Incidence and prevalence of multiple system atrophy: a nationwide study in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by autonomic dysfunction with parkinsonism (MSAp) or cerebellar (MSAc) symptoms. At autopsy, α-synuclein inclusions in glial cells of the brain are needed to confirm a definite diagnosis. We determined the 10 year incidence of MSA, point prevalence and survival in a well defined population with a high number of neurologists. METHODS: Cases were identified from the only neurology department and all practising neurologists in Iceland, over a 10 year period. The diagnosis of MSA was in accordance with the Sec

Trichinella nativa in Iceland: an example of Trichinella dispersion in a frigid zone.

In most Arctic and subarctic regions, Trichinella nativa is a common zoonotic pathogen circulating among wild carnivores. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is one of the most important reservoirs for T. nativa in frigid zones. In Iceland, Trichinella infection has never been detected in the local wildlife, despite the presence of one of the host species, the arctic fox (Alopex lagopus). In 2008, one of two polar bears that had swum to Iceland's coast was found to have been infected with Trichinella sp. (8.5 larvae/g in the tongue, 6.8 larvae/g in the masseter and 4.4 larvae/g in the diaphragm);

[The frequency of some factors in pregnancy and delivery for Icelandic children with ADHD].

OBJECTIVE: ADHD is a well known psychiatric disorder that begins in childhood and frequently persists into adulthood. In the last decade numerous studies have shown the importance of genetic factors in the etiology of ADHD. However other etiological factors seem to be involved. The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of some possible etiological factors for ADHD in Icelandic children diagnosed with ADHD. The study is descriptive. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were 196 children referred for suspected ADHD to the outpatient unit of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psy

Genetics of psoriasis in Iceland: evidence for linkage of subphenotypes to distinct Loci.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with overlapping subphenotypes. It has a strong complex genetic component, but has been problematic to identifying significant loci. We evaluated 1000 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and documented several subphenotypes. Here we report results of genome-wide linkage scans for psoriasis genes in 238 Icelandic families with 874 patients. MHC linkage was confirmed with LOD score of 10.9. When the entire cohort was analyzed, two other loci with LOD scores of 2.5 and 1.5 were observed on 16q and 4q, respectively. Stratification into subphenoty

Segregation analysis of 389 Icelandic pedigrees with Breast and prostate cancer.

Breast cancer and prostate cancer are the most commonly occurring cancers in females and males, respectively. The objective of this project was to test the hypothesis that breast cancer in females and prostate cancer in males represent homologous cancers that may be controlled by one or more common unidentified genes that may explain some of the observed familial aggregation. We modeled the transmission of a breast-prostate cancer phenotype in 389 pedigrees ascertained through a breast cancer proband drawn from the Icelandic Cancer Registry. Assuming that age at diagnosis of this combined phen

Listeriosis in Iceland, 1978-2000: a description of cases and molecular epidemiology.

The purpose of our study was to review all cases of listeriosis in Iceland during the period 1978-2000 and to analyse the genetic relatedness of their isolates. Case records of all patients in Iceland with listeriosis during the period were reviewed and the isolates compared using serotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using SmaI, AseI and ApaI restriction enzymes. Forty cases of listeriosis were diagnosed during the period, resulting in a mean annual incidence of 6.9 cases per million and a case fatality rate of 33%. In the first 5 y of the study only serotype 4b was observed;

[The current concept of primary IgA deficiency and its prevalence in Iceland.].

IgA deficiency is among the most common primary immune deficiency known. Its prevalence, ranging from 1/324-1/1850, depends upon the study group geographic location and its ethnicity. IgA deficiency is commonly associated with other immune defects such as IgG2, and IgG4 deficiency. In addition, ataxia telangiectasia has been associated with IgA deficiency as well. The clinical significans of IgA deficiency is presently unclear. However, increased susceptibility to atopy, autoimmunity, infections and cancer has been reported. Furthermore, majority of these diseases are bound to the mucosal surf

Enucleation and evisceration in Iceland 1964-1992. Study in a defined population.

A retrospective study showed that from 1963-1992 200 eyes were enucleated or eviscerated in Iceland. The mean annual age-adjusted incidence per 100,000 population was 2.66, 50% higher for males than females. The mean annual age- and gender-adjusted incidence has decreased; was highest 3.58 per 100,000 for the period 1971-1978, but was 1.76 per 100,000 for the period 1985-1991. The indications were 1) Blind painful eye (92 eyes), 2) Suspicion of malignant neoplasm (49 eyes), 3) Acute trauma (35 eyes), 4) Corneal ulcer (17 eyes), 5) Other (7 eyes). Of blind painful eyes only 12 (6%) were due to

Microbiological quality of Icelandic cooked-peeled shrimp (Pandalus borealis).

Iceland is a major producer of cold water shrimp, Pandalus borealis. In recent years considerable attention has been given to improve hygiene in the factories producing cooked, peeled and frozen shrimp. To keep track of the bacteriological status of the end product, shrimp from most of the factories is routinely analysed bacteriologically by the request of shrimp exporters. This paper reports on the results of a bacteriological analysis of 7913 samples of shrimp from 26 Icelandic factories over a 6-year period. The results showed that the geometric mean of APC (at 35 degrees C) was 1718 per g

Mortality associated with renal and intestinal coccidiosis in juvenile eiders in Iceland.

The cause of unusual mortality observed in late June 1993 among hundreds of eider-ducklings (Somateria mollissima) originating from a colony of approximately 600 breeding eider ducks at Bildudalur, West-Iceland, was studied. The mortality occurred two weeks after a large-scale washing of gravel was initiated in a river-bed close to the colony. As a consequence marked environmental changes occurred in the area when a mud-layer gradually accumulated on the sea-bed around the colony. Necropsies, bacteriological, histoparasitological and pathological examinations were carried out on 14 ducklings.

Emergence of primary teeth and onset of dental stages in Icelandic children.

This study was undertaken to elucidate the mean ages at emergence of primary teeth and at the onset of dental stages DS 01 and DS 02 in Icelandic children. The material comprised 927 children (498 boys and 429 girls) aged 0-83 months who were presented for regular examinations in two Health Centers and children in three kindergartens in Reykjavík. Comparison of the mean ages at emergence of primary teeth in Icelandic, Finnish, Swedish, US, and Hungarian children disclosed a significantly earlier emergence in the Icelandic children, except that in Finnish children it was similar.

Outcome of sub-total thyroidectomy for thyrotoxicosis in Iceland and Northeast Scotland.

A comparative study of the outcome of surgical treatment for thyrotoxicosis was carried out in two countries with dissimilar dietary iodine levels. In the area with a high iodine level (Iceland) the prevalence of post-operative hypothyroidism was five times lower, but recurrent hyperthyroidism was five times higher, than in the area with lower iodine levels (northeast Scotland). The total morbidity reached comparable levels in the two samples. The prevalence of positive thyroid antibody tests and serum thyrotrophin levels was lower and the functional capacity of the thyroid remnant higher in t

[Visual field loss in eyes undergoing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery in Iceland].

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is a degenerative disease of the optic nerve and is marked by visual field defects (VFD). The only approved treatment is IOP lowering, either with eye drops, laser or surgery. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has become an appealing treatment modality, offering IOP lowering effect without the complication rates of trabeculectomy or the patient adherence required for pharmacologic therapy. In this study we aim to describe the severity of VFD in patients undergoing their first MIGS surgery. METHODS: Retrospective study reviewing the medical records of all patien
