The Hammer and the Nail: Biomechanics of Striking and Struck Canadian University Football Players.

This study sought to evaluate head accelerations in both players involved in a football collision. Players on two opposing Canadian university teams were equipped with helmet mounted sensors during one game per season, for two consecutive seasons. A total of 276 collisions between 58 instrumented players were identified via video and cross-referenced with sensor timestamps. Player involvement (striking and struck), impact type (block or tackle), head impact location (front, back, left and right), and play type were recorded from video footage. While struck players did not experience significan

Helmet Therapy for Positional Plagiocephaly: A Systematic Review of the Tools Used to Diagnose, Offer Treatment Recommendations, and Assess Treatment Outcomes of the Condition.

BACKGROUND: Positional plagiocephaly (PP) is an asymmetric deformation of the skull as a consequence of external forces acting on a normal and pliable skull. The prevalence of PP ranges between 19.6% and 46.6%. Treatment options for PP include repositioning, physical therapy, and helmet orthoses. Consensus regarding the treatment of PP remains elusive due to the condition's imprecise natural history, dissimilar diagnostic strategies, and unreliable data asserting treatments' efficacy. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review of the tools used to diagnose, suggest treatment strategies, and as

A Review of Cyclist Head Injury, Impact Characteristics and the Implications for Helmet Assessment Methods.

Head injuries are common for cyclists involved in collisions. Such collision scenarios result in a range of injuries, with different head impact speeds, angles, locations, or surfaces. A clear understanding of these collision characteristics is vital to design high fidelity test methods for evaluating the performance of helmets. We review literature detailing real-world cyclist collision scenarios and report on these key characteristics. Our review shows that helmeted cyclists have a considerable reduction in skull fracture and focal brain pathologies compared to non-helmeted cyclists, as well

An Investigation into Helmet Use, Perceptions of Sports-Related Concussion, and Seeking Medical Care for Head Injury amongst Competitive Cyclists.

The purpose of this study was to investigate competitive cyclists' helmet use, perceptions of sports-related concussion (SRC), and medical-care-seeking behaviors. A mixed-method approach was used with qualitative and quantitative data presented. The study comprised of a cross-sectional analysis of 405 competitive cyclists who completed an online survey. Results indicated that most participants believed a bicycle helmet protects against SRC (79.5%) and considerable numbers of participants would not seek medical care for potential head injury in scenarios where this would be recommended. It was

Trauma Surgeon-Led and Funded Injury Prevention Program Decreases Admission for Motorcycle Crash Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Unhelmeted motorcyclists injured in states with lax or poorly enforced helmet safety laws are frequently seen in rural trauma centers. A trauma surgeon started a comprehensive injury prevention and research fund with outreach to a three-state trauma center catchment area promoting injury prevention at area high schools and local communities. We hypothesized that unhelmeted riders would have more severe head injuries and fatalities than helmeted riders. METHODS: A trauma registry review of 708 injured motorcycle riders over an 11-year period examined demographics, helmet use, and c

A Computational Study of Liquid Shock Absorption for Prevention of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), more colloquially known as concussion, is common in contact sports such as American football, leading to increased scrutiny of head protective gear. Standardized laboratory impact testing, such as the yearly National Football League (NFL) helmet test, is used to rank the protective performance of football helmets, motivating new technologies to improve the safety of helmets relative to existing equipment. In this work, we hypothesized that a helmet which transmits a nearly constant minimum force will result in a reduced risk of mTBI. To evaluate the plausibi

Evaluation of the head protection effectiveness of cyclist helmets using full-scale computational biomechanics modelling of cycling accidents.

INTRODUCTION: Cycling is a popular choice for urban transportation. Helmets are important and the most popular means of head protection for cyclists. However, a debate about the effectiveness of helmets in protecting a cyclist's head from injury continues. METHOD: We employed computational biomechanics methods to analyze the head protection effectiveness of nine off-the-shelf-helmets for two typical impact scenarios that occur in cycling accidents: cyclist's head impacting a kerb (kerb-impact) and cyclist skidding (skidding impact) on the road surface. We conducted drop tests for all nine ana

Deriving functional safety (ISO 26262) S-parameters for vulnerable road users from national crash data.

Currently, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated vehicles (AV) are designed for use in the existing road infrastructure. These partially and fully automated vehicles will be operated in a shared space not only with other vehicles but also with vulnerable road users (VRU). Even though crashes between ADAS equipped vehicles or AV and VRU seem inevitable in such a scenario, functional safety, i.e., the assessment of the quality and safety level of the automation system, plays a crucial role in minimizing the crash frequency and the injury severity. We develop a data-driven appro

The biomechanics of concussive helmet-to-ground impacts in the National Football league.

This paper presents a detailed characterization of helmet-to-ground impacts in the National Football League. Video analysis was performed for 16 head-to-ground impacts that caused concussions. Average resultant closing velocity was 8.3 m/s at an angle nearly 45° to the surface. Preimpact rotational velocity of the helmet ranged from negligible to as high as 54.1 rad/s. Helmet impacts were concentrated on the posterior and lateral aspects. To study the interaction in greater detail, a helmeted anthropomorphic test device (ATD) was launched over a football field and fell to the ground in various

Face shield design against blast-induced head injuries.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury has been on the rise in recent years because of the increasing use of improvised explosive devices in conflict zones. Our study investigates the response of a helmeted human head subjected to a blast of 1 atm peak overpressure, for cases with and without a standard polycarbonate (PC) face shield and for face shields comprising of composite PC and aerogel materials and with lateral edge extension. The novel introduction of aerogel into the laminate face shield is explored and its wave-structure interaction mechanics and performance in blast mitigation is ana

Helmets, head injury and concussion in sport.

Research on the mechanism of concussion in recent years has been focused on the mechanism of injury as well as strategies to minimize or reverse injury. Sports-related head injury research has led to the development of head protective gear that has evolved over the years. Headgears have been designed to protect athletes from skull fractures, subdural hemorrhages and concussions. Over the years, through experience of athletes and continued scientific research, improvements in helmet design have been made. Although these advances have decreased the number of catastrophic injuries throughout spor

A method of evaluating helmet rotational acceleration protection using the Kingston Impact Simulator (KIS Unit).

OBJECTIVE: Helmet use is the primary form of head protection against traumatic brain injury. Although helmet designs have proven to be effective in reducing the incidence of skull fracture and major traumatic brain injury, there is little evidence that helmets protect against concussion. Linear and rotational accelerations are important mechanisms underlying concussion, yet current testing protocols do not account for rotational acceleration. Technical considerations have prevented a valid, accurate, and reproducible testing paradigm. Our objectives were to design a novel helmet-testing method
