Acute respiratory tract infections pose a serious threat to the health of children worldwide, with viral infections representing a major etiology of this type of disease. Protective measures such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and hand hygiene can be effective in curbing the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. These precautions may also have an impact on the spread of other respiratory viruses. In this study, we retrospectively compared the respiratory virus infections of children in Southwest China before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Nasopharyngeal swabs wer

PML nuclear bodies are cellular structures known to combat DNA viruses. In this study, how human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), a respiratory pathogen, evades this defense was investigated. PATZ1, a host protein that constitutively regulates gene activity, is recruited by the viral NS1-70 protein to form concentrated clusters adjacent to PML bodies. These clusters bind to the viral DNA and suppress its ability to make new viral genes. To overcome this, the virus produces another protein, NS2, which disrupts the PATZ1 condensates and removes them from the viral DNA, allowing the virus to resume replicati

The etiologic role of recently identified respiratory viruses for acute wheezing in children is not yet clear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of recently identified viruses, including human metapneumovirus (hMPV), human bocavirus (hBoV), human coronavirus NL63 (hCoV-NL63), and human coronavirus HKU1 (hCoV-HKU1) in children with acute wheezing. Viral etiology was identified in 231 children hospitalized with acute wheezing, aged from 1 month to 5 years. Viral antigens for common respiratory viruses were detected by IFA or multiplex PCR. RT-PCR was used to detect resp

We examined stool specimens for viral pathogens from 50 children referred to hospital due to acute gastroenteritis (AGE) resulting from consuming drinking water contaminated with sewage in a Finnish community using PCR methods. Rotavirus was detected in 33 (66%), human calicivirus in 31 (62%), and both in 40% of cases. Of the caliciviruses, 20/31 (65%) were noroviruses and 11 (35%) sapoviruses. Furthermore, Aichi virus was detected in 25 (50%), adenovirus in six (12%) and bocavirus in four (8%) cases. Campylobacter jejuni was present in 20 (61%) and Salmonella in four (12%) of the 33 stools cu

In the general population, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and SARS-CoV-2 are considered the most severe community-acquired respiratory viruses (CARVs). However, allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) recipients may also face severe courses from other CARVs. This retrospective study compared outcomes of various CARV lower respiratory tract diseases (LRTD) in 235 adult allo-SCT recipients, excluding co-infection episodes. We included 235 adults allo-SCT recipients experiencing 353 CARV LRTD consecutive episodes (130 rhinovirus, 63 respiratory syncytial virus, 43 influenza, 43

Atypical pneumonia was first described in 1938, and over time, Mycoplasma, Legionella, and Chlamydophila were the agents commonly linked with community-associated atypical pneumonia. However, as technology has improved, so has our understanding of this clinical entity. It is now known that there are many agents linked with atypical pneumonia in the community, and many of these agents are also major causes of healthcare-associated pneumonia. This article discusses the history, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of infection; control of infection; clinical findings; diagnosis; and, where applicable,

OBJECTIVES: The etiologic pathogen is unknown for many pediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) cases. We aimed to identify the causes of CAP of unknown etiology (CAP-UKN) using broad-panel targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS).
METHODS: A prospective surveillance study was conducted across 26 hospitals in Korea (September 2023 to November 2024). CAP cases with no identified pathogen were defined as CAP-NPD; cases wherein no pathogen or only human rhinovirus (HRV), human bocavirus (HBoV), human coronavirus (HCoV), or normal colonizing bacteria were detected were classified as CAP-UKN

Viral bivalve contamination is a recognized food safety hazard. Therefore, this study investigated the detection rates, seasonality, quantification, and genetic diversity of enteric viruses in bivalve samples (mussels and oysters). We collected 97 shellfish samples between March 2018 and February 2020. The screening of samples by qPCR or RT-qPCR revealed the detection of norovirus (42.3%), rotavirus A (RVA; 16.5%), human adenovirus (HAdV; 24.7%), and human bocavirus (HBoV; 13.4%). There was no detection of hepatitis A virus. In total, 58.8% of shellfish samples tested positive for one or more

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and related public health intervention measures have been reported to have resulted in the reduction of infections caused by influenza viruses and other common respiratory viruses. However, the influence may be varied in areas that have different ecological, economic, and social conditions. This study investigated the changing epidemiology of 8 common respiratory pathogens, including Influenza A (IFVA), Influenza B (IFVB), Respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), rhinovirus (RV), Human metapneumovirus Adenovirus, Human bocavirus, and Mycoplasma pneum

Respiratory viral infection is a common disease even among immunocompetent individuals. Moreover, approximately 40% of the hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients suffer from a respiratory infection within 100 days after HCT. New respiratory viruses have been continuously identified in the past 20 years, such as new strains of coronaviruses (CoV), human metapneumovirus (HMPV), and human bocavirus (BoV). In 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 that caused the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic was identified. The 30-day overall survival after lower r

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the major viral cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections in children. Few data about the molecular epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus in developing countries, such as Jordan, are available. The frequency and severity of infections caused by HRSV were assessed in hospitalized Jordanian children <5 years of age compared with other potential etiological agents. Overall a potential pathogen was detected in 78% (254/326) of the children. HRSV was detected in 43% (140/326) of the nasopharyngeal aspirates. HRSV was found more frequently du

Feline bocaviruses (FBoVs) have been recognized as novel feline pathogens associated with gastrointestinal diseases. Although bocavirus infections in humans and animals present a broad range of clinical symptoms including neurologic diseases, the neuropathology caused by FBoV infection in cats is unknown. This study aims to investigate the presence of bocavirus in the brain samples of 78 cats showing neurologic deficits and 41 healthy cats using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and to present the pathological findings of FBoV infection in brain tissues. Only five (6.41%, five out of 78) cats wi

This case of a child presenting with severe acute respiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to plastic bronchitis demonstrates the possibility of developing this rare condition despite having no known underlying inflammatory or lymphatic issues. The normal lymphatic anatomy and flow in our patient several weeks after the acute illness suggests a transient lymphatic flow abnormality possibly driven by the acute lower respiratory tract infection with human bocavirus-1 (HBoV1). As there are now four patients in the literature identified with Plastic bronchitis (PB) in
