Destruction of peripheral nerve myelin (PNM) occurs as a consequence of a variety of pathologic conditions affecting the peripheral nervous system. In certain primary demyelinating neuropathies, several lines of evidence implicate complement in the pathogenesis of demyelination. Fourteen protein antigens were identified on SDS-PAGE of Afipia felis culture supernatant. This study tested the hypothesis that in vitro cleavage of C3 could be triggered with similar case in serum samples from patients with adult periodontitis (n = 26) as in samples from periodontally healthy subjects (n = 13). Techniques have been studied which distinguish two variants of human alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) on the basis of characteristics of the carbohydrate moiety of this glycoprotein. AFP in serum samples from six children with tumors of yolk sac origin showed little concanavalin-A (Con A) binding. We investigated the effect of UV light (320-460 nm) on total hemolytic CH50 activity and C3 cleavage in sera obtained from 14 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda. Immunoaffinity-purified Ku protein was used to screen sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, myositis and Sjögren's syndrome for anti-Ku antibodies in a quantitative immunoblot assay. The protein C level was determined, on cord blood, for 30 healthy newborns by electro-immuno assay using a monospecific antiserum. For the newborns the mean level of protein C related antigen is about one third of normal adults' mean level. Fimbrial proteins were extracted from 15 isolates of Moraxella bovis, and antisera to each of the preparations were raised in rabbits. The antigenic relationships of the fimbriae were investigated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, tandem crossed immunoelectrophoresis, and a slide agglutination test. With all three methods there was a similar pattern of antigenic cross-reactivity among the fimbriae.
