Interpretation bias modification for hostility: A randomized clinical trial.

Objective: Hostility is a transdiagnostic phenomenon that can have a profound negative impact on interpersonal functioning and psychopathological severity. Evidence suggests that cognitive bias modification for interpretation bias (CBM-I) potentially reduces hostility. However, stringent efficacy studies in people with clinical levels of hostility are currently lacking. Method: The present study investigated the effects of CBM-I in two studies: one feasibility study (Study 1) in a mixed clinical-community sample of men (N = 29), and one randomized clinical study (Study 2) in a mixed-gender sam

Friend or foe? Postdivorce hostility among recently divorced individuals.

High levels of hostility often occur during and postdivorce and may significantly affect the quality of life, parent-child relationships, and social functioning of divorcees. Moreover, hostility may predict aggressive and violent behavior. This study sought to (a) compare average general hostility levels of a large sample of Danish divorcees to the norms of the general adult Danish population, (b) compare general hostility levels between male and female divorcees, and (c) investigate the explanatory value of various sociodemographic and divorce-related factors on postdivorce general hostility

Resisting hostility generated by terror: An agent-based study.

We propose an agent-based model leading to a decrease or an increase of hostility between agents after a major cultural threat such as a terrorist attack. The model is inspired from the Terror Management Theory and the Social Judgement Theory. An agent has a cultural identity defined through its acceptance segments about each of three different cultural worldviews (i.e., Atheist, Muslim, Christian) of the considered society. An agent's acceptance segment is composed from its acceptable positions toward a cultural worldview, including its most acceptable position. An agent forms an attitude abo

The neural basis of hostility-related dimensions in schizophrenia.

Hostility and related dimensions like anger, urgency, impulsivity and aggressiveness have been described in non-clinical populations and various serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia. Although representing a mental healthcare challenge, the investigation of such constructs is often limited by the presence of complex and multi-factorial causes and lack of agreement in their conceptualisation and measurement. In this review, we aim to clarify the anatomical basis of hostility-related dimensions in schizophrenia. Imaging studies suggest malfunctioning of a neural circuitry including am

Anger, hostility, and hospitalizations in patients with heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: Heart failure patients have a high hospitalization rate, and anger and hostility are associated with coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. Using structural equation modeling, this prospective study assessed the predictive validity of anger and hostility traits for cardiovascular and all-cause rehospitalizations in patients with heart failure. METHOD: 146 heart failure patients were administered the STAXI and Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory to measure anger, hostility, and their component traits. Hospitalizations were recorded for up to 3 years following baseline. Causes o

Interpersonal hostility and suspicious thinking in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may struggle with hostility and suspicious thinking, but this has not been the subject of much research. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between hostility, suspicious thinking, and OCD severity. Participants included 66 outpatients in treatment for OCD, 27 in treatment for other disorders, and 68 students (n=161). All completed the Inventory of Hostility and Suspicious Thinking (IHS), a measure of psychotic thinking/paranoia, the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II),

Hostility trait and vascular dilatory functions in healthy Taiwanese.

Aim It has been demonstrated that brief episodes of mental stress can cause transient endothelial dysfunction, which is an important early event in atherogenesis. The purpose of this study is to examine the independent effect of hostility trait on resting endothelial function. Objective A total of 89 healthy adults were recruited. Hostility was measured by the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory- Chinese Version- Short Form. Vascular dilatory functions were measured by using ultrasound imaging of the brachial artery before and after cuff occlusion, before and after sublingual nitroglycerin. Conclu

Stress, hostility, and disease parameters of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological factors such as stress are known to influence activity in the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, systems that in turn have been implicated in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Associations between psychological stress and prostate function have not been directly examined. The objective of this study was to examine associations among stress, hostility, and BPH disease parameters. METHODS: Eighty-three men diagnosed with BPH completed self-report and interview measures of stress and hostility followed by measures of

Cerebral activation, hostility, and cardiovascular control during mental stress.

OBJECTIVE: Hostility has been established as a risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease. Putatively pathogenic hemodynamic and neuroendocrine responses to psychological stressors are associated with hostility, but the cerebral effects of hostility and their relationship to these responses are unknown. This pilot study examined cardiovascular and cerebral blood flow responses to stress in subjects with high and low levels of trait hostility. METHODS: Regional cerebral blood flow was measured by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) during a control condition and

Hostility toward caregivers as a selection criterion for transplantation.

Researchers have focused on hostility and aggression of psychiatric patients but little is known about what effects transplant candidates' hostility toward their caregivers has on the care the candidates receive. Hostility is defined as any verbal, nonverbal, or physical behavior which threatens persons or property. Although hostility may be one of the precipitating factors in the need for an organ transplant, it may also be a response of the patient to his or her condition. This study focused on whether transplant coordinators felt that hostility should be used as a criterion for accepting or

[Hostility behavior as risk factor of coronary heart disease].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationships between hostility, and the risks of coronary-prone behavior and the clusters of unhealthy behaviors in individuals with different levels of hostility. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 1 010 male employees from two factories in Beijing Capital Steel and Iron Company in 1997. Data on major risks of cardiovascular, other social-demographic factors and levels of hostility by Cook-Medley Scales were collected. RESULTS: Body mass index, amounts of cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking were significantly increased (P < 0.01) with a char

Hostility, sodium consumption, and cardiovascular response to interpersonal stress.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported poorer health behaviors in high vs. low hostile subjects. The role of stress in these observed differences has not been explored although interpersonal stress does increase cardiovascular response in high hostiles. Given evidence that stress may induce increased salt-intake, this study examined the role of hostility and interpersonal stress in increasing sodium consumption in addition to cardiovascular reactivity. METHOD: Sixty-nine male undergraduates were categorized into high (HiHo) and low hostile (LoHo) groups based on Buss-Durkee Hostility Inven

Hostility, anger-in, and cardiovascular reactivity in white women.

Relations between cardiovascular reactivity and cynical hostility, aggressiveness, antagonism, and anger-in were examined in White college women for conditions of high and low interpersonal stress. High stress was created by having the participants discuss an issue on which they held a strong view with a confederate who adamantly espoused an opposing view. Participants in the low-stress condition discussed an issue on which they held no strong views with a confederate who amicably expressed agreement. Participants higher in cynical hostility exhibited more systolic blood pressure reactivity th

Dimensions of hostility and cardiovascular response to interpersonal stress.

Emerging research suggests that hostility is a multidimensional construct with different dimensions conferring different cardiovascular disease risk. This study examined two dimensions of hostility, expressive and neurotic, and their hemodynamic response patterns upon exposure to interpersonal stress. Fifty-seven male undergraduates were categorized into high and low expressive hostility (HiEH, LoEH) and high and low neurotic hostility (HiNH, LoNH) groups based on their Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory scores. Subjects engaged in a mathematical subtraction task, with half of the subjects harass

Hostility and erosion of marital quality during early marriage.

We examined the association between hostility and longitudinal changes in marital quality in a sample of 53 newlywed couples who were in their first marriages and were without children. Spouses' reports of marital quality were assessed initially at an average of 5 months into marriage and, thereafter, at three follow-up points approximately 1, 2, and 3 years subsequent to the date of marriage. Individual growth models were computed to assess the rate of change of marital quality. Hostility among husbands was significantly associated with linear decreases in their own, and their wives', reports

Interictal aggression in epilepsy: the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory.

Adult patients with left, right, or bilateral temporal lobe epilepsy or absence epilepsy, and normal controls completed the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), a standardized questionnaire of aggressive tendencies. Patients with left temporal lobe seizure foci scores higher on the Suspicion scale than did other patients or controls (p < 0.05). Factor analysis scale scores identified three factors: hostile feelings, covert aggression, and overt aggression. The groups differed on their pattern of factor scores (p < 0.01): patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy scored higher than other gro

Hostility and irritable mood in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Twenty patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia were administered the hostility subscale of Kellner's Symptom Questionnaire and the irritability scales of Paykel's Clinical Interview for Depression and of Kellner's Anxiety Rating Scale before and after behavioral treatment of agoraphobia. A matched control group of normal subjects had the same assessments at two similar points in time. Hostility and irritable mood decreased and friendliness increased in patients with panic disorder after treatment; upon recovery, there were no significant differences in hostility between patient

Hypothalamic involvement in sexuality and hostility: comparative psychological aspects.

Evidence presented in this article shows the representation of sexual and aggressive behaviors at the level of the hypothalamus to be more prominent than in all other brain areas involved. Indeed, there are good arguments to attribute a central position to the hypothalamus within larger structural systems encompassing the limbic system, where aspects of the behaviors involved can be influenced. So far, however, the arguments are purely descriptive and factual and do not contribute much to answering questions about hypothalamic function: the grounds for and consequences of this massive represen
