Editorial: Immersive media in connected health-volume II.

Immersive media, particularly Extended Reality (XR), is at the forefront of revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Healthcare provides XR with "silver bullet" use cases that add value and societal effect to the technology. Healthcare interventions frequently require imaging or visualization to be applied correctly, and the sensation of presence that XR can provide is crucial as a training aid for healthcare learners. From anatomy to surgical training, multimodal immersion in the reality of a medical situation increases the impact of an XR resource compared to the usual approach. Thus, health

Cold-induced vasodilation during sequential immersions of the hand.

A common practice for those operating in cold environments includes repetitive glove doffing and donning to perform specific tasks, which creates a repetitive cycle of hand cooling and rewarming. This study aimed to determine the influence of intraday repeated hand cooling on cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD), sympathetic activation, and finger/hand temperature recovery. Eight males and two females (mean ± SD age: 28 ± 5 year; height: 181 ± 9 cm; weight: 79.9 ± 10.4 kg) performed two 30-min hand immersions in cold (4.3 ± 0.92 °C) water in an indoor environment (18 °C). Both immersions (Imm1; Im

Immersive Virtual Reality Exposures for the Treatment of Childhood Anxiety.

Exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy and is recommended as a front-line treatment for childhood anxiety. Unfortunately, challenges exist that impact the effective implementation of exposure-based CBT in clinical practice. One of the primary challenges is the accessibility and availability of exposure stimuli (e.g., spiders, storms, heights) in CBT sessions. Immersive virtual reality (VR) has shown promise as a scalable and sustainable solution to address this clinical need, but remains largely untested in youth with anxiety disorders. Here, we examine the u

Immersive Technology for Cognitive-Motor Training in Parkinson's Disease.

UNLABELLED: Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease in which the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons (DA) leads to initially sporadic and eventually widespread damage of the nervous system resulting in significant musculoskeletal and cognitive deterioration. Loss of motor function alongside increasing cognitive impairment is part of the natural disease progression. Gait is often considered an automatic activity; however, walking is the result of a delicate balance of multiple systems which maintain the body's center of mass over an ever-changing base of support

Exploration of Immersive Virtual Reality in Teaching Veterinary Orthopedics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed the use of novel teaching modalities to enhance the provision of remote veterinary education. In this study, we describe the use of immersive virtual reality (iVR) as a teaching aid for veterinary medicine students during their orthopedics clinical rotation. Student sentiments were assessed using voluntary electronic surveys taken by veterinary students before and after the rotation. The most noteworthy benefits students reported were improved engagement with the course content, information retention, radiographic interpretation, and clinical reasoning skill

Effect of viewing mode on pathfinding in immersive Virtual Reality.

The use of Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) to view Virtual Reality Environments (VREs) has received much attention recently. This paper reports on the difference between actual humans' navigation in a VRE viewed through an HMD compared to that in the same VRE viewed on a laptop PC display. A novel Virtual Reality (VR) Navigation input device (VRNChair), designed by our team, was paired with an Oculus Rift DK2 Head-Mounted Display (HMD). People used the VRNChair to navigate a VRE, and we analyzed their navigational trajectories with and without the HMD to investigate plausible differences in perfo

Treatment of acrophobia in virtual reality: the role of immersion and presence.

In this study the effects of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) were investigated in patients with acrophobia. Feelings of presence in VRET were systematically varied by using either a head-mounted display (HMD) (low presence) or a computer automatic virtual environment (CAVE) (high presence). VRET in general was found to be more effective than no treatment. No differences were found in effectiveness between VRET using an HMD or CAVE. Results were maintained at 6 months follow-up. Results of VRET were comparable with those of exposure in vivo (Cyberpsychology and Behavior 4 (2001) 335). I

Influence of temperature on irritation in the hand/forearm immersion test.

As indicated by in vitro experiments the penetration of irritants through the skin is significantly influenced by the temperature of the solution. In vivo experiments, demonstrated equally a significant influence of temperature in surfactant-induced skin irritation. In order to evaluate the irritant potential of detergent solutions under normal user conditions, we used the hand/forearm immersion test. We compared 2 detergents with different anionic character in a repetitive immersion protocol (30 min immersion on 4 consecutive days). The solutions were tested at 2 temperatures (37 degrees C an

Respiratory and other responses in subjects immersed in cold water.

Subjects have been immersed in water at 27 degrees C and 10 degrees C and while immersed their respiratory rates, minute volumes, and end-tidal PCO2 levels were measured. Measurements were made with the subjects at rest, exercising at approximately 0.8 liter oxygen-min-1, and very vigorously at 1.8-2.0 liters oxygen-min-1. Immersion in the cold water caused an increase in respiratory rate and a fall in end-tidal PCO2. At the moderate rate of exercise the hyperventilation persisted in relation to the oxygen demand and there was still a significant reduction in end-tidal PCO2. At the greatest ra

A Comparison of Immersive vs. Non-Immersive Virtual Reality Exercises for the Upper Limb: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Pilot Study with Healthy Participants.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) allows for a reliable assessment of oxygenated blood flow in relevant brain regions. Recent advancements in immersive virtual reality (VR)-based technology have generated many new possibilities for its application, such as in stroke rehabilitation. In this study, we asked whether there is a difference in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) within brain motor areas during hand/arm movements between immersive and non-immersive VR settings. Ten healthy young participants (24.3 ± 3.7, three females) were tested using a specially developed VR paradigm, called

Cold-Water Immersion Does Not Improve Running Performance During Intensified Training.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether daily post-exercise cold-water immersion (CWI) preserves high-intensity running performance and modulates physiological and perceptual stress responses during an eleven-day intensified training period with limited recovery. Seventeen recreational male runners completed an eleven-day program comprising two five-day blocks separated by one rest day. Each session included 30 min of continuous running, one self-regulated maximal 300 m bout, and ten 300 m high-intensity intervals. Participants were assigned to CWI (10 °C for 15 min post-exercise) or

Early immersion and primary care careers: evidence from a preclerkship rotation.

PURPOSE: The United States is facing a primary care workforce crisis that is affecting the overall health of the population. The University of Washington School of Medicine's Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP) is a 4-week primary care preclerkship rotation. This study examined whether early and immersive exposure to primary care is independently associated with a career choice in primary care overall and family medicine as a distinct specialty. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study included 2234 students who matriculated at the University of Washington School of Medicine between

Clinical severity of immersion pulmonary edema: A 14-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Immersion pulmonary edema (IPE) is an increasingly recognized cause of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure associated with aquatic activities. Although determinants of IPE occurrence have been described, factors associated with severe initial clinical presentation remain poorly understood. RESEARCH QUESTION: What proportion of patients with IPE present with severe manifestations, and what clinical or exposure-related factors are associated with severity? METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all consecutive IPE cases managed at a French national hyperbaric referra

Cryo-iCLEM: Cryo correlative light and electron microscopy with immersion objectives.

Correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) is a powerful tool for investigating cellular structure and function at the molecular level. However, while electron microscopy is often performed to great advantage at cryogenic temperatures, this is not always the case for light microscopy. One key challenge is the lack of cryo-compatible immersion objectives. In recent years, multiple cryoimmersion light microscopy (cryo-iLM) approaches have been described, but these techniques have never been used in correlative approaches. Here we present a novel workflow for correlative cryoimmersion light

Long-term water immersion of dental composites based on bioactive glass.

This study investigated the effect of copper-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanospheres (Cu-MBGN) on water sorption, solubility and porosity of an experimental dental composite over 180 days of water immersion, comparing it to bioactive glass 45S5 (BG) or inert fillers. Composites contained 35wt% Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin (60/40), 55wt% silanised barium-glass fillers, and 10wt% of either Cu-MBGN (10-CuBG), 45S5 bioactive glass (10-BG), or inert silica nanofillers (10-Si). Both BG composites showed a higher mass increase during water immersion than inert control (10-Si) at all measured time points
