BACKGROUND: Although there is a well-known association between fetal bradycardia and maternal eclampsia, the characteristics of fetal heart rate tracings after an eclamptic seizure have not previously been thoroughly described. Fetal heart rate changes are thought to be related to maternal lactic acidemia caused by vasospasm and uterine hyperactivity leading to placental hypoperfusion and fetal hypoxia. The decision to intervene in the case of an abnormal fetal heart rate tracing after an eclamptic seizure is often difficult; however, maternal resuscitation should be the primary focus.

PURPOSE: Persons with Huntington's disease (HD) have a high incidence of falls. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction has been reported even in early stages of this disease. To date, there has been no analysis of the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and falls in this patient population. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate the relationship between HRV and falls in persons with HD.
METHODS: Huntington's disease patients enrolled in a prospective study on fear of falling and falls were assessed using short-term HRV analyses and blood pressure measures in both the r

Ivabradine inhibits hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channels in the sinus node, thereby reducing heart rate, and heart rate reduction improves regional myocardial blood flow and contractile function in ischemic myocardium. Accordingly, ivabradine reduces anginal symptoms in patients with stable coronary artery disease but does not improve their clinical outcome. Heart rate reduction with ivabradine in patients with symptomatic heart failure reduces symptoms, attenuates remodeling, and improves clinical outcome. In pigs and mice, ivabradine reduces infarct size from myocardi

Depression occurs in people of all ages across all world regions; it is the second leading cause of disability and its global burden increased by 37.5% between 1990 and 2010. Autonomic changes are often found in altered mood states and appear to be a central biological substrate linking depression to a number of physical dysfunctions. Alterations of autonomic nervous system functioning that promotes vagal withdrawal are reflected in reductions of heart rate variability (HRV) indexes. Reduced HRV characterizes emotional dysregulation, decreased psychological flexibility and defective social eng

The goal of the study was assessment of the hour-long training involving handling virtual environment (sVR) and watching a stereoscopic 3D movie on the mechanisms of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation among the subjects who were not predisposed to motion sickness. In order to exclude predispositions to motion sickness, all the participants (n=19) underwent a Coriolis test. During an exposure to 3D and sVR the ECG signal was continuously recorded using the Holter method. For the twelve consecutive 5-min epochs of ECG signal, the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in time and frequency d

OBJECTIVE: This study used quantitative analysis to determine whether increased variability in fetal heart rate (FHR) is related to the risk of developing periventricular leukomalacia (PVL).
METHODS: We analyzed 124 FHR traces of neonates delivered preterm at 27-33 weeks' gestation to 105 mothers. FHR traces 1-3h before delivery were translated into power-spectrum curves using a fast Fourier transformation. The total power (the area under the curve of 1-10 cycles per minute), segmental power of every cycle per minute, peak power, and frequency edges were calculated, and their relationship wit

Cardiovascular diseases is one of the key causes of lethality in developed countries. Coronary heart disease and arterial hypertension make significant contribution to this lethality. The above two diseases are often accompanied with compensatory acceleration of the heart rate (HR). At the same time long-term tachycardia is an independent risk factor of complications resultant from high consumption of oxygen, disturbed energy metabolism in cardiomyocytes, regress of heart contractility, development of cardiac failure. Heart contraction rhythm depends on electric activity of the sinus node cell

BACKGROUND: Fetal long QT syndrome (LQTS) is associated with complex arrhythmias including torsades de pointes and 2° atrioventricular block. Sinus bradycardia has also been associated with fetal LQTS, but little is known of this rhythm manifestation. Our purpose was to characterize the fetal heart rate (FHR)/gestational age (GA) profile of fetal LQTS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We ascertained fetal LQTS subjects by family history (Group 1) or fetal arrhythmia referral (Group 2). We compared FHR in LQTS subjects versus normal fetuses. To identify FHR predictors of LQTS, we calculated a bradycardia

BACKGROUND: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is associated with an increased incidence of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Heart rate turbulence (HRT) parameters were applied during withdrawal to estimate cardiac regulation during treatment with clomethiazole.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome were included in the study. Heart rate regulation was obtained by means of Holter ECG analyzing time intervals before medication, and 2 and 6h after medication. Slope and onset of HRT were calculated in addition to heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Fu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To analyse the reasons why foetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring failed to fulfil the initial expectations of unequivocally decreasing perinatal morbidity and mortality, and to summarize the most recent advances in this field.
RECENT FINDINGS: It is now clear that expectations towards FHR monitoring at the time of its introduction into clinical practice were unrealistic. Several pitfalls in FHR monitoring have been identified, and solutions established to avoid them. Correct use of FHR equipment and adequate tracing recording are as important as analysis and interpretation. Ne

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a noninvasive, practical and reproducible measure of autonomic nervous system function. A heart rate that is variable and responsive to demands is believed to bestow a survival advantage, whereas reduced HRV may be associated with poorer cardiovascular health and outcomes. In recent years, many researchers have investigated the prognostic implications of HRV in a variety of clinical populations. Evidence suggests that reduced HRV has prognostic significance for individuals with myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure, unstable angina and diabetes mellitus.

Aiming to detect the stage of gestation where dynamical changes of the RR fluctuations may occur, we assessed short-term fluctuations of low risk pregnant women. Ninety six, 10min ECG recordings were collected along gestation (7 to 39 weeks). Corresponding RR fluctuations series were analysed to obtain the RMSSD, α(1), α(1(mag)) and α(1(sign)) parameters. Four groups covering first, second and last trimesters of gestation were conformed. No significant changes in α(1), which was close to unit, and α(1(sign)) among gestational groups were identified. But, in accordance with previous findings, w

BACKGROUND: Infants born to cocaine-using mothers have a 3- to 8-fold increase in sudden infant death syndrome. Its underlying cause, in part, may be attributed to abnormal autonomic function. We proposed to study heart rate variability, reflecting autonomic control of the heart, in cocaine-exposed infants.
METHODS: From 1997 to 2000, we studied 217 asymptomatic, term infants, of whom 68 had intrauterine cocaine exposure (group I). Their data were compared with infants exposed to drugs other than cocaine (group II, n = 77) and no drugs (group III, n = 72). Twenty-four-hour heart rate variabil

Heart rate variability (HRV) gives information about sympathetic parasympathetic autonomic balance. Our purpose was to determine whether HRV is abnormal in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. In 16 patients with Sjögren's syndrome and 30 matched controls, a short time analysis of HRV was performed for both the frequency and the time domain. In the time domain, patients tended to display a slower heart rate, greater R-R variability and higher standard deviation of the mean (SDNN) than did healthy subjects, but the differences were not statistically significant. In the frequency domain the spectra

Indices of heart rate variability (HRV) provide a window onto autonomic modulation of the heart. HRV indices, determined in either the time or frequency domain, are closely related and reflect parasympathetic, mixed sympathetic, and parasympathetic and circadian rhythms. In population studies, decreased HRV has had predictive value for mortality among healthy adults. It is a well-established risk factor for arrhythmic events and mortality among post-myocardial-infarction patients but has only moderate sensitivity and specificity. Decreased HRV has had mixed predictive success in congestive hea

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Traditional spectral and nonspectral methods have shown that heart rate (HR) variability is reduced after stroke. Some patients with poor outcome, however, show randomlike, complex patterns of HR behavior that traditional analysis techniques are unable to quantify. Therefore, we designed the present study to evaluate the complexity and correlation properties of HR dynamics after stroke by using new analysis methods based on nonlinear dynamics and fractals ("chaos theory").
METHODS: In addition to the traditional spectral components of HR variability, we measured instan
