OBJECTIVES: Living-donor kidney transplant from donors who are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus can be considered as a possibility to compensate for insufficiency of organ transplants, particularly in a hepatitis B virus endemic country. In this study, the safety and efficacy were reviewed retrospectively in living-donor kidney transplant from donors who were chronically infected with hepatitis B virus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the years between 2012 and 2013, we transplanted 4 renal grafts from hepatitis B surface antigen-positive living donors to antihepatitis B antibody-positiv

Disappearance of the hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) typically signals the remission of chronic hepatitis B; however, HBeAg defective variants have been identified in patients with HBeAg negative chronic hepatitis (CH). We studied the changes in the hepatitis B virus (HBV) genome associated with HBeAg clearance in four asymptomatic carriers (ASC) and in four patients with CH. Three ASC had a precore stop codon variant with the core region being wild-type or deleted. The other ASC had wild-type precore and core region. In all ASC, HBV levels were reduced markedly with two ASC converting HBV negat

OBJECTIVES: The natural history of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection does not always conform to the currently defined phases, and some patients who do not clearly meet established treatment criteria are classified as in the gray zone (GZ). We investigated the factors for progression of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative GZ patients to chronic hepatitis (CH): HBV DNA levels ≥ 3.3 log IU/mL and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ≥ 31 U/L.
METHODS: This study included 102 HBeAg-negative GZ patients (81 with high HBV DNA levels and normal ALT levels, and 21 with low HBV DNA levels and high ALT le

There is little known of immunologic factors leading to the occurrence of occult HBV infection (OBI). Specific cellular immune response to hepatitis B virus (HBV) core/pol peptides was compared between blood donor populations, including 37 OBIs, 53 chronic HBV infections (CHB), 47 resolved infections, and 56 non-infected controls, respectively. The rate of CD4+/CD8+ T cell proliferation in OBI or CHB carriers was higher than in HBV resolved and non-infected individuals (P < 0.05). The intensity of IFN-γ-secretion T-cell response of OBI carriers was highest, followed by CHB and resolved infecti

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: HBV can integrate in the host genome of the hepatocyte and recent findings suggest that integrated HBV contributes to the persistent production of viral proteins. Here, we quantified the levels of integrated HBV in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and analyzed the relation between HBV integration, virological activity (plasma HBV DNA and HBsAg levels), and clinical outcomes.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: We developed and validated a multistep Arthrobacter luteus (Alu)-PCR that specifically amplifies integrated HBV and RT-Alu-PCR detecting mRNA transcripts derived from inte

BACKGROUND: Currently approved oral antivirals for chronic HBV infection target the reverse transcriptase (RT) domain of the HBV polymerase. Emergence of drug resistance has been reported in a small proportion of chronic HBV patients on prolonged treatment with antivirals. We recently reported ZINC20451377, a small molecule targeting hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) that effectively inhibits both WT HBV and tenofovir-resistant HBV. Due to the partial overlap between the RT domain and HBsAg, drug-resistant mutants are associated with corresponding mutations in HBsAg.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is known to cause severe liver diseases such as acute or chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection is a major health problem with nearly 300 million individuals infected worldwide. Currently, nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) and interferon alpha are clinically approved treatments for HBV infection. NAs are potent antiviral agents that bind to HBV polymerase and block viral reverse transcription and replication. Besifovir dipivoxil maleate (BSV) is a newly developed NA against HBV in the form of acyclic nucleotide pho

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA in serum is a novel biomarker that reflects cccDNA activity. We investigated whether HBV RNA can predict serological response to peginterferon (PEG-IFN) treatment. Serum HBV RNA levels were retrospectively measured at weeks 0, 12, 24 and 52 of therapy and after treatment discontinuation (week 78) in 266 HBeAg-positive chronic HBV patients who had participated in a global randomized controlled trial (HBV99-01 study). Patients received 52 weeks PEG-IFN monotherapy (n = 136) or PEG-IFN and lamivudine (n = 130). The primary end point was HBeAg loss 24 weeks after PEG-IF

Nowadays, intensive immunosuppressive therapy including rituximab is commonly used prior to kidney transplantation (KT), raising concerns over hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation among hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative and anti-hepatitis B core (HBc)-positive KT recipients. Recent practice guidelines suggested watchful monitoring or antiviral prophylaxis for the first 6-12 months, the period of maximal immunosuppression. However, the actual risk for HBV reactivation, and whether short-term antiviral therapy in the early period is necessary, remains unclear. A total of 449 HBsAg-neg

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) level plays an important role in conjunction with other markers such as hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) deoxyribonucleic acid levels to predict disease activity in chronic Hepatitis B (CHB). Quantification of HBsAg is useful in differentiating carriers from active hepatitis in HBeAg negative patients, and current guidelines recommend monitoring of pegylated interferon alpha treatment in CHB infection. However, there are only few studies about the role of quantitative HBsAg (qHBsAg) monitoring in HIV-HBV coinfected patients. S

AIM: To assess the impact of hepatitis B surface (HBsAg) seroclearance on survival outcomes in hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer.
METHODS: Information from patients with hepatitis B-related liver cancer admitted in our hospital from 2008-2017 was retrieved. Cases diagnosed with HBsAg (-) and HBcAb (+) liver cancer were included in the HBsAg seroclearance (SC) group. HBsAg (+) liver cancer patients strictly matched for liver cancer stage (AJCC staging system, 8th edition), Child-Pugh score, and first diagnosis/treatment method (surgery, ablation and TACE) were assigned to the HBsAg non-

BACKGROUND Long-term real-world data are relatively sparse regarding recurrence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection after liver transplantation using hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg) and nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUC) prophylaxis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from 371 adults transplanted for HBV-related disease at 20 European centers and given HBIg for ³12 months ± NUC therapy were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS HBIg comprised Hepatect® (iv HBIgB; n=299), subcutaneous Zutectra® (sc HBIg, n=236), and other HBIg preparations (n=130); 93.5% received NUC therapy. Mean follow-up was 6.8±3.5

Chronic hepatitis B is a major global health issue, and has no known cure. Currently there are over 240 million people infected with the disease, and it leads to the death of over 686,000 people each year. A total of seven treatments which help to control the disease are currently available: interferon-based treatments (pegasys, and interferon alpha), and nucleoside and nucleotide analogs (Viread, Baraclude, Tyzeka, Hepsera, Epivir-HBV), but all require continuing treatment to maintain control of the disease. One of the definitions of a cure for hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the loss of hepatitis

The incidences of chronic hepatitis B (CHB), Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated cirrhosis and HBV-associated carcinoma are high and increasing. This study was designed to evaluate serum lipid metabolite changes that are associated with the progression from CHB to HBV-associated cirrhosis and ultimately to HBV-associated HCC. A targeted metabolomic assay was performed in fasting sera from 136 CHB patients, 104 HBV-associated cirrhosis, and 95 HBV-associated HCC using ultra-performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. A total of 140 metabolites were identified. Clear se

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis is a viral infection of the liver. It is mainly transmitted between people through contact with infected blood, frequently from mother to baby in-utero. Hepatitis B poses significant risk to the fetus and up to 85% of infants infected by their mothers at birth develop chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) is a purified solution of human immunoglobulin that could be administered to the mother, newborn, or both. HBIG offers protection against HBV infection when administered to pregnant women who test positive for hepatitis B envelope a

Impaired renal function is associated with a high risk of chronicity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Patients on hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis are at an increased risk of viral transmission due to frequent necessity of blood product transfer as well as use of contaminated dialysate or dialysis materials. Additionally, health professionals may cause viral spread via contaminated hands and carelessness against hygiene rules. The frequency of chronic HBV infection may be as high as 80% in patients on renal replacement therapies. This is because HBV vaccination is essential to eli

INTRODUCTION: In 2006, Singapore adopted the universal hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg) policy. Since then, all infants of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive mothers receive HBIg, irrespective of maternal hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status. However, the benefits of HBIg for infants of HBeAg-negative mothers are unclear. We compared the vertical transmission rates among children of HBeAg-negative mothers who were given HBIg versus a retrospective cohort who were not given HBIg, to determine its protective effect.
METHODS: This observational study involved pregnant HBsAg-positive w

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B infection, caused by hepatitis B Virus (HBV), is one of the major global public health problems. Hepatitis B Virus genotypes appear to show varying geographic distribution with possible pathogenic and therapeutic differences. Knowledge of HBV genotypes is very important for clinical treatment. Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue that is clinically used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection. However, the main problem with the application of lamivudine is the development of viral resistance to the treatment with this anti viral drug. Besides, it has been suggested that l

OBJECTIVE: To resolve discrepant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) results for pregnant women screened for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
STUDY DESIGN: A case was defined as discrepant HBsAg (reactive followed by non-reactive) result during the same pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examined a convenience sample of cases passively reported by US Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Programs. Using a standard form, available results were obtained for hepatitis B tests and vaccination histories. Results were independently reviewed by 3 viral hepatitis experts and a cli

Approximately 360 million people worldwide are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and are at high risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Chronic HBV infection is the most prevalent cause of this tumour, accounting for 55% of global cases, and 89% of those in endemic regions for HBV infection. Relative risks for developing HCC in the presence of chronic HBV infection may be as high as 49 in case-control studies, and 98 in cohort studies. HCC is the sixth most common cancer in the world today, with approximately 630,000 new cases occurring each year. It ranks third in
