Dry Ice in Decoverslipping Microscopic Slides: A Novel Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Histopathological slides play a pivotal role in diagnostic pathology; however, over time, preserved slides may exhibit fading of staining quality, thereby diminishing their diagnostic and research value. Histopathological laboratories perform coverslip removal techniques to enable restaining of histopathological slides. Conventionally, xylene is used for coverslip removal; however, it is a time-consuming process. To tackle this, dry ice, a widely accessible and cost-effective cooling agent with a low freezing point (-78.5°C), was used for coverslip removal and compared with conve

Nutrition for Elite Male Ice Hockey: Evidence-Based Recommendations.

Ice hockey is a high-intensity intermittent team sport where games of 3 × 20-min periods involve on-ice shifts (typically lasting ∼30-80 s) interspersed with passive recovery periods (2-5 min). Playing requires endurance, speed, strength, and balance in conjunction with technical, tactical, and cognitive abilities. Nutrition can play a valuable role in optimizing physical and mental performance and in maintaining overall health of ice hockey players. The aim of this review is to provide evidence-based nutrition guidelines for elite male ice hockey players. The energy demands during training se

Control of ice thickness in cryo-EM via confinement.

Achieving thin ice with optimal thickness is a prerequisite for successful cryo-EM analysis of embedded macromolecules. Despite decades of effort, precise control of ice thickness in cryo-EM remains a major challenge. Here we reveal that the intrinsic instability of sub-100-nm liquid film, a previously overlooked determinant before vitrification, plays a critical role in controlling ice thickness. We found that well-designed graphene reservoirs can confine liquid film to an optimal thickness and overcome the limitations posed by liquid film instability, achieving precise control of ice thickne

Psychrophilic Bacteria and Enzyme Activity in Antarctic Ice Environments.

Psychrophilic organisms exhibit many adaptation mechanisms that enable them to survive at low temperatures ranging from -20 to 20 °C. Among other characteristics, these organisms produce cold-active enzymes with considerable biotechnological potential. The purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize bacteria from ice core samples collected on Horseshoe, Hovgaard, and Nansen Islands. Microorganisms from the latter two locations have been investigated only to a limited extent to date. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA nucleotide sequences, eight bacterial isolates, includi

Preparticipation screening in young female elite ice hockey players.

OBJECTIVES: The occurrence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in competitive athletes has led to a discussion about appropriate preparticipation screening models. The role of an electrocardiogram (ECG) in routine testing remains controversial in current guidelines. Furthermore, data on cardiac findings and the prognostic utility of screening strategies in young female elite ice hockey is scarce. METHODS: Female elite ice hockey players were enrolled in the open prospective "General Evaluation Program for Arrhythmia-Related Death in Athletes" (GEPARD) registry from 2008 to 2018. A staged prepartici

Duration of Ice Hockey Play and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative tauopathy associated with repetitive head impacts (RHIs). Prior research suggests a dose-response association between American football play duration and CTE risk and severity, but this association has not been studied for ice hockey. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations of duration of ice hockey play with CTE diagnosis and severity, functional status, and dementia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among male brain donors in the Understanding Neurological Injury and Traumati

Pollen Emissions of Subpollen Particles and Ice Nucleating Particles.

Pollen grains significantly contribute to the aerosol population, and levels are predicted to increase in the future. Under humid atmospheric conditions, pollen grains can rupture creating pollen grain fragments referred to as subpollen particles (SPPs) which are dispersed into the atmosphere with wind. In this laboratory study, SPP emission factors were determined for ryegrass, Lolium sp., and giant ragweed,Ambrosia trifida, in terms of the number of SPPs produced per pollen grain and the number of SPPs produced per m2, which were compared to previously measured live oak,Quercus virginiana, e

Predictive model of ice adhesion on non-elastomeric materials.

HYPOTHESIS: When ice accumulates on a surface, it can adversely impact functionality and safety of a platform in infrastructure, transportation, and energy sectors. Despite several attempts to model the ice adhesion strength on ice-shedding materials, none have been able to justify variation in the ice adhesion strength measured by various laboratories on a simple bare substrate. This is primarily due to the fact that the effect of underlying substrate of an ice-shedding material has been entirely neglected. EXPERIMENTS: Here, we establish a comprehensive predictive model for ice adhesion usi

Fracture-controlled surfaces as extremely durable ice-shedding materials.

Icing imposes a significant burden on those living in cold climates, with negative impacts on infrastructure, transportation, and energy systems. Over the past few decades, a wide range of materials with ice-shedding characteristics have been developed, including surfaces that are non-wetting/hydrophobic, liquid-infused, stress-localized, and those with low interfacial toughness. Although many of these materials have demonstrated low ice adhesion in a laboratory setting, none have achieved widespread practical adoption. This is primarily a result of the fact that they tend to have very low dur

Dry ice in the eye: A rare occupational hazard!

Superficial corneal foreign bodies (FBs) are a common occupational ocular hazard and can cause visually important astigmatism. A 23-year-old male working in a factory, which produced dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), presented to our emergency unit with symptoms of whitish discolouration of the right cornea for 1 day. Visual acuity in both eyes was 20/20 and slit-lamp examination of the right eye revealed an irregularly shaped whitish superficial FB in the inferior paracentral cornea with surrounding superior nebular opacity. Its gentle removal with a moistened cotton bud revealed an underlying

Thermally induced magnetic relaxation in square artificial spin ice.

The properties of natural and artificial assemblies of interacting elements, ranging from Quarks to Galaxies, are at the heart of Physics. The collective response and dynamics of such assemblies are dictated by the intrinsic dynamical properties of the building blocks, the nature of their interactions and topological constraints. Here we report on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization of artificial assemblies of mesoscopic spins. In our model nano-magnetic system - square artificial spin ice - we are able to control the geometrical arrangement and interaction strength between the magnet

Brain contusion with aphasia following an ice hockey injury.

Head injuries are relatively common in ice hockey, with the majority represented by concussions, a form of mild traumatic brain injury. More severe head injuries are rare since the implementation of mandatory helmet use in the 1960s. We present a case of a 27 year-old male who sustained a traumatic intraparenchymal hemorrhage with an associated subdural hematoma resulting after being struck by a puck shot at high velocity. The patient presented with expressive aphasia, with no other apparent neurologic deficits. Acutely, he was successfully treated with observation and serial neuroimaging stud

The Hip in Ice Hockey: A Current Concepts Review.

Ice hockey is a fast, physical sport with unique associated biomechanical demands often placing the hip in forced and repetitive supraphysiological ranges of motion. Ice hockey players commonly endure and are sidelined by nebulous groin injury or hip pain. Underlying causes can be chronic or acute and extra-articular, intra-articular, or "hip-mimicking." This article serves to review common hip-related injuries in ice hockey. For each, we define the particular condition; comment on risk factors and preventive strategies; discuss key historical, physical examination, and imaging findings; and f

Usefulness of ice water test to unmask detrusor overactivity.

PURPOSE: Ice Water Test (IWT) is not frequently used today. IWT triggers a non-inhibited involuntary detrusor contraction (NIDC) when the bladder is being filled with cold saline solution. NIDC is unmasked via a segmental reflex loop different from the physiological micturition reflex. Our purpose was to search for usefulness of IWT to expose detrusor overactivity (DO). METHODS: One hundred and seventy-nine IWT performed in patients with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) and conventional cystometry (CC) non-contributive to diagnosis were retrospectively analyzed. An increase of detrusor press

Total and methylated mercury in Arctic multiyear sea ice.

Mercury is one of the primary contaminants of concern in the Arctic marine ecosystem. While considerable efforts have been directed toward understanding mercury cycling in the Arctic, little is known about mercury dynamics within Arctic multiyear sea ice, which is being rapidly replaced with first-year ice. Here we report the first study on the distribution and potential methylation of mercury in Arctic multiyear sea ice. Based on three multiyear ice cores taken from the eastern Beaufort Sea and McClure Strait, total mercury concentrations ranged from 0.65 to 60.8 pM in bulk ice, with the high
