Journal of military, veteran and family health2023eng
Headache disorders, such as migraine and cluster headache, are common conditions that are accompanied by significant disability and poor quality of life. Military members and Veterans are at increased risk of developing headache disorders, particularly in the context of traumatic brain injury. Although there are several treatment options for headache management, poor efficacy, tolerability, or access limit their success, and there is always a need to identify new treatments in headache medicine. The therapeutic effects of psychedelic drugs for headache disorders have been reported for decades.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether web searching for headache disorders presents some circannual rhythm.
BACKGROUND: Studies support the influence of seasonal rhythms in primary headache disorders such as cluster headache (CH) and episodic migraine. We investigated whether internet users' searching for headaches reflect these circannual rhythms.
METHODS: This was an internet-based study using the Google Trends (Google) platform. The 10-year interest across four related topics (headache, migraine, tension-type headache [TTH], and CH) in 31 European countries was scanned.
RESULTS: Significant

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders are highly prevalent worldwide, and familial occurrence and heredity are contributory factors attracting the interest of epidemiological researchers. Our purpose, in a large sample drawn nationwide from the Chinese general population, was to evaluate the frequency of similar headache in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of those with different headache types.
METHODS: This was a questionnaire-based nationwide cross-sectional door-to-door survey using cluster random-sampling, selecting one adult (18-65 years) per household. Headache was diagnosed by ICHD-II criteria.

BACKGROUND: The supportive clinical and pathophysiological data about the correlation between migraine and atopic disorders are far from a coincidence. In order to determine and investigate the correlates of atopic disorders in a specific dataset, we performed this retrospective cross-sectional clinical-based study.
METHODS: The dataset was composed from three tertiary center web-based databases (http://www.childhoodheadache.org). Headache diagnosis and differential diagnosis were made according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd version and the Diagnostic Statisti

BACKGROUND: To investigate the associations of aural symptoms, headache and depression with the presence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms in a young adult population in Japan.
METHODS: A personal interview survey was conducted on first-year university students (n = 1,930) regarding symptoms of TMD, aural problems, headache, shoulder pain and depression. Logistic regression was applied to assess the associations of these problems with the presence of TMD symptoms after controlling for age and gender.
RESULTS: Among the 1,930 students, 543 students exhibited TMD symptoms and were c

AIMS: To assess the prevalence of primary headaches (HA) in adults with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) who were assessed in a specialty orofacial pain clinic, as well as in controls without TMD.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 158 individuals with TMD seen at a university-based specialty clinic, as well as 68 controls. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD were used to diagnose the TMD patients. HAs were assessed using a structured interview and classified according to the Second Edition of the International Classification for Headache Disorders. Data were analyzed by chi-square tests

Adrenomedullin (ADM) is closely related to calcitonin gene-related peptide, which has a known causative role in migraine. Animal studies have strongly suggested that ADM has a vasodilatory effect within the cerebral circulation. For these reasons, ADM is also likely to be involved in migraine. However, the hypothetical migraine-inducing property and effect on human cerebral circulation of ADM have not previously been investigated. Human ADM (0.08 microg kg(-1) min(-1)) or placebo (saline 0.9%) was administered as a 20-min intravenous infusion to 12 patients suffering from migraine without aura

Several epidemiological studies have shown the presence of comorbidity between various types of sleep disorders and different headache subtypes. Migraine without aura is a sensitive risk factor for disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (odds ratio (OR) 8.2500), and chronic tension-type headache for sleep breathing disorders (OR 15.231), but headache disorder is a cumulative risk factor for disorders of excessive somnolence (OR 15.061). This result has not been reported in the clinical literature.

It has been estimated that 30% to 80% of the population has at least one tension-type headache each year. Tension-type headaches can be located in any region of the head, which can confuse a differential diagnosis with temporomandibular joint disorders and cervical dysfunction. The roles of temporomandibular joint disorders and cervical dysfunction in tension-type headache are evaluated. Definitions, pathophysiology, and treatment considerations for each are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Surveys using questionnaires to collect epidemiologic data may be subject to misclassification. Here, we analyzed a headache questionnaire to evaluate which questions led to a classification other than migraine.
METHODS: Anonymized surveys coupled with medical claims data from individuals 19-74 years old were obtained from DeSC Healthcare Inc. to examine proportions of patients with primary headache disorders (i.e.; migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache, and "other headache disorders"). Six criteria that determined migraine were used to explore how people with other he

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a short, structured multimodal day-clinic program on health-related quality of life and disability in patients with primary headache disorders.
BACKGROUND: Although monoclonal antibodies targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) pathway have substantially advanced migraine prophylaxis, a large proportion of patients remain insufficiently controlled. Residual disability, comorbidities, and contraindications highlight the need for complementary nonpharmacological approaches. Multimodal programs combining medical, psychological, and behavioral str

BACKGROUND: Prevention of headache disorders (HDs) among healthcare workers in hospital settings remains a challenge for organizations and employees worldwide. The goals of the present retrospective study were both to analyze the 1-year prevalence of any primary HDs among female registered nurses (RNs) employed in hospital settings and to investigate the relationship between occupational risk factors and HDs.
METHODS: We analyzed the occupational medicine database of RNs employed in a large hospital. The sample included 975 female RNs; the diagnostic criteria were based on the International C

Headache in intracranial disorders drives significant disability in our patients. Management principles for secondary headaches require a multidisciplinary approach with expertise from the neurological, neuro-ophthalmological, neuroradiological, and neurosurgical specialities. The Pressure of Headache was the theme of the annual United Kingdom CSF Disorders Day and saw speakers and panellists from Australia, Europe, and the United States. Among the topics presented were the newest concepts underpinning idiopathic intracranial hypertension management and spontaneous intracranial hypotension. Ad

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders have been associated with anxiety and depressive disorders. The aim of this study was to assess symptoms of anxiety and depression in a large sample of individuals with different headache disorders (HDs) in order to determine whether their frequency differs by headache type.
METHODS: Consecutive individuals with headache attending a headache outpatient clinic were interviewed with the HAM-D and HAM-A, along with age, sex, and education matched non-headache individuals.
RESULTS: Individuals numbering 2673 with headache (females 71.2%) and 464 non-headache indivi

BACKGROUND: Intravenous immune globulin (IVIg) is frequently used in some neurological diseases and is also the first-line therapy in Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and multifocal motor neuropathy. We aimed to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of headaches, which is one of the most common side effects of IVIg treatment.
METHODS: Patients who received IVIg treatment for neurological diseases were prospectively enrolled in 23 centers. Firstly, the characteristics of patients with and without IVIg-induced headaches were analyzed statistically

INTRODUCTION: The use of lidocaine (lignocaine) and ketamine infusion in the inpatient treatment of patients with headache disorders is supported by small case series. We undertook a retrospective cohort study in order to assess the efficacy, duration and safety of lidocaine and ketamine infusions.
METHODS: Patients admitted between 01/01/2018 and 31/07/2021 were identified by ICD code and electronic prescription. Efficacy of infusion was determined by reduction in visual analog score (VAS), and patient demographics were collected from review of the hospital electronic medical record.

Introduction: Experimental animal studies have revealed mechanisms that link cortical spreading depression (CSD) to the trigeminal activation mediating lateralized headache. However, conventional CSD as seen in lissencephalic brain is insufficient to explain some clinical features of aura and migraine headache.Areas covered: The importance of CSD in headache development including dysfunction of the thalamocortical network, neuroinflammation, calcitonin gene-related peptide, transgenic models, and the role of CSD in migraine triggers, treatment options, neuromodulation, and future directions ar

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Headache disorders in children and adolescents are common. Among the different headache disorders, migraine and tension headache are highly prevalent and often debilitating. Pharmacological treatments for pediatric patients are often not approved or effective. Practice guidelines for prevention of pediatric headache and migraine are now incorporating information and recommendations regarding non-pharmacologic therapeutic options. Understanding the mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of the non-pharmacologic as well as mindful-based therapeutic alternatives currently av

Sleep disorders and primary headaches are frequent health problems in childhood, and they are often comorbid in an individual, linked by a mutual and complex relationship. This comorbidity is frequent and well-documented, but the available literature is usually biased in favor of one aspect or another, mainly depending on the expertise of the authors. The aim of this paper is to review existing literature on the diagnostic assessment of comorbid primary headaches and sleep disorders, so as to propose practical suggestions to accurately investigate the presence of comorbid conditions in childre
