[Acetylsalicylic acid as an augmentation factor in food allergy].

A 39-year-old female patient presented with an intense allergic reaction and shock after ingesting sunflower seeds and simultaneously acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Skin tests and CAP specific. IgE demonstrated an IgE-mediated sensibilization to sunflower seeds. When sunflower seeds were eaten alone, only discrete paresthesia of the oral mucosa occurred. Surprisingly, an oral challenge with ASA was well tolerated. The supplementary contribution of ASA to the allergic reaction was dose-dependent. The quantity of the allergen also modified the intensity of the symptoms. This surprising effect of AS

First Report of White Rust Caused by Albugo tragopogonis on Sunflower in Belgium.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is widely used for cut flowers and decoration in Belgium. A serious outbreak of what was suspected to be white rust on sunflower was observed in an East Flemish nursery near the city of Ghent in August 2004. This disease has previously been reported in Europe (southwest of France) (1) and other parts of the world with losses as much as 70 to 80% (Australia, North and South America, and Africa) (2,3). In the Flemish nursery, only single diseased plants (cv. Sunrich) were found. Blister-like pustules containing sporangia were observed on infected leaves. Initially t

Cyanide-induced death of cells in plant leaves.

Destruction of guard cell nuclei in epidermis isolated from leaves of pea, maize, sunflower, and haricot bean, as well as destruction of cell nuclei in leaves of the aquatic plants waterweed and eelgrass were induced by cyanide. Destruction of nuclei was strengthened by illumination, prevented by the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol and an electron acceptor N,N,N ,N -tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine, and removed by quinacrine. Photosynthetic O2 evolution by the leaf slices of a C3 plant (pea), or a C4 plant (maize) was inhibited by CN- inactivating ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, and was rene

The Effects of Cadmium Toxicity.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic non-essential transition metal that poses a health risk for both humans and animals. It is naturally occurring in the environment as a pollutant that is derived from agricultural and industrial sources. Exposure to cadmium primarily occurs through the ingestion of contaminated food and water and, to a significant extent, through inhalation and cigarette smoking. Cadmium accumulates in plants and animals with a long half-life of about 25-30 years. Epidemiological data suggest that occupational and environmental cadmium exposure may be related to various types of cancer,

Behavioural and physiological responses of limpet prey to a seastar predator and their transmission to basal trophic levels.

Besides the well-documented behavioural changes induced by predators on prey, predator-induced stress can also include a suite of biochemical, neurological and metabolic changes that may represent important energetic costs and have long-lasting effects on individuals and on the demography of prey populations. The rapid transmission of prey behavioural changes to lower trophic levels, usually associated with alteration of feeding rates, can substantially change and even reverse direction over the long term as prey cope with the energetic costs associated with predation-induced stress. It is the

Organic solvents and oils as vehicles for triclosan in mouthrinses: a clinical study.

Previous experiments have shown that the nature of the detergents used in aqueous triclosan-containing mouthrinses affects the plaque-inhibiting effect of these mouthrinses, probably because of the properties of the micelles formed. It has also been shown that triclosan has a marked plaque-inhibiting effect when dissolved in pure propylene glycol. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical effect of triclosan dissolved in oils and in the pure solvents glycerol (GLY) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). A test panel of 12 volunteers rinsed with the allocated mouthrinses for 4 days in a

Sensitization Potency of Sunflower Seed Protein in a Mouse Model: Identification of 2S-Albumins More Allergenic Than SFA-8.

SCOPE: Food allergy to sunflower seed (SFS) protein is not frequent and only non-specific lipid transfert protein (nsLTP) Hel a 3 is officially recognized as a food allergen. Out of the eleven seed storage 2S-albumins (SESA) detected in SFS, only SFA-8 allergenicity has been investigated so far. The study aimed then to evaluate SFS protein allergenicity and particularly, to compare the sensitization potency of SESA in a mouse model. METHODS AND RESULTS: The most abundant SESA and nsLTP were isolated from SFS through a combination of chromatographic methods. Purified proteins were then used to

[Stimulation of regenerative processes and correction of the functional activity of the liver in its partial resection and toxic lesions].

The effects of hepatotropic growth factors (HGFs) and phospholipid drugs on the recovery of functions and the regeneration of the rat liver were studied in CC14-induced toxic damage and after partial hepatectomy (PHE). HGFs isolated from the cytoplasmic cells of the regenerating liver, as well as from the liver of the animals given prodigiozan and from the media taken after culturing the explants of the regenerating liver were found to stimulate DNA synthesis and hepatocytic proliferation following PHE and in the cirrhotic liver. Prodigiozan was shown to induce the formation of HGFs not only i

Phytase supplementation effects on amino acid digestibility depend on the protein source in the diet but are not related to InsP6 degradation in broiler chickens.

The objective was to determine phytase effects on prececal amino acid (AA) digestibility and phytate (InsP6) breakdown when different oilseed meals were used in broiler chicken diets. The study included 14 diets: a corn-soybean meal (SBM) basal diet and 6 diets that contained SBM, rapeseed meal (RSM), and sunflower meal (SFM) with 2 inclusion levels at the expense of corn starch (150 and 300 g/kg SBM or SFM, or 100 and 200 g/kg RSM). Each diet was mixed with or without a phytase supplement of 1,500 FTU/kg. Diets were provided to broilers for 5 D. Digesta from the posterior half of the ileum we

First report of fatty acids in Mimosadiplotricha bee pollen with in vitro lipase inhibitory activity.

Bee pollen (BP) is full of nutrients and phytochemicals, and so it is widely used as a health food and alternative medicine. Its composition and bioactivity mainly depend on the floral pollens. In this work, BP collected by Apis mellifera with different monoculture flowering crops (BP1-6) were used. The types of floral pollen in each BP were initially identified by morphology, and subsequently confirmed using molecular phylogenetic analysis. Data from both approaches were consistent and revealed each BP to be monofloral and derived from the flowers of Camellia sinensis L., Helianthus annuus L.

Non-Specific Lipid Transfer Protein Amb a 6 Is a Source-Specific Important Allergenic Molecule in Ragweed Pollen.

Pollen from common ragweed is an important allergen source worldwide and especially in western and southern Romania. More than 100 million patients suffer from symptoms of respiratory allergy (e.g., rhinitis, asthma) to ragweed pollen. Among the eleven characterized allergens, Amb a 6 is a non-specific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP). nsLTPs are structurally stable proteins in pollen and food from different unrelated plants capable of inducing severe reactions. The goal of this study was to produce Amb a 6 as a recombinant and structurally folded protein (rAmb a 6) and to characterize its physi
