Fusion of Multiple-angles Intraoperative US Images and Pretreatment MR Images for USgHIFU Treatment of Uterine Fibroid: Retrospective Evaluation Based on Clinical Dataset.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has been widely used for treatment of uterine fibroids. However, due to the limited resolution of ultrasound image in deep organs, the guidance of ultrasound-guided HIFU (USgHIFU) treatment greatly depends on clinicians' experience in US image. To address this issue, fusion of intraoperative US images and pretreatment MR images has been proposed. Contour segmentation and multiple-angles 2D US images combination are performed to obtain 3D points along the contour of uterus. Iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm based on prior knowledge is used to regis

The outcome of magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity ultrasound for clinically symptomatic submucosal uterine fibroid performed accidentally in very early pregnancy: a case report.

This is a report of an unintended application of MR-HIFU therapy of uterine fibroids (UFs) in a woman in early pregnancy and should be treated as the first description of such an event. A 37-year-old nullipara with confirmed UFs, who suffered from excessive uterine bleeding and dysmenorrhea, was qualified for MR-HIFU therapy to reduce UF-related symptoms. The procedure took place 2 months later. No complications occurred and the patient was discharged home in good overall condition. About 5 weeks after the procedure the patient was diagnosed with viable intrauterine pregnancy. Basing on early

Targeting feasibility evaluation of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound in the management of osteomyelitis: a virtual treatment planning study in 75 patients.

Purpose: Osteomyelitis is one of the most serious complications linked to diabetes and increases the possibility of limb amputation considerably. There exists an important clinical need to improve management of osteomyelitis, especially for diabetic patients who are more susceptible to failures, relapses and chronicity of multiple bone infections. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) can offer a clinical management option for patients with osteomyelitis by providing a non-surgical and potentially rapid-recovery treatment option. Material and Methods: A retrospective study with

Uterine fibroid therapy using interventional radiology mini-invasive treatments: current perspective.

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors of unclear etiopathology that affect the female reproductive tract. They are responsible for considerable morbidity and deterioration of life quality, and may have a negative impact on the reproductive system as well. Besides surgery aided by uterus-saving techniques, several minimally invasive procedures are now available within the field of interventional radiology that represent a valid solution for women who desire pregnancy and relief from disease-specific symptomatology. The main advantages offered by these techniques are low grade of invasivenes

Ultrasound-guided high intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of gynaecological diseases: A review of safety and efficacy.

As a non-surgical treatment, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has received increasing interest for the treatment of gynaecological diseases over the last 10 years. Many studies have shown that HIFU is safe and effective in treating patients with uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, cervicitis or vulvar diseases. Both magnetic resonance imaging-guided HIFU (MRgHIFU) and ultrasound-guided HIFU (USgHIFU) can offer gynaecologists non-invasive techniques to treat patients with uterine benign diseases. Focused ultrasound therapy can also be used effectively to treat cervicitis and vulvar diseases.

Imaging monitored loosening of dense fibrous tissues using high-intensity pulsed ultrasound.

Pulsed high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is proposed as a new alternative treatment for contracture of dense fibrous tissue. It is hypothesized that the pulsed-HIFU can release the contracted tissues by attenuating tensile stiffness along the fiber axis, and that the stiffness reduction can be quantitatively monitored by change of B-mode images. Fresh porcine tendons and ligaments were adapted to an ex vivo model and insonated with pulsed-HIFU for durations ranging from 5 to 30 min. The pulse length was 91 µs with a repetition frequency of 500 Hz, and the peak rarefactional pressure was

Novel high-intensity focused ultrasound clamp--potential adjunct for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Partial nephrectomy (PN) can be technically challenging, especially if performed in a minimally invasive manner. Although ultrasound technology has been shown to have therapeutic capabilities, including tissue ablation and hemostasis, it has not gained clinical use in the PN setting. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability of a high-intensity ultrasound clamp to create an ablation plane in the kidney providing hemostasis that could potentially aid in laparoscopic PN. METHODS: A new instrument was created using a laparoscopic Padron endoscopic exposing retr

Rapid volumetric rewarming of cryopreserved samples using a steerable ultrasound array.

This work presents the characterization and application of a 128-element high-power High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) phased array for the rapid and spatially uniform rewarming of cryopreserved biological samples. The device operates 512 Watts of electrical power with electronically steerable foci, enabling sub-millimeter precision heating over centimeter-scale volumes. Using simulation-informed configurations and iterative focal cycling, we achieve warming rates exceeding 150 °C/min with spatial variations below ±10 °C in mouse organs, and 200 °C/min with ±15 °C homogeneity in agar pha

Predegenerating donor nerve for grafting using focused ultrasound neurotomy.

Early experimental evidence suggests that predegenerated nerve graft enhance axonal growth compared to freshly harvested nerve graft in nerve gap repair. However, the practicality of surgically pre-conditioning nerves for grafting remains a major obstacle. Herein, we aim to investigate the feasibility of focal lesioning of nerve tissue using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and compare the regenerative effects of predegenerated nerve grafts to freshly harvested grafts in a rat sciatic nerve transection and repair model. As a proof of principle, sciatic nerves were exposed for HIFU lesi

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound for essential tremor patients with low skull density ratio: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is a non-invasive treatment option for essential tremor (ET). Its use is often limited to patients with a skull density ratio (SDR) above 0.4, despite reports of positive outcomes in those with lower SDR. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to Cochrane and PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for studies reporting clinical outcomes, sonication strategies, and adverse effects related to MRgFUS for ET according to SDR ratios. Low SDR was defined as ≤

Distant Tumor Response in the Pelvis After Histotripsy of a Metastatic Sarcoma of the Liver in a Patient With Differentiated Liposarcoma.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma with leiomyosarcomatous differentiation is a rare, aggressive subtype of soft tissue sarcoma with limited treatment options. Histotripsy is a novel, non-invasive, non-thermal ablative therapy that uses focused ultrasound to induce mechanical tissue destruction through acoustic cavitation. We report a case of a 72-year-old female with metastatic dedifferentiated liposarcoma who underwent histotripsy for 2 large hepatic metastases after progression on other therapies. Partial liquefaction of tumors was observed on post-procedural imaging. Following a second histotrip
