Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people in the United States experience a disproportionate burden of asthma and atopic dermatitis. The study of these disease disparities has focused on proximal socioenvironmental exposures and on the biomechanistic (including genetic) differences between racial and ethnic groups. Although biomedical research in allergy and immunology stands to benefit from the inclusion of diverse study populations, the narrow focus on biologic mechanisms disregards the complexity of interactions across biologic and structural factors, including the effects of structural racism.

PURPOSE: Social care-health care that aims to understand and address patients' social needs-is increasingly recognized as a strategy for reducing disparities. However, social care literature is characterized by numerous conflicts. Paradox, the coexistence of seemingly contradictory yet simultaneously true positions, can serve as a useful lens for examining these tensions. This study aimed to identify key paradoxes in the social care literature to illuminate the resources, mindset, and approaches required for effective social care.
METHODS: A sub-analysis was conducted of a systematic review o

Difficult encounters between patients and clinicians impact all areas of medical care, yet how to manage them is not routinely taught in medical training. This paper presents a case of a patient with cancer who struggled with emotional outbursts and impulsive behaviors. In the context of the racial trauma and socioeconomic challenges that the patient also experienced, the team struggled with boundary setting. We will review both traditional and contemporary approaches to the management of difficult clinician-patient interactions, while also addressing some of the limitations of existing framew

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) poses challenges for timely diagnosis due to its protean early manifestations and lack of definitive tests. This article explores how patient navigation interventions can expedite diagnosis, particularly for underserved patients who face disproportionately longer delays. Patient navigation has proven effective in reducing disparities in various diseases by providing guidance and support to patients and caregivers. It enhances awareness, facilitates communication with health care providers, and streamlines diagnosis. Drawing from literature on patient navigat

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a leading cause of neurological disability among older adults, with an age-standardized global prevalence in 2021 of 139/100,000 and projected to increase by 112% by 2050. People living with PD experience seven times worse health status than the general population. Access to diagnosis, care, and support is particularly challenged by intersecting social and healthcare system complexities. This Critical Interpretive Synthesis aimed to identify mechanisms through which barriers interact to create inequitable access to PD care among underserved populations.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a highly stigmatized, debilitating condition affecting millions in the U.S., with stigma posing a major barrier to treatment engagement, retention, and outcomes. Disparities in OUD and opioid-involved overdoses disproportionately impact marginalized communities, underscoring the urgent need for culturally-informed stigma reduction interventions that address intersecting forms of discrimination and health inequities. This review examined interventions targeting OUD-related stigma, focusing on the diversity and cultural relevance of these initiatives.

Skin diseases vary significantly across racial and ethnic groups, influenced by genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. However, patients with skin of color (SOC) have historically been underrepresented in research, resulting in disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and access to care. In the April issue of the Journal, we dedicate attention to these key disparities. We focus on the differences in clinical symptoms and treatment challenges related to inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa in SOC patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on cancer health equity, specifically investigating whether AI is addressing or widening disparities in cancer outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies demonstrate significant advancements in AI, such as deep learning for cancer diagnosis and predictive analytics for personalized treatment, showing potential for improved precision in care. However, concerns persist about the performance of AI tools across diverse populations due to biased training data. Access to AI technologies also remains limited, p

INTRODUCTION: Eating and swallowing difficulties are prevalent and distressing among persons living with dementia (PLWD). These challenges may be especially burdensome for PLWD in lower-resourced settings, where environmental factors such as social support, health-care infrastructure, and food access are critical for meeting quality standards of eating and swallowing care. However, clinical practices and research methods have not sufficiently focused on the lived environment to promote high-quality, socially and culturally aligned management approaches.
METHODS: To address this gap, we develo

Implicit racial bias is pernicious and pervasive, forming as early as infancy,1 and across political, economic, religious, and cultural divides. When it shapes behavior, it leaves a path of social, physical, and psychological harm in its wake. In this issue of the Journal, Malison and colleagues2 map the presence of implicit racial biases among psychiatrists and psychiatric trainees. This work is especially important as increasing rates of mental health problems among American children and adolescents reach crisis-level proportions.3 Youth of color are both more likely to experience mental hea

BACKGROUND: Although penile cancer is a rare malignancy in developed nations, racial and socioeconomic differences exist in the incidence of the disease and its associated survival-related outcomes.
METHODS: A search of the literature was performed for research published between the years 1990 and 2015. Case reports and non-English-language articles were excluded, instead focusing specifically on large, population-based studies.
RESULTS: The incidence of penile cancer is higher in Hispanic and African American men compared with whites and Asians. Men with penile cancer also appear to have a

This article conceptualizes disparities in thoracic surgery outcomes as modifiable quality improvement failures that undermine reliability, timeliness, and effectiveness across the care continuum. It links inequities to upstream determinants, including differential tobacco exposure, environmental and occupational carcinogens, health literacy, and structural racism, which together influence risk and access to guideline-concordant care. The authors describe process failures in detection and referral-particularly low uptake of low-dose computed tomographic screening and delayed specialty consulta

Disparities in spasticity care contribute to preventable morbidity and unequal rehabilitation outcomes. Structural inequities in health care access, underrepresentation in clinical trials, and limited awareness of spasticity in underserved populations hinder timely intervention. This article explores systemic gaps in spasticity management and outlines strategies to promote equitable care delivery and improve long-term patient outcomes across all populations.

The Society of Surgical Oncology and its membership are committed to reducing and eliminating cancer disparities. Over the past several decades, plentiful research has identified marginalized populations who are at an elevated risk of developing cancer, are less likely to receive recommended cancer screenings and guideline-concordant care, and populations who have inferior oncologic outcomes after cancer treatment. Despite monumental strides in improving cancer outcomes, cancer disparities unfortunately remain a reality. Continued strategic efforts are needed to identify the root causes of the

PURPOSE: New technologies are continuously emerging in radiation oncology. Inherent technological limitations can result in health care disparities in vulnerable patient populations. These limitations must be considered for existing and new technologies in the clinic to provide equitable care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a health disparity risk assessment metric inspired by failure mode and effects analysis. We provide sample patient populations and their potential associated disparities, guidelines for clinics and vendors, and example applications of the methodology.
RESULTS: A dispar
