Hydrogen Bonding Promoting Charge Recombination over Carbon Nitride Nanodots for Fluorescent Chemosensing of Carbon Dioxide.

Developing a sample fluorescent sensor without modification of fluorophores with specific CO2-responsive groups for high efficient CO2 detection presents considerable technical challenges, particularly for room-temperature detection. Herein, an innovative fluorescent turn-on chemosensor based on amino- and hydroxyl-comodified carbon nitride nanodots (CNNDs) was developed, which exhibited remarkable room-temperature CO2 detection performance without introducing any other organic compounds. This impressive performance was attributed to the dissolution of CO2 in water to form H2CO3 and the ionize

Tuning the Photophysical Properties of BODIPY Dyes and Studying Their Self-Assembly via Hydrogen Bonding.

Here, BODIPY derivatives were functionalized with barbituric acid, which has multiple hydrogen bonding abilities that are directional, to have highly ordered hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembled structures to tune BODIPY's photophysical properties. The synthesis of barbituric acid-functionalized BODIPY derivatives via Vilsmeier and Knoevenagel reactions was achieved, and the resulting compounds were characterized with FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembled structures were investigated through UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry,

Inter-molecular hydrogen bonding in N-methyl-N'-(pyridin-2-yl)benzene-1,2-di-amine.

The structure of N-methyl-N'-(pyridin-2-yl)benzene-1,2-di-amine, C12H13N3, at 123 K has ortho-rhom-bic (Pna21) symmetry. The title compound displays an unexpected proton-splitting pattern when studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray crystallography analysis determined this to be caused by strong dual N-H⋯N hydrogen bonding.

Solvent based hydrogen bonding: impact on poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanoscale morphology and charge transport characteristics.

We demonstrate that supramolecular assembly and subsequent enhancement of charge transport characteristics of conjugated polymers can be facilitated simply by adding small amounts of a more volatile poor solvent, which can hydrogen bond with the majority solvent. Addition of up to 2 vol % acetone to a precursor solution of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in chloroform leads to approximately a 4-fold increase in P3HT field-effect mobility. The improvement is associated with hydrogen bonding interactions between acetone and chloroform which decrease the evaporation rate of the mixed solvent. P3HT

Hydrogen-bonding effects on the formation and lifetimes of charge-separated states in molecular triads.

Photoinduced electron transfer in two molecular triads comprised of a triarylamine donor, a d(6) metal diimine photosensitizer, and a 9,10-anthraquinone acceptor was investigated with particular focus on the influence of hydrogen-bonding solvents on the electron transfer kinetics. Photoexcitation of the ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) sensitizers of these triads leads to charge-separated states containing an oxidized triarylamine unit and a reduced anthraquinone moiety. The kinetics for formation of these charge-separated states were explored by using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

Hydrogen bonding and cation coordination effects in primary and secondary amines dissolved in carbon tetrachloride.

Raman and infrared spectroscopy were used to investigate hydrogen-bonding interactions and cation coordination effects in solutions of lithium triflate (LiCF3SO3) dissolved in two primary amines, hexylamine (HEXA) and N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (DMEDA), and in a secondary amine, dipropylamine (DPA). Strong intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions and weaker intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions that occur only in DMEDA were spectroscopically distinguished in a comparison of pure HEXA, pure DMEDA, and the dilute solutions of these amines in CCl4. The spectroscopic shifts in intensit

Merocyanine dyes containing imide functional groups: synthesis and studies on hydrogen bonding to melamine receptors.

The condensation of the CH acidic heterocycles 4-alkyl-2,6-dioxo-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carbonitrile (5a and b) and barbituric acid (15) with electron-rich thiophene aldehydes and benzaldehyde derivatives affords the respective monomethine dyes 10-13 and 17-19. The formylation of 5a,b and 15 with N,N'-diphenylformamidine or dibutylformamide in acetic anhydride and further reaction with 4-picolinium salts 9a,b provide the dimethine dyes 14 and 20a,b. Triple hydrogen bonding of the imide groups of merocyanine dyes 10-14 has been investigated by NMR titration experiments with melamine 21. D

Hydrogen Bond Network Descriptors Dictate Reactivity and Selectivity of CO2 Electroreduction.

The hydrogen bond network (HBN) of water plays a key role in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, a systematic understanding of the HBN and the establishment of predictive descriptors remain lacking, which hinders the rational design of effective electrochemical systems. In this work, two descriptors, hydrogen bond (HB) strength and HB number, are introduced to characterize the flexibility and connectivity of the HBN, respectively. By adding a series of urea derivatives to the electrolyte, both HB strength and HB number can be continuously tuned, enabling precise modul

Polymorphism-Controlled Exciton Dissociation in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Photocatalysts.

Organic photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention, while multiple interrelated factors influence photocatalytic activity, making it challenging to identify the dominant structural features that govern performance. Here, we report two pyrene-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework polymorphs, H4PTBA-AA and H4PTBA-ABC, which exhibit nearly identical light absorption, hydrophilicity, and dispersed particle sizes, but they show markedly different excited-state behaviors. Spectroscopic studies reveal that H4PTBA-AA shows smaller exciton binding energy and preferentially forms a charge-trans

Quadruple Hydrogen-Bonds Engineering for Intrinsically Stretchable and Healable Semiconducting Polymers.

Developing intrinsically stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers with high charge-carrier mobility is critical for next-generation flexible electronics; however, integrating these conflicting functionalities remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a "quadruple-hydrogen-bonds end-capping" strategy to realize high-performance stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers. By incorporating quadruple hydrogen-bonds between end-capping units linked with alkyl spacers into polymer backbone, we engineer a supramolecular architecture that achieves enhanced crystallinity and improve

Multivariate Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Optimum Atmospheric Water Harvesting.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer atomic-precision platforms for probing water adsorption, yet monotonic building units often fail to meet the multifaceted demands of atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). In this study, a multivariate (MTV) strategy is employed to tune adsorption onset, work capacity, and cycling stability in HOFs. Introducing amino groups in controlled ratios creates a balance between hydrophilic sites and dynamic confinement within ordered frameworks. Specifically, the parent HOF, PFC-76, was constructed from the organic linker [1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-te

Hydrogen-Bond Duality Underlying the Enthalpy Anomaly in D2O-Ethanol Mixtures.

Thermodynamic anomalies in aqueous ethanol mixtures, such as the well-known enthalpy minimum at intermediate concentrations, have long eluded a clear molecular-level explanation. Here, we employ excess Raman spectroscopy (ERS) and two-dimensional correlation Raman spectroscopy (2DCRS) to track hydrogen-bond transformations in D2O-ethanol mixtures. The spectra reveal two distinct types of hydrogen-bonding interactions formed between ethanol and water molecules near the ethanol volume fraction of 0.4, where the enthalpy minimum occurs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that t

Cyclic cooperativity contributions determine the hydrogen bond strengths in molecular clusters.

In a recent communication (A. Shivhare, B. Dehariya, S. R. Gadre and M. M. Deshmukh, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2024, 26, 21332), we proposed a method for calculating the energy of a hydrogen bond (HB), which is common to two or more cyclic networks of HBs in water (H2O)n clusters. For this purpose, the sum of the cooperativity contributions (CCs) of these cyclic structures, estimated using the molecular tailoring approach (MTA)-based method, was added to the energy of this HB in the respective water dimer isolated from the cluster. The HB energies calculated in this fashion (ESynergeticHB) were

A-H···π Hydrogen Bonds-Where Are Proton Acceptor Sites Located?

Different types of A-H···π hydrogen bonds are analyzed. Two extreme categories of this interaction may be specified: the first category where the A-H bond is directed to a center of the π-electron system and the second category where this bond is directed far from such a center to a carbon atom, for example, if a π-electron donor is a system of carbon centers. However, the categorization is more complicated, since there are numerous intermediate cases. The Cambridge Structural Database searches were performed here to find the first category of interactions; these are π-electron systems with th

Elucidating the roles of electrolytes and hydrogen bonding in the dewetting dynamics of the tear film.

This study explores the impact of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding on tear film stability, a crucial factor for ocular surface health. While mucosal and meibomian layers have been extensively studied, the role of electrolytes in the aqueous phase remains unclear. Dry eye syndrome, characterized by insufficient tear quantity or quality, is associated with hyperosmolality, making electrolyte composition an important factor that might impact tear stability. Using a model buffer solution on a silica glass dome, we simulated physiologically relevant tear film conditions. Sodium chlor

Flexible Luminescent Hydrogen-bonded Organic Framework for the Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane.

A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond Improved Durability and Kinetics for Zinc-Organic Batteries.

Organic compounds have the advantages of green sustainability and high designability, but their high solubility leads to poor durability of zinc-organic batteries. Herein, a high-performance quinone-based polymer (H-PNADBQ) material is designed by introducing an intramolecular hydrogen bonding (HB) strategy. The intramolecular HB (C=O⋯N-H) is formed in the reaction of 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,5-naphthalene diamine, which efficiently reduces the H-PNADBQ solubility and enhances its charge transfer in theory. In situ ultraviolet-visible analysis further reveals the insolubility of H-PNADBQ during

An Intramolecular CAr-H•••O=C Hydrogen Bond and the Configuration of Rotenoids.

Over the past half a century, the structure and configuration of the rotenoids, a group of natural products showing multiple promising bioactivities, have been established by interpretation of their NMR and electronic circular dichroism spectra and confirmed by analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The chemical shift of the H-6' 1H NMR resonance has been found to be an indicator of either a cis or trans C/D ring system. In the present study, four structures representing the central rings of a cis-, a trans-, a dehydro-, and an oxadehydro-rotenoid have been plotted using the Mercur
