Mental health professionals' experiences transitioning patients with anorexia nervosa from child/adolescent to adult mental health services: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The transition period between child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and adult mental health services (AMHS) has been identified as an especially critical time for patients with anorexia nervosa. In the present study, to better facilitate patients' recovery process, we explored the experiences of professionals concerning the transition from CAMHS to AMHS. METHOD: A qualitative explorative study was carried out based on recorded interviews from one multi-step focus group and two individual interviews with eight experienced health care professionals. Together they had e

Priorities and opportunities for clean energy transitions to advance health in low-income and middle-income countries.

Energy supports health and economic prosperity, yet low-income and socially or politically marginalised populations consume the least energy and depend on the most polluting fuels (ie, biomass). Despite decades of efforts to replace biomass, which is more damaging to health and the climate than cleaner alternatives (ie, gas and electricity), hundreds of millions of people remain without the benefits of clean and modern energy. We outline four priority areas for transitions to clean energy in low-income and middle-income countries: (1) rapidly reduce use of polluting fuels; (2) leverage clean e

Medical Respite as a Transitional Care Intervention to Improve Health and Housing Outcomes for Women Experiencing Homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness have high medical complexity and are at increased risk for poor post-acute outcomes after hospital discharge, yet evidence on medical respite programs for women is limited. We conducted a retrospective evaluation of a 10-bed medical respite program serving women experiencing homelessness in Northeast Ohio. Records of all women referred between March 2022 and May 2024 were reviewed to assess program implementation and resident outcomes, including health care utilization, health and health management improvement, and housing transitions at discharge. Among 226 re

The impact of a patient navigator on readiness assessment scores in youth transitioning to adult health care in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: At ages 16-21, youth with chronic medical conditions transition from pediatric to adult specialty care and often feel unprepared. Transition readiness assessments, including the validated Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ), may guide preparation; however, longitudinal evaluation is needed to determine their utility in supporting successful transitions. OBJECTIVE: (1) To compare changes in TRAQ scores between baseline, 12, and 24 months among individuals enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT); and (2) to highlight insights from youth with lived expertise

Redefining Kidney Care: A Health System's Transitional Journey from Outsourced to In-House Hemodialysis Services.

The pilot transition from outsourced to in-house hemodialy sis (HD) services at a 274-bed acute care hospital resulted in significant cost savings, operational improvements, and enhanced patient care. By adopting an advanced in-house HD model, the pilot hospital reduced per-treatment costs by 89.2%, eliminated outsourced vendor-imposed penalties, and achieved a 0% turnover rate among nephrology nurses. A structured, multidisciplinary strategy streamlined workflows and improved staff engagement. The pilot's success catalyzed system-wide expansion over four years across eight hospitals, demonstr

Mind the gap: parental perspectives on mental health service transitions for young adults with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) is known to be difficult. For young persons (YP) with anorexia nervosa (AN) transitioning between services might be particularly challenging due to the timing, often coinciding with other key life changes. The potential consequences of inadequate transition are many: treatment dropout, heightened symptom load, and increased distress amongst patients and relatives. Furthermore, the parent-child relationship may be affected by the changes related to service transition. Par

Online Social Anxiety in the Digital Age: Transitions, Predictors, and Mental Health Associations in Emerging Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Online social anxiety (OSA), a multidimensional form of social evaluative anxiety in online social contexts, disproportionately affects emerging adults who constitute the largest active group of media users and face heightened psychological sensitivity due to growing pressures and immature sociocognitive regulation during the transition to adulthood. However, its heterogeneity, transitions, and longitudinal associations with mental health outcomes remain underexplored. METHODS: This study utilized data from two waves of a three-wave longitudinal survey, with 849 Chinese participan

Transitions between skilled home health and hospice for persons living with dementia: a systematic review of literature.

BACKGROUND: In the United States (US), nearly one third of skilled home health (HH) patients and nearly one half of hospice patients have diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), conditions often characterized by a slow decline in cognition and function. Many persons living with dementia (PLWDs) are cared for at home yet may transition between care settings such as skilled HH or hospice, potentially leading to fragmented and poorer care. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine literature pertaining to (I) care transitions for PLWD who are enrolled in skilled

Socio-economic and food system drivers of nutrition and health transitions in The Gambia from 1990 to 2017.

In common with many nations undergoing a nutrition transition, micronutrient deficiencies, undernutrition and overnutrition coexist in The Gambia. Addressing these challenges simultaneously would require transformational changes in the country's food system. However, the evidence base that would enable informed decision-making in the Gambian food system has been scant, despite several sources of routinely-collected data being available. This descriptive study brings together data from four open-access global databases on food supply, political, economic, and demographic variables, and nutritio

Scenario-Based Evaluation of Team Health Information Technology to Support Pediatric Trauma Care Transitions.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians need health information technology (IT) that better supports their work. Currently, most health IT is designed to support individuals; however, more and more often, clinicians work in cross-functional teams. Trauma is one of the leading preventable causes of children's death. Trauma care by its very nature is team based but due to the emergent nature of trauma, critical clinical information is often missed in the transition of these patients from one service or unit to another. Teamwork transition technology can help support these transitions and minimize information los

Sexual orientation of trans adults is not linked to outcome of transition-related health care, but worth asking.

Since the beginning of contemporary transition-related care at the outset of the 20th century, sexual orientation has ben considered to be closely connected with gender identity and the developmental trajectories of trans people. Specifically, health professionals have regarded the anticipated post-transitional heterosexual behaviour of trans adults as predictive of a good outcome of cross-sex hormones and gender-confirming surgeries. This article reviews the current literature according to the question of whether the sexual orientation of trans people is linked to outcome measures following t

Osteological and dental markers of health in the transition from the Late Antique to the Early Medieval period in Croatia.

The purpose of this study is to analyze health at the transition from the Late Antique (LA) to the Early Medieval (EM) period in Croatia. Results of the analyses of skeletal remains are compared with historical and archaeological data to test the hypothesis that the transition was catastrophic. An additional objective is to determine whether the transition was a uniform process, or differentially affected the past inhabitants of Croatia because of various local considerations. To accomplish this, four markers of health: cribra orbitalia, linear enamel hypoplasia, nonspecific periostitis, and t

A secure web-based approach for accessing transitional health information for people with traumatic brain injury.

A web-based transitional health record was created to provide regional healthcare professionals with ubiquitous access to information on people with brain injuries as they move through the healthcare system. Participants included public, private, and community healthcare organizations/providers in Eastern Ontario (Canada). One hundred and nineteen service providers and 39 brain injury survivors registered over 6 months. Fifty-eight percent received English and 42% received bilingual services (English-French). Public health providers contacted the regional service coordinator more than private

Dentition Status and Denture Use in Relation to Later-Life Health Transitions in Older Chinese Adults.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: We examined whether baseline dentition status was associated with transitions to activities of daily living (ADL) disability, dementia, both ADL disability and dementia, and death in older Chinese adults, and whether denture use further distinguished risk within low-dentition groups. METHODS: We analysed Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey data from 2008 to 2018. Participants were aged 65 years or older, had baseline natural tooth count data, and had no observed ADL disability or reported dementia at baseline. Dentition status was classified as at least 20 tee

Seven-year data trends in mental health of refugees in transit: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of refugees in transit-an inherently unstable and high-risk context-remains underresearched in the field of refugee research. This study aimed to address this gap by providing insights into the mental health of refugees in transit, identifying vulnerable subgroups, and documenting mental health trends over a seven-year period. METHODS: Seven annually repeated cross-sectional studies with comparable methodologies were conducted, with data collected from 2017 to 2023. Official population data were used to weight the sample for each year by gender, age, and geograph

Child health implications of transitioning from charcoal to electric cooking in Uganda: a qualitative stakeholder study.

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution and cooking-related injuries from charcoal use remain major contributors to preventable child morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, including Uganda. Electric cooking (e-cooking) could reduce children's exposure to these risks, yet adoption remains limited and the policy conditions shaping this transition are poorly understood from a child health perspective. OBJECTIVE: To explore policy stakeholder perspectives on transitioning from charcoal to e-cooking in Uganda and to examine perceived implications for child health related to hous

Transitions from child to adult mental health care: the evidence-base for ESCAP guidance for clinicians.

The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) presents significant challenges, underscoring the need for improved transitional care procedures. Few European countries have implemented national transition-related guidance, despite the potential of clinical guidance to support appropriate care decisions and practices. We conducted a literature review to inform the development of the European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) transition guidance for clinicians. Following systematic principles, four databases (Medlin

Risk of Coronary Artery Disease Associated With Transitions in Metabolic Health in a Clinical Cohort of 69 272.

BACKGROUND: The effect of recent onset metabolic dysfunction on coronary artery disease (CAD) risk is poorly understood. We developed a large data set linking metabolic phenotypes and clinical outcomes to quantify CAD risks associated with adverse metabolic transition. METHODS: Clinical parameters, measures of metabolic dysfunction components (diabetes, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, and low high-density lipoprotein) and incident CAD were curated in a clinical cohort from a single quaternary medical center. Impact of young adult life transitions on adult mental health problems: a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems commonly persist from childhood to adulthood. This study tested whether young adult life transitions can improve adult mental health symptoms after adjusting for childhood mental health symptoms. METHODS: The analysis uses data from the prospective, representative Great Smoky Mountains Study. Life transitions (e.g., high school completion, partnering, parenthood, and living independently) were assessed up to three times in young adulthood (ages 18 to 26; 3,241 observations). A cumulative variable counted the number of young adult transitions. Emotional, subs
