Level of health literacy in Latvia and Lithuania: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Measuring and understanding the level of health literacy serves as a starting point for developing various policies in health care. The consequences of weak health literacy competencies are severe; they result in riskier health behaviour, poorer health status, more frequent emergency visits and hospitalizations. This research has three aims: i) measure the level of health literacy in the populations of Latvia and Lithuania; ii) investigate which demographic and socioeconomic determinants are associated with it; and iii) discuss the means of improving its current level. METHODS: We

A low level of health literacy is a predictor of corticophobia in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are the mainstay of treatment in atopic dermatitis (AD) flares. The fears and worries concerning TCS are known as corticophobia. Corticophobia is common in patients with AD and can lead to suboptimal TCS application and treatment failure. Health literacy (HL) may influence corticophobia. TOPICOP© and HLS-EU-PT questionnaires have been developed to evaluate corticophobia and HL, respectively. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the relationship between corticophobia and the degree of HL in patients with AD. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study with AD patients

Development and Validation of a Heart Failure-Specific Health Literacy Scale.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is an important concept for patient education and disease management with heart failure (HF). However, research on HL has predominantly focused on functional HL (ability to read and write). The World Health Organization advocates evaluating comprehensive HL, including the ability to access information (communicative HL) and critically evaluate that information (critical HL). OBJECTIVE: We developed an instrument for measuring functional, communicative, and critical levels of HL in patients with HF. METHODS: We evaluated the reliability and validity of those 3

Examining Health Literacy Levels in Homeless Persons and Vulnerably Housed Persons with Mental Health Disorders.

Health care use is high in persons who are homeless and vulnerably housed, but their health literacy (ability to read and understand health information) is often not known. The purpose of this study was to determine health literacy rates in a Canadian population of homeless and vulnerably housed individuals with mental health disorders. Higher levels of health literacy were associated with being housed, higher levels of education, non-psychotic mental health diagnoses and lower levels of drug use. This suggests that health literacy may be a potential barrier for accessing and utilizing health

Improving Discharge Instructions: Systematic Review of Language and Health Literacy Interventions.

CONTEXT: Effective pediatric inpatient discharge relies on clear, responsive communication to support safe transitions from hospital to home. Families who use a language other than English and those with lower health literacy experience disproportionate barriers during discharge, contributing to inequities in postdischarge outcomes. Despite recognition of these disparities, evidence guiding interventions remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To identify and evaluate interventions designed to address language and health literacy barriers in pediatric inpatient discharge, assess their impact on patien

Gamified Digital Solutions for Tinnitus Health Literacy: The Erasmus+ Project TinWise.

Tinnitus is a common auditory symptom - sound perceived without an external source. Chronic tinnitus affects about 65 million adults in the EU, often impairing quality of life through distress, sleep problems, anxiety, and depression. Yet, management remains inconsistent across Europe due to patient heterogeneity and lack of standardised care. Health literacy is increasingly recognised as key to empowering patients in self-management and reducing burden. The Erasmus+ project TinWise addresses this by creating a gamified health literacy platform for tinnitus patients and educating healthcare pr
