This report summarizes published findings of a community-based organization in New York City that evaluated and demonstrated the efficacy of the Many Men, Many Voices (3MV) human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention intervention in reducing sexual risk behaviors and increasing protective behaviors among black men who have sex with men (MSM). The intervention addressed social determinants of health (e.g., stigma, discrimination, and homophobia) that can influence the health and well-being of black MSM at high risk for HIV infection. This report also highlig

INTRODUCTION: The LGBTQIA+ community faces pervasive discrimination, including in healthcare settings. This discrimination can be particularly detrimental during hospice and palliative care, where patients are especially vulnerable and may have distinct needs related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the barriers and enablers to accessing equitable and inclusive palliative care for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
METHODS: A self-administered online survey was conducted in November 2023 among LGBTQIA+ adults residing in Portugal. Thematic analysis

BACKGROUND: Limited research has focused on prescription drug misuse among young men who have sex with men (YMSM), or investigated risk factors contributing to misuse. This study aims to investigate the relationship between multiple psychosocial risk factors (i.e., childhood abuse, discrimination, mental health distress) and prescription drug misuse among YMSM who are current substance users.
METHODS: YMSM (N=191) who reported prescription drug misuse in the past 6 months were recruited in Philadelphia between 2012 and 2013 to complete an anonymous survey assessing demographic information, su

Experiences of discrimination and HIV risk in Black men who have sex with men (MSM) need to be examined from the perspective of strength and resilience and not just risk. Scholars have theorized that a strong connection with one's sociocultural identities may increase individuals' ability to cope with discrimination which has been related to positive health outcomes. Scholars have coined the term positive intersectionality to refer to how one's stigmatized identity(ies) can be used to draw strength and create a positive sense of self. The current study is a secondary data analysis of a study o

Because of societal discomfort with atypical expressions of sexual orientation and gender identity, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youths have experienced enhanced developmental challenges compared with their heterosexual peers. A recent special issue of the American Journal of Public Health delineated how social stigma affecting LGBT youths has resulted in a wide range of health disparities, ranging from increased prevalence of depression and substance use to downstream effects, such as an increased risk for cancer and cardiovascular disease when older. We review the clinical s

OBJECTIVE: Despite improvements in structural and biomedical interventions to stop the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), gay and bisexual men continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV. One potential barrier to the uptake of HIV health care services is misconception about HIV prevention. Given high levels of societal stigma related to HIV and homophobia, we grounded the current study in the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework and proposed that experiences of everyday discrimination would be associated with the endorsement of stigmatizing misconceptions about HIV preve

Interpersonal phobias-used here as an analytic label for enduring aversive orientations toward persons or groups, such as xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and ageism-are often framed primarily as fear- or anxiety-driven. That view captures vigilance and avoidance, but it does not fully explain why such aversions are also expressed in the language of contamination, revulsion, exclusion, social cleansing, and sometimes violence. I argue that interpersonal phobias are better understood through a distinction among fear, anger, and disgust than through a fear-centered account alone. Fea

Sexual minority men (SMM) in China are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic, yet utilization of HIV prevention services, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), remains low. This systematic review summarizes the barriers and facilitators to the PrEP care continuum among Chinese SMM using thematic analysis. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in English and Chinese databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, CNKI and WanFang. From 820 records, 50 studies met inclusion criteria, revealing five key themes: (1) sexual

INTRODUCTION: Literature indicates that racism, sexism, homophobia and HIV-related stigma have adverse impacts on health, well-being, and quality of life among HIV-positive women of African descent (African/Black diaspora). However, limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma tailored for these women. This study systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized observational and quasi-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma experienced by this population.

BACKGROUND: The current study uses a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of sexual minority adults in the US to investigate the pathways from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to adulthood suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
METHODS: ACEs were measured at year one, potential mediators at year two, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (suicidal ideation, intent, plan, and attempt) at year three. We conducted an exploratory mediation analysis to identify potential mediating factors linking ACEs to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Ten candidate mediators were examined: social well-bein

Alcohol misuse is a significant health concern among gay, bisexual, same-gender-loving, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Yet, little is known about the severity and predictors of alcohol misuse among self-reported young Black MSM. This study aimed to identify patterns of and factors associated with alcohol misuse in a sample of young Black MSM living in New York City. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial aimed at improving the uptake of HIV testing among 250 MSM aged 18 to 29 were analyzed. Log-binominal regression analyses were conducted to assess the association of demo

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adults are at higher risk of hypertension than their heterosexual counterparts. Sexual minority stressors (i.e., unique stressors attributed to sexual minority identity) are associated with a variety of poor mental and physical health outcomes. Previous research has not tested associations between sexual minority stressors and incident hypertension among sexual minority adults.
PURPOSE: To examine the associations between sexual minority stressors and incident hypertension among sexual minority adults assigned female sex at birth.
METHODS: Using data from a longit

Informed by minority stress and intersectionality frameworks, we examined: 1) associations of sexual identity and race/ethnicity with probable diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-PD) among sexual minority women (SMW; e.g., lesbian, bisexual); and 2) potential additive and interactive associations of minority stressors (discrimination, stigma consciousness, and internalized homonegativity) and potentially traumatic childhood and adulthood events (PTEs) with PTSD-PD. Data come from a large and diverse community sample of SMW (N = 662; age range: 18-82; M = 40.0, SD = 14.0). The sam

Young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) with HIV experience disproportionate rates of trauma, incarceration, poverty, racial discrimination, and homophobia. The synergistic effects of these adverse experiences, along with increased rates of mental health disorders, increase their risk for poor health. To address this need, the study authors adapted a current HIV service model to include a peer-health navigation intervention (WITH U) to attend to behavioral health, health literacy, linkage to services, and psychosocial support for YBMSM with HIV. This longitudinal, mixed-methods, nonexper

Black men who have sex with men and women (BMSMW) are at high risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Despite knowing that HIV/STI risk varies by sexual positioning practices, limited data have characterized the risk profiles of BSMW. This study utilized latent class analysis (LCA) to explore BMSMW's sexual risk profiles regarding condomless sexual positioning practices. Participants were BMSMW in intervention studies in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia. LCA was used to characterize their sexual risk profiles. Age, study location, HIV status, social support, and in

African American men who have sex with men (AAMSM) are vastly overrepresented among people with HIV/AIDS. Using data from 595 AAMSM in Philadelphia, we explored differences in sociodemographics, psychosocial characteristics related to beliefs about ethnicity, sexuality and masculinity, and sexual behavior with men and women by self-reported sexual identity (gay, bisexual, down low, straight). Roughly equivalent numbers identified as gay (40.6 %) and bisexual (41.3 %), while fewer identified as straight (7.6 %) or down low (10.5 %), with significant differences in age, income, history of incarc

This study evaluates associations between internalized homonegativity and demographic factors, drug use behaviors, sexual risk behaviors, and HIV status among men who have sex with men (MSM) and with men and women (MSM/W). Participants were recruited in Los Angeles County using respondent-driven sampling (RDS) and completed the Internalized Homonegativity Inventory (IHNI) and questionnaires on demographic and behavioral factors. Biological samples were tested for HIV and for recent cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin use. The 722 MSM and MSM/W participants were predominantly African American

Individuals within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community who are diagnosed with cancer experience inequitable treatment in healthcare systems worldwide, resulting in dissatisfaction, communication challenges with healthcare providers, and a deep sense of disappointment. Stigma, discrimination, and perceived homophobia further heighten the risk of psychological and attitudinal disorders, including depression and suicidal tendencies, among LGBTQ cancer patients. To comprehensively assess the discrimination faced by LGBTQ cancer patients and gain deeper insights into

BACKGROUND: India has a complex relation with concepts of gender and sexuality. Existing stigma in Indian society results in complex trauma and high psychiatric morbidity. We suggest adaptations to trauma and dissociation-informed therapy to ideally support the Indian queer community.
METHOD: We searched PubMed using the keywords "LGBT India mental health", "LGBT Trauma psychotherapy", and "LGBT India", yielding 174 studies.

Young Black sexually minoritized men living with HIV (SMM-LWH) face interlocking systems of oppression, including racism, homophobia, and HIV-related stigma, that negatively affect mental health. While mental health services can alleviate some of these inequities, many young Black SMM do not access them. This study aimed to examine factors associated with formal (e.g., psychologists) and informal (e.g., peer support groups) mental health service use among young Black SMM-LWH in Atlanta, GA. Between April 2021 and November 2022, we surveyed 200 young Black SMM aged 18-29 years (mean: 25). Guide
