Effects of seed treatments and storage duration on Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and amaranth fresh leaf yield.

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a key insect pest of amaranth in East Africa. Pest management has been restricted to indiscriminate application of insecticides to foliage. Applying systemic insecticides to seeds has been shown to manage aphid infestations in other crop systems. We evaluated two commercially available seed treatments in East Africa, Apron Star (thiamethoxam 20 g/kg + metalaxyl-M 20 g/kg + difenoconazole 2 g/kg) and Menceron (imidacloprid 233 g/L + pencycuron 50 g/L + thiram 107 g/L) for their efficacy against M. persicae and impact on f

Cerambycid Pheromones Attract Predators Temnoscheila virescens (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae), Chariessa pilosa (Coleoptera: Cleridae), and Apiomerus crassipes (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

In 2011-2013, we determined the interactive effects of the cerambycid pheromones racemic syn-2,3-hexanediol, racemic 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, and racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2-one on trap catches of predators associated with bark and woodboring beetles in north Georgia and South Carolina. Temnoscheila virescens (F.) (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae) was attracted to traps baited with 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one; ethanol enhanced attraction. Traps baited with syn-2,3-hexanediol attracted Chariessa pilosa (Forster) (Coleoptera: Cleridae); attraction was interrupted by 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one. An assassin bug Apiomerus

Immature instars of three species of Rhodnius Stål, 1859 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae): morphology, morphometry, and taxonomic implications.

BACKGROUND: Among the 18 genera of the Triatominae subfamily, three stand out for their diversity and epidemiological importance: Triatoma, Panstrongylus, and Rhodnius. Rhodnius includes 21 species that can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi (the etiological agent of Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis) and Trypanosoma rangeli. The Rhodnius prolixus complex comprises seven species, including Rhodnius marabaensis, Rhodnius prolixus, and Rhodnius robustus, which occur in the northern region of Brazil. Since both adults and immatures can carry T. cruzi, in this study the five nymphal i

Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Annona spp. Derivatives on Bemisia tabaci MEAM 1 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Tomato.

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci(Gennadius) MEAM 1 is one of the main insect species that colonize tomato plants and cause direct and indirect damage. The use of botanical derivatives may be a valuable method of insect control to reduce the inappropriate use of synthetic insecticides on crops. In this study, we evaluated the bioactivity of ethanolic extracts prepared from Annonaceae species compared to that of the commercial insecticides based on acetogenins (Anosom® 1 EC, anonine 10,000 mg L-1) and thiamethoxam (Actara® 250 WG) on eggs, nymphs, and adults of the whitefly in tomato. Initially, the

RNA interference of tyrosine hydroxylase caused rapid mortality by impairing cuticle formation in Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

BACKGROUND: The application of RNA interference (RNAi) technique in controlling agricultural insect pests has been receiving much attention since the discovery of RNAi. The brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, a notorious pest of rice, has evolved a high level of resistance to many kinds of insecticides. Tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) is an indispensable survival gene in holometabolous insects, playing key roles in cuticle tanning and immunity. In this study, we investigated whether Th could be used as a potential target in controlling N. lugens. RESULTS: Here, we demonstrated that NlTh had

cDNA isolation and characterization of two vitellogenin genes in the Chagas' disease vector Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera, Reduviidae).

Two vitellogenin genes (Vg1 and Vg2) were identified in the Chagas' disease vector Triatoma infestans. The putative coding sequence corresponding to Vg2 was found to be 5553bp long, encoding 1851 amino acids in a single open reading frame. The comparative analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences from Vg1 and Vg2 cDNA fragments of T. infestans revealed 58.94% of identity with 76.43% of homology. The phylogenetic tree based on the complete Vg amino acid sequences of hemimetabolous insects unambiguously supported two clusters, one consisting of Vg sequences from dictyopteran and the other con

Remotely sensing arthropod and nutrient stressed plants: a case study with nitrogen and cotton aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Remote sensing can be used in combination with ground sampling to detect aphid- (Aphis gossypii Glover) infested cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Changes in wavelengths in the near-infrared (NIR) have proven useful for such detection, but these changes can be confused with other factors stressing plants, such as water deficiency and nutrient status. This study was designed to test the utility of this technology to distinguish between two factors stressing plants: nitrogen deficiency and aphids. Field plots were created by applying varying rates of nitrogen to cotton at different dates in the gr

Insecticide resistance monitoring of Aphis spiraecola (Hemiptera: Aphididae) to neonicotinoids and abamectin in a major apple-growing region.

Aphis spiraecola is a significant pest of fruit trees worldwide, causing substantial yield and economic losses in apple production. The control of A. spiraecola primarily depends on chemical pesticides; however, long-term field monitoring of insecticide resistance is lacking. This study assessed the susceptibility of a laboratory-susceptible strain (SS) of A. spiraecola to abamectin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid. The LC50 values of A. spiraecola to abamectin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid were 0.13, 1.44, 1.76, and 1.19 mg L-1, respectively. The resistance levels o

A degree day model for predicting voltinism of the invasive balsam woolly adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) in northern Utah.

Balsam woolly adelgid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.) (BWA), invasive in North America, was first detected on subalpine fir [Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.] in several northern Utah counties in 2017. BWA phenology is known to vary by elevation and climate; a degree-day (DD) model focused on population expansion into the Intermountain West is needed. Bark samples were collected weekly from infested subalpine fir in early summer through late fall at 5 northern Utah sites from August 2020 to December 2022. At a single site, additional samples were collected biweekly to monthly during winter and spring. T

The transcriptome of Icerya aegyptiaca (Hemiptera: Monophlebidae) and comparison with neococcoids reveal genetic clues of evolution in the scale insects.

BACKGROUND: Scale insects are worldwide sap-sucking parasites, which can be distinguished into neococcoids and non-neococcoids. Neococcoids are monophyletic with a peculiar reproductive system, paternal genome elimination (PGE). Different with neococcoids, Iceryini, a tribe in non-neococcoids including several damaging pests, has abdominal spiracles, compound eyes in males, relatively abundant wax, unique hermaphrodite system, and specific symbionts. However, the current studies on the gene resources and genomic mechanism of scale insects are mainly limited in the neococcoids, and lacked of co

Sanitizing Equipment and Personnel to Prevent the Spread of Hibiscus Mealybug [Nipaecoccus viridis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)] in Florida Citrus.

Hibiscus mealybug (Nipaecoccus viridis, Newstead) is an emerging and serious pest of citrus in Florida. Preventing the spread of hibiscus mealybug by sanitizing personnel and equipment such as individual protective covers can help limit new infestations. Two mealybug life stages, first instars (crawlers) and eggs inside ovisacs, were tested as they are the most likely to be accidentally transported on people and tools. Isopropanol sprays in 3 commercially available concentrations (50%, 70%, and 90%) were tested against crawlers and ovisacs, and steam treatments and hot water immersion were tes

Changes in the expression of four ABC transporter genes in response to imidacloprid in Bemisia tabaci Q (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a globally invasive species complex that causes serious damage to field crops, has developed resistance to imidacloprid and many other pesticides. Insect detoxify to pesticides may partially depend on ABC transporters, which contribute to the detoxification of xenobiotics. To determine whether genes in the ABCG subfamily are involved in imidacloprid detoxification in B. tabaci Q, we cloned four ABCG subfamily genes based on the published MED/Q genome and on our previous study of the transcriptional response of ABC transporters in B. tabaci Q
