populations, using nomination and multiplier methods. The c

BACKGROUND: In response to the spread of HIV caused by needle sharing among injection drug users (IDUs), the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control implemented a pilot harm reduction program in 2005 that expanded nationwide in 2006. The policy led to a significant reduction in the number of HIV-positive cases among IDUs in 4 years.
METHODS: This article aims to provide a critical evaluation of this harm reduction policy in Taiwan. The research leading to this article included a thorough literature review and in-depth interviews with 31 active policy participants, including people working in hospi

BACKGROUND: Abstinence-based alcohol interventions are minimally desirable to and effective for chronically homeless individuals with alcohol dependence who have multimorbidity and high publicly funded service utilization and associated costs. Lower-barrier, patient-centered combined pharmacobehavioral interventions may more effectively treat this population. Harm reduction counseling involves a nonjudgmental, empathic style and patient-driven goal setting that requires neither abstinence nor use reduction. AIM: To explore the facilitators of long-term hepatitis C avoidance among people who inject drugs.
DESIGN: We employed a qualitative life history design.
SETTING: Recruitment took place through low-threshold drug services and drug user networks in South East and North London. Participants were interviewed at the recruitment services or in their homes.
PARTICIPANTS: The sample comprised 35 people who inject drugs, 20 of whom were hepatitis C antibody-negative. Participants' average injecting trajectory was 19 years (6-33), with 66% primarily injecting heroin, and 34% a crack and heroin mix.

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed the perspective of users enrolled in a harm reduction program that provides syringe exchange, an educational room for «warmth and coffee», a methadone maintenance program, a room for supervised drug consumption, a place for personal hygiene, and medical and psychosocial follow-up. The particularity of this program lies in its integration within an outpatient drug treatment center forming part of a general hospital.
METHODS: We performed a descriptive study using qualitative methods. Theoretical sampling was conducted. Twelve in-depth interviews and one focus group comp

Quantitative survey data indicate that most drug users starting treatment want abstinence rather than harm reduction (McKeganey et al., 2004). This finding has been seized upon by those seeking 'evidence' that abstinence is the bedrock of recovery and harm reduction is a negative and oppositional philosophy. However, all research involves questions of meaning, definition and value and an alternative research paradigm and different study design can provide important additional insights into treatment aspirations, including the desire for abstinence. Qualitative interviews conducted with 30 reco

Light and ultra-light cigarettes are associated with little or no risk reduction versus regular cigarettes, but the majority of smokers believe they are safer. We evaluated whether nurses believe that certain products (light and ultra-light cigarettes, reduced-tar cigarettes, nicotine replacement), cigarette design features (filters, no additives), and smoking behaviors (smoking reduction) reduce health risks among their patients. Nurses (N = 178; 93% female, 10% smokers) completed questionnaires before mandatory training in smoking cessation counseling. Among respondents, 25% believed that li

Group sex, which encompasses sexual activity among more than two people, is prevalent across diverse genders and sexualities. For many of its participants, group sex is an important source of pleasure and belonging. However, it is most often studied in the context of STI risk and related harm reduction, which isolates STI-related harm reduction behaviors from broader community norms and culture, obscuring important community dynamics. In the present study, we investigated a broad range of harm reduction practices employed by group sex participants in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Thro

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists provide a broad range of harm reduction services, with service uptake often influenced by state-based policies. This study aimed to map the provision of harm reduction services and determine predictors of increased uptake among community pharmacies.
METHODS: An anonymous online survey of Australian community pharmacists collected data on pharmacist and pharmacy characteristics and the provision of harm reduction services, and explored pharmacy-level characteristics associated with the provision of greater harm reduction services.
RESULTS: The sample comprised 730 phar
