Nephrotic-range proteinuria and hyperglycemia associated with clonidine therapy.

Glycosuria, hyperglycemia, and nephrotic-range proteinuria developed in a 68-year-old patient after clonidine was added to a stable antihypertensive regimen, which included metoprolol, of three years' duration. He later became glucose-intolerant with fasting hyperglycemia. Clonidine has been reported to transiently impair glucose tolerance. Persistent diabetes in a previously normoglycemic patient following clonidine has not been reported, and it supports the possibility that clonidine and metoprolol may have additive effects in suppressing endogenous insulin secretion.

The coordinated actions of metformin in the intestine and liver improves hyperglycemia.

Metformin is the first-line oral anti-diabetic agent. Metformin concentrations in the intestine can reach up to 1.3 mM, while those in the portal vein are approximately 0.075 mM. It is unclear whether this metformin concentration difference contributes to metformin's antidiabetic effects. Here, we showed that high metformin concentrations upregulate G6PC expression through AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation to prevent glucose release in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). The inhibition of mitochondrial activity by high metformin concentrations leads to drastically increased glucos

The Association of Handgrip Strength in the Second Trimester with Gestational Hyperglycemia.

PURPOSE: While handgrip strength (HGS) is linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in adults, its association with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is unclear. We aimed to assess associations of second-trimester HGS with GDM and glucose metabolism, and to determine its predictive value for GDM. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective cohort study enrolled 1904 pregnant women from Hefei, China. HGS was assessed using a dynamometer at recruitment between 16 and 23 wk of gestation. Logistic regression models were used to assess the relation between HGS quartiles and GDM risk, based on standard

Timing and Risk Factors for Hyperglycemia Associated With Anamorelin Administration.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anamorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist, alleviates cancer cachexia by stimulating appetite and growth hormone secretion but may induce hyperglycemia via insulin resistance. Although clinical trials have reported a low incidence of this adverse effect, severe cases have been described, and evidence regarding onset timing and risk factors in real-world practice is scarce. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included patients with non-small-cell lung, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers who received anamorelin between June 2021 and September 2023.

Anchoring on Hyperglycemia and Sepsis in the Presence of an Unforeseen Thyroid Storm.

Thyroid storm (TS) is a relatively rare but life-threatening complication of an overactive thyroid that can manifest in a myriad of ways due to its multisystem involvement. Due to its relatively high mortality rate, it is essential that TS is recognized and treated promptly. TS can occur due to trauma, drugs, and sepsis. Identifying TS as a diagnosis is challenging to pinpoint due to its similar presentation to more common pathologies like sepsis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Here, we present a case of a 31-year-old African-American woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus following sepsis secon

Maternal Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy and Offspring Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal glycemic markers during pregnancy and offspring behaviors at 3 and 5 years. We hypothesized that exposure to maternal hyperglycemia would be associated with more behavioral problems in offspring. METHODS: We included 548 mother-child pairs from the prospective pre-birth Gen3G cohort (Canada). Glycemic markers were measured during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in the second trimester of pregnancy. Based on OGTT, we classified 59 women (10.8%) as having GDM according to intern

The Intestinal and Biliary Metabolites of Ibuprofen in the Rat with Experimental Hyperglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is reported to be associated with oxidative stress. It can result in changes in the activities of drug-metabolizing enzymes and membrane-integrated transporters, which can modify the fate of drugs and other xenobiotics; furthermore, it can result in the formation of non-enzyme catalyzed oxidative metabolites. The present work aimed to investigate how experimental hyperglycemia affects the intestinal and biliary appearance of the oxidative and Phase II metabolites of ibuprofen in rats. In vivo studies were performed by luminal perfusion of 250 μM racemic ibuprofen solution in cont

Salivary Biomarkers as Predictors of Obesity and Intermediate Hyperglycemia in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood obesity presents a major risk for metabolic diseases in adulthood. Noninvasive methods are needed for predicting the course of obesity in children and its complications. Using blood for longitudinal analyses of biomarkers to predict disease in children is not a convenient method. Saliva presents a noninvasive platform to detect inflammatory changes in biomarkers as possible predictive measures of future pathological events. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between specific salivary biomarkers, obesity, and intermediate hyperglycemia in

Management of Hyperglycemia in Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

The increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes in the general population as well as enhanced life expectancy has resulted in a rapid rise in the prevalence of diabetes in the older population. Diabetes causes significant morbidity and impairs quality of life. Managing diabetes in older adults is a daunting task due to unique health and psychosocial challenges. Medical management is complicated by polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, urinary incontinence, injurious falls, and persistent pain. Health care providers now have several traditional and contemporary pharmacologic agents to manage diabetes

Electroencephalogram Reactivity to Hyperglycemia in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes.

This paper is concerned with a study of hyperglycemia on four patients with type 1 diabetes at night time. We investigated the association between hyperglycemic episodes and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using data from the central and occipital areas. The power spectral density of the brain waves was estimated to compare the difference between hyperglycemia and euglycemia using the hyperglycemic threshold of 8.3 mmol/L. The statistical results showed that alpha and beta bands were more sensitive to hyperglycemic episodes than delta and theta bands. During hyperglycemia, whereas the alpha

Stress Hyperglycemia and Stroke Outcome in Patients with Acute Stroke.

Stroke is leading cause of death world wide, after coronary artery disease and cancer. A high proportion of patients suffering from an acute stress such as stroke or myocardial infarction may develop hyperglycemia, even in the absence of a preexisting diagnosis of diabetes. An observational comparative study was carried out at the Department of Neurology and Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2011 to June 2013 among purposively selected ninety-three patients with a view to assess the outcome of stress hyperglycemia on acute stroke. Data were collected throug

[Hyperglycemia as a risk factor for mortality in critically ill neonates].

BACKGROUND: The sick neonate is susceptible to uncontrolled hyperglycemia by several factors. Our objective was to determine the mortality-predictive role of hyperglycemia in critically ill neonates. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted in neonates admitted during the first hour of life in the intensive care unit. Prenatal and perinatal variables were recorded including ventilatory management, comorbidities, arterial blood gas, blood chemistry and blood count. Serum glucose greater than or equal to 126 mg/dL and greater than or equal to 180 mg/dL was considered consistent with hyperglycemia

Occipital seizures and subcortical T2 hypointensity in the setting of hyperglycemia.

INTRODUCTION: Occipital lobe seizures are a recognized manifestation of diabetic nonketotic hyperglycemia, though not as common as focal motor seizures. Occipital lobe white matter T2 hypointensity may suggest this diagnosis. METHODS: We present a case of a 66-year-old man with hyperglycemia-related occipital lobe seizures who presented with confusion, intermittent visual hallucinations, and homonymous hemianopia. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging showed subcortical T2 hypointensity within the left occipital lobe with adjacent leptomeningeal enhancement. These findings were transient with

Salivary proteins associated with hyperglycemia in diabetes: a proteomic analysis.

Effective monitoring of glucose levels is necessary for patients to achieve greater control over their diabetes. However, only about a quarter of subjects with diabetes who requires close serum glucose monitoring, regularly check their serum glucose daily. One of the potential barriers to patient compliance is the blood sampling requirement. Saliva and its protein contents can be altered in subjects with diabetes, possibly due to changes in glycemic control. We propose here that salivary proteomes of subjects with diabetes may be different based on their glycemic control as reflected in A1C le

[Hyperglycemia due to atypical antipsychotics in cancer patients with delirium].

We investigated hyperglycemia due to atypical antipsychotics in cancer patients with delirium. Using patient records retrospectively, we investigated 189 cancer patients who were diagnosed with delirium between June 2008 and May 2009. One- hundred fifty-four of the 189 patients used atypical antipsychotics for delirium treatment. Three percent(5/154)of them were admitted with over 350 mg/dL blood glucose during their atypical antipsychotics treatment, however, all cases did not relate the adverse reaction of hyperglycemia with the use of antipsychotics. Most cancer patients with delirium used

Hyperglycemia increases the risk of death in extremely preterm baboons.

BACKGROUND: Transient neonatal hyperglycemia (HG) has been reported in up to 80% of extremely preterm human infants. We hypothesize that severe HG is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in preterm baboons. METHODS: Sixty-six baboons born at 67% of gestation were studied. HG was defined as serum glucose level ≥150 mg/dl during the first week of life. Animals were stratified into two groups: severe HG (≥8 events) and nonsevere HG (<8 events). RESULTS: HG developed in 65 of the 66 (98%) baboons that were included. A total of 3,386 glucose measurements were obtained. The mean serum

Hyperglycemia is a strong prognostic factor of lethality in methanol poisoning.

Methanol poisoning is seen in the form of isolated episodes, or intentional ingestion and epidemics. Despite its efficient treatment, methanol poisoning has high morbidity and mortality rates. So far, several studies have been performed to identify the prognostic factors in methanol poisoning. Recently, during the treatment of patients with methanol poisoning, we observed that patients' blood glucose levels were high on presentation to the hospital, particularly in those who expired. Through a literature search, we found that no studies have been performed on blood glucose levels or hyperglyce
