Congenital multi-organ malformations in a Holstein calf.

A 5-day-old female Holstein calf was necropsied because of lethargy, recumbency and anorexia. At necropsy, multiple gross defects were evident in several organs, including unclosed sutures of skull bones, asymmetrical orbits, doming of the skull bones, hydrocephalus, hydranencephaly, cleft palate, brachygnathia, ventricular septal defect, mitral valve dysplasia and rudimentary lungs. On microscopic examination, pulmonary hypoplasia was characterized by reduced number of alveoli, replacement of peri-bronchiolar smooth muscles with connective tissue and small masses of undeveloped cartilage arou

[Congenital hydrocephalus: clinico-pathological picture].

The authors review the main pathologic causes of congenital hydrocephalus from ischemic-vascular injuries, embryofoetal infections and dysraphisms to genetic ones. Abundant illustrations of each condition are furnished and particular attention is paid to each situation, discussing the available pathogenetic mechanisms and hypothesis. Genetic "sine causa" hydrocephalus and X-linked hydrocephalus are mainly stressed, presenting some personal data. The clinic aspects of the varying forms of hydrocephalus are continuously kept in mind and a terminal paragraph details the clinical and neuroradiolog

Association of prenatal vascular disruptions with decreased maternal age.

Disruptions of fetal structures can create a variety of congenital anomalies. Some apparent prenatal vascular disruptions associate strongly with decreased maternal age, and are rare with older mothers. This is well-documented for gastroschisis, but similar findings with hydranencephaly suggest a general phenomenon that may also involve porencephaly, septo-optic dysplasia, early body stalk disruptions, certain hemifacial anomalies, and other findings. Prenatal vascular disruption may be a common cause of congenital anomalies, but its nature is unknown, and obvious environmental confounders ass

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of Dandy-Walker malformation and type III lissencephaly: A novel association.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) may occur as part of Mendelian disorders such as Walker-Warburg and Meckel-Gruber syndromes. We report a novel association with type III lissencephaly in a 22-week male fetus. Ultrasound showed fetal akinesia deformation sequence, single umbilical artery, microlissencephaly, hydranencephaly with cerebral lamination, DWM, and pontocerebellar hypoplasia. These abnormalities were confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and autopsy, which also revealed pulmonary and adrenal hypoplasia, common mesentery and bilateral uretero-pyelo-calyceal dilatation. Neuropathologic

Severe outcome of brain perfusion failure: a pre-hydranencephalic state?

Four children surviving severe hypoxic-ischemic brain damage showed subtotal destruction of the cerebral hemispheres, with partial preservation of some infratentorial and supratentorial brain structures. True multicystic encephalopathy features were identified in two cases on CT scanning. The other patients showed more pronounced brain tissue destruction, with overall malacia of the hemispheres. An echographic study demonstrated that the brain damage occurred progressively, within about one month, and was preceded by oedema, white matter malacia and cavitation. The role of the compensatory mec

Alcohol embryo- and fetopathy. Neuropathology of 3 children and 3 fetuses.

Maternal chronic ethanol abuse during pregnancy causes malformations of the offspring. Three children (aged 6 months, 9 months, 4 1/2 years) and 3 fetuses (17th, 18th, and 20th gestational week) showed a wide spectrum of disorders ranging from severe dysraphic state, arhinencephaly, porencephaly, agenesis of corpus callosum, a range from hydranencephaly to microdysplasias (p.e. reduced gyration of dentate nucleus and inferior olives), and a range from gastrochisis or congenital heart defects to craniofacial dysmorphogenesis and palmar crease anomalies. The patterns of the cerebral malformation

Two related cases of cerebellar abnormality in equine fetuses associated with hydrops of fetal membranes.

Hydrops allantois was diagnosed in two Haflinger mares with severe abdominal distension. Both mares were seven months pregnant. Abortion was induced with two injections of prostaglandin six hours apart followed by further manual dilation of the cervix and administration of oxytocin the next day. There were 90 and 95 litres of fluid, respectively, in the allantoic cavities which resembled extracellular fluid with regard to concentrations of urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and chloride, but not total protein. Both fetuses had severe brain abnormalities which we

[Case of a Japanese female presenting severe achondroplasia with developmental delay and acanthosis nigricans (SADDAN) syndrome with a K650M mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene].

We diagnosed a Japanese female as having severe achondroplasia with developmental delay and acanthosis nigricans (SADDAN) syndrome. Genetic analysis revealed a K650M point mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene, described in only six other individuals in the world. The medical history of the present case includes severe skeletal dysplasia at birth, progressive acanthosis nigricans in infancy, and severe central nervous system structural abnormalities, consisting of the absence of right cerebral hemisphere (hydranencephaly), ventricular dilatation, both indicating cong

The Evolution of Cephalocentesis in Contemporary Obstetric Practice: From Emergency Intervention to Planned Procedure.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: The aim of the study was to analyze the evolution, indications, and outcomes of cephalocentesis over a 38-year period at two tertiary fetal medicine centers. METHODS: A retrospective review of 70 cephalocentesis procedures (1985-2023) was conducted at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, and the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin. Cases were divided into pre-2002 (n = 37) and 2002-onward (n = 33) cohorts in order to evaluate practice evolution. RESULTS: Mean gestational age at diagnosis was 32.7 ± 5.4 weeks with severe hydrocephalus in 95.7% (67/70) and hydranencephal

Concurrent peste des petits ruminants virus and pestivirus infection in stillborn twin lambs.

Concurrent infection with peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) and pestivirus was diagnosed in stillborn twin lambs. With the flock history, the findings of epidermal syncytial cells and necrotizing bronchitis/bronchiolitis prompted testing for PPRV infection, and PPRV antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the skin, lungs, kidneys, rumen, and thymus. Macroscopic anomalies that were typical of border disease included scoliosis, brachygnathism, prognathism, arthrogryposis, hydranencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, and hairy fleece; pestiviral antigen was detected by IHC in the b

Congenital brain malformations associated with COL4A1 gene mutations: A case series.

Mutations in the COL4A1 gene, which encodes one of the chains of type IV collagen, affect the basement membrane of various organs, including the brain, eyes, kidneys, and skeletal muscle. These abnormalities can manifest as early as fetal life with a highly variable clinical spectrum, particularly in the central nervous system, where conditions such as intracerebral hemorrhages, porencephaly, hydranencephaly, schizencephaly, hydrocephalus, and periventricular leukomalacia are observed. Extracerebral manifestations include congenital cataracts, intraocular hypertension, hematuria, and arrhythmi

Pseudoaprosencephaly: Aplasia of the Forebrain in a Median Facial Cleft Syndrome with Arhinia and Anophthalmia.

Report of a female fetus aborted at the 25th week of gestation, with severe microcephalus, trigonocephaly, median cleft lip and palate, arhinia, and anophthalmia. On opening of the skull the cranial cavity seemed to be occupied only by hindbrain structures. The forebrain, including the tentorium cerebelli and the falx were absent. However, in the light microscope membraneous remnants of a collapsed forebrain vesicle were found. They were connected with the mid-brain brain and appeared as glio-mesenchymal membranes with an ependymal out-line at their inner surface. There was no cranioschisis. T

Choroid Plexectomy for Hydrocephalus Management in a Pediatric Patient with a Pilocytic Astrocytoma.

Choroid plexectomy is a debated surgical intervention for the treatment of hydranencephaly and chronic infected hydrocephalus. We present a case of a 2-year-old with multiple shunt revisions and hydrocephalus secondary to a pilocytic astrocytoma. He presented with new somnolence, vomiting, and abdominal distension 5 months post subtotal tumor resection, with a history of shunt revisions and infections related to his chemotherapy-induced low white blood cell count. He underwent choroid plexus coagulation and resection. Three years post choroid plexectomy, the patient continues to meet neurodeve

Teratogenicity of a mutagenised Rift Valley fever virus (MVP 12) in sheep.

A 5-fluorouracil mutagenised Rift Valley fever virus strain, which was shown to be attenuated and immunogenic in cattle and sheep, was evaluated for its ability to cause teratogenic effects in pregnant sheep. A group of 50 sheep at various stages of pregnancy was inoculated with the virus and the pregnancies followed to term. There were two abortions and 14% of the lambs produced by vaccinated ewes showed teratogenic effects, the most prevalent being spinal hypoplasia, hydranencephaly, brachygnathia inferior and arthrygryposis. The foetal malformations of the central nervous and musculo-skelet

Ultrasonographic study of children suspected of hydrocephalus at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi.

Eighty Malawian children aged below 15 months who presented with rapidly enlarging head and were suspected of having hydrocephalus were investigated with anterior fontanelle ultrasonography at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), Blantyre. Of the 68 (85%) who were found to have hydrocephalus, 35 (51.5%) were post infective, 14 (20.6%) were associated with lumbosacral myelomeningocele, 13(19.1%) were post haemorrhagic and the rest probably congenital or idiopathic. The remaining 12 patients with macrocephaly but without hydrocephalus comprised six children with hydranencephaly, five wit

MRI of the head in the evaluation of microcephaly.

Fifty-five patients with microcephaly (head circumference < -2SD) were identified. The 55 patients were divided into two groups, consisting of group 1 (34 cases) in which genetic causes were considered primary, and group 2 (21 cases) in which intrauterine and/or postnatal acquired factors were thought to be responsible. MRI abnormalities were present in 80% of the total series: 68 and 100% in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In group 1, migration abnormalities were the most prominent and mental retardation was the major neurological handicap, while in group 2, hydranencephaly and infarction secon

Myopathy and encephalopathy in chick embryos experimentally infected with Akabane virus.

Chick embryos infected with Akabane virus by the yolk sac route at 6 days of incubation developed polymyositis and encephalitis. At 3 to 7 days after inoculation, skeletal muscles had myotubule degeneration, clumping of muscle cell nuclei, and infiltration of heterophils; dysplasia and aplasia were evident at 9 to 15 days after inoculation. Changes in the cerebral neostriatum and optic lobes at 2 to 11 days after inoculation included necrosis of primordial nervous tissue, hemorrhages, and hyperplasia of the vascular endothelial cells. Cavities were in nervous tissue subsequent to encephalitis.
