Lifestyle assessment. A tool for practice.

Examining a patient's lifestyle becomes imperative in a health-promotion and disease-prevention practice. A recently developed, practical lifestyle assessment tool is the Health Risk Appraisal (HRA), which examines the strengths and weaknesses of a patient's health behaviors. An HRA identifies detrimental health practices that predispose a patient to onset of illness. HRA instruments estimate the odds that a person with a given set of characteristics will become ill or die from selected diseases during a specified period of time. The HRA consists of three components: (1) an intake instrument;

Characterizing U.S. community well-being indices: a methodological synthesis and measurement systems perspective.

BACKGROUND: The proliferation of community well-being indices (CWBI) reflects growing recognition that both individual experiences and place-based conditions shape population health and quality of life. These indices are increasingly used to inform public health policy, community planning, and population health monitoring. However, there is substantial variation across indices in how community well-being is conceptualized, measured, and reported. Despite their expanding use, few studies have systematically compared these indices as integrated measurement systems. This study aimed to characteri

Quality of life in dementia: a systematically conducted narrative review of dementia-specific measurement scales.

OBJECTIVES: Ascertaining the quality of life (QoL) in people with dementia is important for evaluating service outcomes and cost-effectiveness. This paper identifies QoL measures for people with dementia and assesses their properties. METHOD: A systematic narrative review identified articles using dementia QoL measures. Electronic databases searched were AMED, CINAHL, EMBASE, Index to Theses, IBSS, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, and Web of Science. All available years and languages (if with an English language abstract) were included. RESULTS: Searches yielded 6806 citations; 304

Development of a new activity score for the evaluation of ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Tegner and Lysholm described their generally acknowledged activity score in 1985. It was originally tested for knee ligament injuries, but for the past 17 years it has been used for other joint evaluations as well. The development of already existing and new kinds of sports, differences between knee and ankle loading, and different injury rates provided reasons for developing an ankle-specific activity score. HYPOTHESIS: The new score should have a higher reliability, validity, and sensitivity than the Tegner score when evaluating ankle-related activity changes. STUDY DESIGN: Met

Cost and effectiveness issues in care of injured patients.

Injury remains the leading public health problem in the United States in terms of cost and years of life lost. It is the number 1 cause of death and disability from birth to 44 years old, which is the most economically productive segment of our population. In the current environment of rapid-pace health care system reform at the state and national levels, trauma care systems have evolved at the forefront; regionalization, continuous quality improvement systems, designation/accreditation systems, registry databases, and cost-effectiveness evaluations are being implemented in many states. An empirical study on the index system of rational drug use in children with primary nephrotic syndrome: A cross-sectional study.

In the study's early stage, the research group had established an evaluation index system for the rational drug use of primary nephrotic syndrome in children. To assess the feasibility of the established index system, we conducted this empirical study. The cross-sectional study was conducted by using the Hospital Information System to extract some general clinical data of hospitalized children with primary nephrotic syndrome, which included registration number, age, sex, diagnosis and medication, etc. Utilize the SPSS23.0 software and Excel 2016 to descriptively analyze information.224 hospital

A comparative cross-cultural health survey in the Alpe-Adria region of Central Europe.

OBJECTIVES: To develop cross-culturally applicable health indicators. METHODS: An interview survey was conducted in 4 communities of Austria, Italy and Slovenia, targeting a total sample of 800 subjects aged 18 to 70 years. 19 health indicators were assessed: among them self-reported ill-health, health behaviour, personal and social resources. Descriptive statistics were used for the comparison of the communities and multiple logistic regression to analyse correlating factors to the self-reported state of health in the different communities. RESULTS: The study results demonstrate that the di

Burden and health state utility values of eating disorders: results from a population-based survey.

BACKGROUND: There are no published estimates of the health state utility values (HSUVs) for a broad range of eating disorders (EDs). HSUVs are used in economic evaluations to determine quality-adjusted life years or as a measure of disorder burden. The main objective of the current study is to present HSUVs for a broad range of EDs based on DSM-5 diagnoses. METHODS: We used pooled data of two Health Omnibus Surveys (2015 and 2016) including representative samples of individuals aged 15 + years living in South Australia. HSUVs were derived from the SF-6D (based on the SF-12 health-related qual

Women's Initiation of Physical Violence Against an Abusive Partner Outside of a Violent Episode.

This article explores women's use of physical violence against an abusive male partner, outside of the context of a violence episode. Data were drawn from the New Zealand Violence Against Women Study, a cross-sectional household survey conducted using a population-based cluster-sampling scheme. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with women initiating physical violence against their male partners. Of the 845 women who had experienced physical violence perpetrated by their intimate partner, 19% reported physically mistreating their partner at least once outside

Evaluation of Aging and Health Status in Real Time Based on Routine Urinalysis Using an Automated Urine Analyzer.

BACKGROUND: To develop a quantitative system to enable straightforward objective assessment of health status in real time. METHODS: On the basis of routine urinalysis with an automated urine analyzer, we obtained the urinalysis ill-health index (UIHI), which was the sum of urinary protein, pH, specific gravity, and color. Clinical laboratory parameters including stress indicators (neutrophilic leukocytes and glucose) and over-nutrition indicators (triglycerides, cholesterol, and uric acid) were monitored. The electrocardiography and blood pressure were also examined. A total of 1128 subjects

Bidirectional associations between adiposity and mental health: a prospective cohort study of the UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the bidirectional associations between indicators of adiposity and mental health. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from 60,319 UK Biobank participants, we explored the bidirectional associations between mental health (including neuroticism, recent depressive symptoms, probable depression status, stress, mania, life satisfaction, and happiness) and adiposity indicators (including BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and different obesity types). RESULTS: The multivariate logistic regressions and mixed-effects models revealed the following: 1) B

There are only minor changes in quality of life in patients with Scheuermann's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of Scheuermannss disease (SD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is unclear. The aim of this study was to study HRQoL based on The Medical Outcome Study Short Form-12 (SF-12) in adult life in a group of SD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 46,418 twins were sent a questionnaire. 75.3% answered. Included in the questionnaire were questions from the SF-12. We compared SF-12 values in SD patients and control patients. We also identified 259 "non-concordant" twin pairs and compared SF-12 values from the SD twin with values from the healthy twin. RESULTS:

Comparison of cervical disc arthroplasty with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

The clinical outcome of cervical disc arthroplasty for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is still controversial. The authors retrospectively compared the intermediate term clinical outcome of cervical disc arthroplasty and traditional anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Seventy-six cases of single-level CSM with a minimum follow-up of two years were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty-seven patients underwent single-level cervical disc arthroplasty (Bryan disc: 12 cases; Prestige LP disc: 25 cases), while the other 39 patients underwent single-level ACDF. Significant improvement i

Pain Catastrophizing Scale for Francophone Adolescents: a preliminary validation.

BACKGROUND: In adults, it is well known that high levels of pain catastrophizing are related to increased pain and disability as well as to heightened anxiety and depression. However, due to the lack of a measure of pain catastrophizing adapted for francophone adolescents, little is known about the role of catastrophizing in this population. OBJECTIVES: To adapt the French version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and to examine the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the PCS for Francophone Adolescents (PCS-Ado). METHODS: The French version of the PCS was modified by a

A multidimensional health assessment questionnaire (MDHAQ) for all patients with rheumatic diseases to complete at all visits in standard clinical care.

Rheumatic diseases differ from many chronic diseases in that no single measure provides a gold standard for diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and documentation of changes over long periods. Therefore, pooled indices of several measures have been developed, such as the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Core Data Set and disease activity score (DAS) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index (SLEDAI), Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI), and others. Quantitative clinical rheumatology measures and indices are used primarily in c

Comorbidity indices in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a new report card.

Comorbid conditions have not been studied systematically for impact upon patient outcome in the setting of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Patients formerly excluded from myeloablative transplant due to comorbid illnesses now receive reduced-intensity conditioning regimens; hence, the incidence of comorbid conditions in HSCT recipients is expected to increase. Comorbid grading systems developed without regard for oncology patients have been applied in retrospective fashion to HSCT patients. Two commonly used scales (Charlson Comorbidity Index and the Adult Comorbidity Inventory

Practical assessment of vision in the elderly.

In this article we have demonstrated the significant visual impairments in elders with good vision by standard measures when the viewing conditions are less than ideal--low contrast, low or changing light level, or glare. Much of this impairment can be accounted for by the known age-related changes in the eye. We have emphasized that two people of the same age with the same standard acuity can have dramatically different vision under these nonideal conditions. Because one cannot predict vision under these conditions on the basis of standard acuity, it is important to use these additional measu
