Infected Lives: Lived Experiences of Young African American HIV-Positive Women.

This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of young African American HIV-infected women. Eleven women between the ages of 21 and 35 participated. One pattern, Infected Lives, and three themes--Living Alone With HIV, Living With Unresolved Conflicts, and Living With Multiple Layers of Betrayal--emerged. The pattern and themes portray the very complex and challenging experiences faced by these young women living with HIV infection. They have experienced isolation, abandonment, betrayal, and discrimination in their interpersonal and social systems. They often dealt wit

Patients' experiences of the recovery period 12 months after upper gastrointestinal surgery.

The aim of this study was to describe and explore participants' experiences of their recovery from upper gastrointestinal surgery and being recovered or not 12 months following their operations. A hermeneutic approach was used to understand participants' experiences and situations. Fifteen participants were interviewed at 12 months postoperatively. According to participants, the year that had passed was experienced as being "pale and gray." Themes that were identified included feelings of doubtfulness, others' concern, and disappointment; never feeling quite well and having to adapt to new cir

Outside looking in: the lived experience of adults with prematurely born siblings.

Siblings have unique relationships; however, not all sibling relationships are typical. In North America, the preterm birth rate ranks second only to Africa in a global climate of rising preterm birth rates. A paucity of literature exists for sibling relationships when one sibling is born prematurely. In this hermeneutic phenomenological study, we explored the lived experience of adult siblings with prematurely born, young adult brothers and sisters who subsequently developed disabilities. The 28 siblings, interviewed with open-ended questions, represented 47 families with extremely-low-birth-

Parents' experience of having a child with autism and learning disabilities living in a group home: a case study.

Some children with autism and learning disabilities also have aberrant behaviours that are difficult to regulate and stressful for both the child and family members. This case study concerns experiences of 10 parents from five families before and 2 years after entrusting their 10- to 11-year-old child with autism to a group home. Hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of narrative interviews with the parents before the child's moving showed them experiencing grief and sorrow, total exhaustion because of inability to regulate their child's behaviours, social isolation, and negative effects on th

The perceptions of homeless people in Stockholm concerning oral health and consequences of dental treatment: a qualitative study.

This study investigated the perceptions of Swedish homeless people concerning their oral health and perceived consequences of dental treatment. Candid, tape-recorded interviews were conducted in a conversational style. A phenomenological-hermeneutical method was used to analyze the subjects' stories. New participants were recruited into the study, until the interviews provided no additional new information, which occurred after eight interviews. All narratives revealed expressions of loss as well as recovery in the informants' life. Both aspects highlighted the fact that homelessness equated t

Adolescent mothers four years later: narratives of the self and visions of the future.

This study examined patterns, variations, and existential turning points in young mothers' narratives of self and their visions of the future as part of a larger hermeneutic, longitudinal study. The study was philosophically based in the phenomenology of everyday practices as inherently meaningful, situated, and historically derived and drew on dialogical views of the self. The sample consisted of 13 (of the original 16) young mothers and family members who had been interviewed 4 years earlier. For the present study, data consisted of life history accounts of the intervening 4 years, stories o

Narratives by district nurses about elder abuse within families.

Twenty-one district nurses (DNs) narrated 44 cases of elder abuse within families. A phenomenological-hermeneutical analysis revealed that the experiences were complex and often included families providing care for an elderly person. The abuse seemed to be related to the inability of one party to meet the care demands required by the elderly, by him- or herself, or by the situation. It also seemed to be related to an inhibiting dependency between the parties, a negative execution of power over the weaker party, and a history of violence. When the experiences were considered within the perspect

When Children's Needs Do Not Fit the System: Street-Level Bureaucrats Facilitating Home Care for Children Living With Respiratory Support.

This study explores the meanings of acting as a street-level bureaucrat in facilitating home care for children living with respiratory support and their families. A phenomenological hermeneutic approach was used, based on interviews with professionals involved in assessment, decision-making and care provision across different parts of the welfare system. The findings show that this work is lived in tensions between compassion and regulation, closeness and distance, and enduring needs and finite resources. Acting as a bureaucrat in this context means being confronted by the vulnerability of the

Anything but Endo: Diagnostic Buck-Passing in Endometriosis Diagnosis.

People living with endometriosis, a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows elsewhere in the body, often experience prolonged diagnostic journeys because of symptom variability, normalisation of period pain and other symptoms, and lack of awareness of the condition. In this article, we analyse the endometriosis diagnostic journey through the lens of epistemic injustice. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 52 people living with endometriosis in the United States, we introduce the concept of diagnostic buck-passing to characterise the phenomenon wherein individuals who

[New Swedish National care process for pediatric obstructive sleep disordered breathing].

Our objective in this article is to add to the understanding of how people with mental illness experience dealing with hearing troublesome voices and sounds in everyday life. Fourteen people contributed through in-depth interviews and we analysed these using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. We found that the participants (a) tried to block out the voices and sounds, (b) navigated the health care services, and (c) struggled to come to terms with limitations. Our overall understanding of how the participants dealt with hearing voices is that they sought to be independent and lead ordinar

There is a lack of both quantitative and qualitative research regarding sex workers in the United States. Embodying Experiences with Nature in Everyday Life Recovery for Persons with Eating Disorders.

Eating disorders can be understood as attempts to manage a problematic relationship with one's own body. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore and discuss perspectives of embodying "experiences with nature" related to recovery in everyday life for persons experiencing eating disorders. The study was carried out in the context of a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Eight participants with an interest in nature and friluftsliv (outdoor pursuits), and with experiences with bulimia nervosa and/or binge-eating disorders, were interviewed twice. Interviews took place in nature,

The process leading to help seeking following childhood trauma.

In this article we explore the process leading to help seeking following childhood trauma among women who were currently in treatment. We interviewed 13 participants from six treatment groups for clients exposed to human-inflicted traumas. Transcripts were analyzed using a hermeneutical-phenomenological approach. Help seeking was initiated after a prolonged period of time (13 to 58 years after first trauma exposure), during which participants relied heavily on a strategy of managing on their own. Self-management contributed to delays in help seeking, but was also an important resource. High le

Unclear boundaries: Family caregivers' invisible role in home-based palliative care in Norway: an exploratory analysis of secondary data from two previous studies.

BACKGROUND: The future need for home-based palliative care is expected to increase significantly. Family caregivers play a crucial role in home settings by ensuring continuity of care, participating in decision-making, and providing both emotional and practical support to their family members. Despite guidelines highlighting the importance of their involvement in providing palliative care at home, inadequate support from healthcare professionals often leaves family caregivers feeling overwhelmed and undervalued. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the pivotal role of family caregivers in h
