Purpose Incarcerated women have a disproportionate burden of infectious and chronic disease, in addition to substance use disorder and mental health illness, when compared to the general population ( Binswanger et al., 2009 ; Fazel et al., 2006 ; Fuentes, 2013; Kouyoumdjian et al., 2012 ). Women often enter the correctional system in poor health, making incarceration an opportunity to address health issues. The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers to accessing health services that female inmates face during incarceration, the consequences to their health, and implications for corre

Female inmates have multiple challenges during incarceration and as they transition into the community including: barriers to accessing health care within correctional facilities, poor transitional preparation preceding release, and inadequate continuity of health care after release. This qualitative study explored the health-seeking experiences and the health and housing needs of female inmates. Four focus groups were conducted in a remand facility in Canada. Women described poor health at entry to the correctional system and viewed incarceration as a means to access health care services. Tra

BACKGROUND: Incarceration is simultaneously a public health opportunity and a public health concern. We examined the association between maternal/partner incarceration in the year prior to birth and perinatal smoking.
METHODS: We pooled 2006-2010 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring System. Controlling for age, race/ethnicity, education, marital status and other stressors, we assessed prevalence and heaviness of perinatal smoking.
FINDINGS: Women who reported incarceration of themselves or their partners in the year prior to deli

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate vitreous incarceration at the injection site using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) after intravitreal injection of ranibizumab.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 39 eyes of 34 patients who underwent intravitreal injection of 0.05 mL of ranibizumab. UBM (HiScan; Optikon, Rome, Italy) with a 50 MHz probe was performed 1 day after surgery to determine the existence of vitreous incarceration at the injection site.
RESULTS: The mean patient age was 59.7 (± 10.1) years, and 58.9% were female. Vitreous incarceration into the pars

OBJECTIVES: Past research has identified risk factors associated with incarceration among adult Aboriginal populations; however, less is known about incarceration among street-involved Aboriginal youth. Therefore, we undertook this study to longitudinally investigate recent reports of incarceration among a prospective cohort of street-involved youth in Vancouver, Canada.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Data were collected from a cohort of street-involved, drug-using youth from September 2005 to May 2013. Multivariate generalized estimating equation analyses were employed to

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular incarceration of the epicondylar fragment occurs in 5-18 % of all cases of medial epicondyle fracture. It requires stable fixation to allow early motion, since elbow stiffness is the most common complication following medial epicondyle fracture. In this retrospective study, we report the clinical and functional outcomes and the complications that occurred following open reduction and screw fixation of medial epicondyle fractures with intra-articular fragment incarceration.
METHODS: Thirteen children who had a fracture of the medial epicondyle with incarceration of

We show the sonographic and magnetic resonance imaging features of uterine incarceration. Clinical data and imaging findings were retrospectively reviewed for 8 confirmed cases identified by sonography from 2000 to 2010. Two patients had magnetic resonance imaging. Seven of 8 patients (87.5%) presented with abdominal pain; 4 of 8 (50.0%) also had urinary symptoms. All had a retroverted uterus with an elongated anterosuperiorly displaced or poorly visualized cervix on sonography. Magnetic resonance imaging showed similar features, but in both cases, the placental position was misinterpreted bec

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients dually infected with HIV and tuberculosis (TB) in Guyana.
METHODS: The data for this study were obtained as part of a related project conducted to determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus among TB patients in Guyana. From April to June 2006, a convenience sample of 100 patients was selected from those attending three TB clinics in Guyana and a structured questionnaire was used to collect relevant sociodemographic and risk factor data. The sociodemographic and clinical dat

A bitch was presented for a vaginal prolapse of five years' duration. The prolapse was confirmed by physical examination and evaluated by contrast radiography. Herniation of the uterine body, urinary bladder, and distal aspect of the colon was identified within the prolapse. The prolapse was reduced surgically, and an ovariohysterectomy, cystopexy, and colopexy were performed. Compared to other vaginal disorders, vaginal prolapse is an uncommon condition in the bitch. The secondary involvement of abdominal viscera appears to be exceptionally rare.

OBJECTIVE: Anger and depression are associated with a number of psychosocial problems, and their comorbidity may exacerbate maladjustment among incarcerated youth. The present study aims to identify whether anger and its different facets (cognitive, arousal, and behavioral), either independently or when conjoined with depressed mood, affects violent and nonviolent institutional infractions.
METHOD: Male adolescents (14-17 years of age) were recruited within 48 hr of arrival at a juvenile detention facility and were administered psychometric measures of anger (Novaco Anger Scale) and depressio

Black men who have been incarcerated experience worse mental health outcomes than Black men without incarceration histories, reflecting both the trauma of incarceration and barriers to adequate care. This study describes the perspectives and experiences of formerly incarcerated Black men (FIBM) with mental health treatment before, during, and after incarceration. Using a qualitative design with semistructured interviews and embedded quantitative surveys, we interviewed 29 FIBM. Quantitative data described the sample and treatment histories, while qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive

INTRODUCTION: Functional limitations are a key indicator of ageing, associated with quality of life, independence and the need for caregiving and long-term support. Research shows that formerly incarcerated older adults have more functional limitations than those who have never been incarcerated, yet there is a lack of research on prior incarceration and changes in functional limitations over time.
METHODS: Data come from 8377 adults aged ≥55 who participated in the Health and Retirement Study and were followed biennially from 2012 to 2022. Self-reported functional limitations were measured a

BACKGROUND: Some preceding researches have observed that certain neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, may affect breast cancer risk. However, whether there are causal relationships between these neurological conditions and breast cancer is inconclusive. This study was designed to explore whether neurological disorders affected the risks of breast cancer overall and of the two subtypes (ER+ and ER-).
METHODS: In the course of this study, genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for nine neurological diseases (Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Park

Patients who are incarcerated experience severely restricted autonomy and are thus extremely vulnerable. This commentary on a case offers longitudinal, long-term postsurgical trauma-informed care recommendations and starts with a working assumption that, when injuries sustained during incarceration require surgery and hospitalization, patients' rights to evidence-based standard of care that would be given to any other patient should not be compromised. Yet surgical care of traumatically injured patients who are incarcerated can be ethically and clinically complex due to their status as wards o

BACKGROUND: People who experience incarceration often have complex healthcare needs and poorer health than the general population. Australia has the eighth-largest custodial population in the Western Pacific. Understanding the breadth and quality of research on this population's health is crucial for advancing health equity both in Australia and across the region. This scoping review synthesised health research involving people in contact with the criminal justice system in Australia.
METHODS: We searched eight databases for primary, peer-reviewed research reporting on the health of people in
