OBJECTIVE: Substantial literature has documented adverse childhood experiences' (ACEs) link with poor health in childhood and adulthood. Despite many American low-income families spending more than a third of their income toward housing costs, little research has been published about a link between severe housing-cost burden and ACEs. The objective of this study was to examine the association of severe housing-cost burden to the ACEs to which young, low-income children are exposed.
METHODS: Participants were 2-5-year-olds who participated in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Wome

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is an important public health issue, and the number of individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness has increased since 2020. On June 28, 2024, the US Supreme Court issued a 6-to-3 decision in City of Grants Pass v Johnson, which broadened the authority of local governments to prohibit public camping. The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans (NCCHV) offers a 24/7 virtual option for veterans to access services to address housing instability. The objective of this study was to assess whether expanded local enforcement authority affected inflow and characterist

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors face many financial burdens that generate additional stress such as housing insecurity or homelessness. Because this leads to worse health outcomes, it is essential for health care and housing organizations to begin mobilizing resources to support this vulnerable population.
OBJECTIVES: Create a "Housing in Cancer" workgroup to conduct systems-led analysis of housing insecurity in cancer survivorship in the Greater New Orleans area.
METHODS: A cross-sector workgroup employed a systems analysis toolkit to explore the system. The group engaged in systems analysis e

Research examining homelessness in rural areas has been sparse. The current study aims to expand conceptions of rural homelessness by mapping community-level risk factors related to housing insecurity. Geographic information systems (GIS) techniques were used to map the distribution of select community-level risk indicators in the State of Maine. Three methodological choices related to this process are demonstrated: (1) selection and distribution of housing insecurity risk indicators; (2) use of location quotients; and (3) use of spatial lags. After examining and mapping selected risk factors

One of the most significant economic impacts of sexual and dating violence across the lifespan is housing insecurity and homelessness. However, research on the association between housing instability and interpersonal violence among college students is limited. As such, the purpose of this study is to better understand the association between sexual and dating violence victimization and housing security among college students using data from a campus climate assessment administered on two campuses of a large, urban public university in the northeast. To reduce response burden there were rotati

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness have high rates of social needs when presenting for emergency department (ED) services, but less is known about patients with housing instability who do not meet the established definitions of homelessness.
METHODS: We surveyed patients in an urban, safety-net ED from June-August 2018. Patients completed two social needs screening tools and responded to additional questions on housing. Housing status was determined using validated questions about housing stability.
RESULTS: Of the 1,263 eligible patients, 758 (60.0%) completed the survey. Among

BACKGROUND: Homelessness affects over 650,000 Americans annually, with 25% to 30% experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Despite evidence supporting Housing First approaches, implementation remains inconsistent across states, leading to fragmented care delivery and persistent housing instability for vulnerable populations.
PURPOSE: To analyze Housing First implementation across four U.S. states and identify nursing practice and policy implications using the Minnesota Public Health Intervention Wheel framework.
METHODS: Comparative case study analysis of Housing

Many U.S. households face growing difficulty affording housing and related costs, with some missing payments for housing or utilities due to limited resources. Sparse research has examined how housing-related payment hardship relates to well-being over the life course. We used three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health; n = 7673) to estimate associations of two housing-related payment hardship exposures (inability to pay rent/mortgage and utilities) in early adulthood (Wave IV; 2008-2009) with 36 health and well-being outcomes 15 years later (Wave

Chronic stress, known to contribute to negative physical and mental health outcomes, is closely associated with broader issues of material hardship, poor neighborhood conditions, residential instability, and inadequate housing conditions. However, few studies have comprehensively explored pathways to stress in a low-income housing environment. A mixed-methods pilot study investigated the concept of energy insecurity by looking at the impacts of weatherization and energy efficiency interventions on low-income households in the South Bronx neighborhood of New York City. In-depth interviews were

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes key implementation strategies to advance oral and long-acting PrEP delivery for unstably housed people in the United States.
RECENT FINDINGS: People experiencing homelessness and housing instability face barriers to PrEP uptake and adherence including lack of safe medication storage, competing basic needs, insurances issues, and/or mental health or substance use disorders. Recent advancements in HIV treatment and prevention provide evidence on high-touch, low-barrier implementation approaches to address these challenges. We compiled these approaches i

BACKGROUND: Unstable housing and homelessness is prevalent among injection drug users (IDU). We sought to examine whether accessing addiction treatment was associated with attaining stable housing in a prospective cohort of IDU in Vancouver, Canada.
METHODS: We used data collected via the Vancouver Injection Drug User Study (VIDUS) between December 2005 and April 2010. Attaining stable housing was defined as two consecutive "stable housing" designations (i.e., living in an apartment or house) during the follow-up period. We assessed exposure to addiction treatment in the interview prior to th

Intimate partner violence (IPV) frequently leads to housing instability and homelessness among survivors. While the client populations of many housing support programs are likely to include IPV survivors who have unique safety needs, the organizational readiness of these housing providers to identify and support IPV survivors is not clear. This study assessed organizational readiness for IPV response among Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) and Transitional Housing (TH) providers in Maryland, whose client populations include women (n = 32). We adapted the Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Vio

Economic stability is one of the five domains of determinants of health influencing the well-being of families and communities. In this column, the impacts of economic instability, including poverty, employment, food insecurity, and housing instability, will be described. These challenges have unique impacts during pregnancy and the early years, with inequitable and accumulating health burdens over a lifetime. Actions that nurses can take within the NICU setting are described and opportunities for community and policy advocacy are identified.

Intimate partner violence remains a significant public health issue and survivors often need various forms of support to achieve safety. The increased likelihood of experiencing housing instability and homelessness among survivors has led to an uptake in domestic violence agencies implementing housing-based interventions, such as Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF), to address survivors' needs. The present study expands on prior research supporting the effectiveness of DVHF to examine situational factors that moderate the outcomes associated with this model among 406 survivors seeking servi

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with poorer outcomes for both mothers and their newborns. Given the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States, mothers who take opioids during pregnancy may be at particular risk of experiencing food insecurity.
METHODS: This research utilized data from 254 biological mothers of infants in the Advancing Clinical Trials in Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (ACT NOW) Outcomes of Babies with Opioid Exposure (OBOE) Study. We examined factors associated with food insecurity among mothers of infants with antenatal opioid exposure and the

Though housing instability is linked to poor HIV health outcomes, studies that assess the HIV treatment cascade by housing status are limited. Using data from a multi-site Retention in Care initiative we constructed HIV treatment cascades for participants (n = 463) of five grantee sites. We found no significant differences in viral suppression at follow-up among participants who were unstably housed at enrollment (49%) as compared to those who were stably housed at enrollment (54%). Among participants with available data at 6- or 12-month follow-up, 94% were engaged in care, 90% were retained

Although trauma-informed approaches guide services to families experiencing homelessness, more emphasis is placed on securing housing than addressing underlying trauma contributing to housing instability. Examining the stories of 29 homeless and/or unstably housed mothers within the broader literature on family trauma and violence, chronic illness, and cultural aspects of family functioning, we define the process of trauma normativeness and normalization that may occur with repeated trauma experiences and argue that rehousing efforts must include concomitant attention to trauma and to understa

INTRODUCTION: Care and outcomes for patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) are influenced by the social risk factors that they experience. Social risk factors such as food insecurity and housing instability have detrimental effects on patient health and wellness, healthcare outcomes, and health disparities.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined how social risk factors identified in unstructured and structured electronic health record (EHR) data for 1,295 patients with cLBP were associated with health care utilization. We also studied the impact of social risk facto

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity impacts millions of families with children each year and is linked with a range of adverse outcomes. Greater understanding of pathways linking housing insecurity with emotional and behavioral problem is needed to prevent enduring mental health problems. The Family Stress Model and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model contribute understanding to the complex dynamics underlying development from childhood to adolescence in the context of economic hardship and parental strain.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of harsh parenting in th

OBJECTIVE: Accurate, efficient identification of housing-related needs, including homelessness or housing instability, is crucial for health systems addressing health-related social needs (HRSN). We developed and validated a novel, pragmatic electronic health record (EHR)-based algorithm to identify patients with housing-related needs.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We retrospectively evaluated sensitivity and specificity of the housing-related needs algorithm within our safety-net hospital, Boston Medical Center (BMC).
DATA SOURCES AND ANALYTIC SAMPLE: The algorithm included six EHR structured d
