Effect of Home-Based Complementary Food Fortification on Prevalence of Anemia Among Infants and Young Children Aged 6 to 23 Months in Poor Rural Regions of China.

Following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the Chinese government instituted an infant and young and child nutrition program that included promotion of in-home fortification of complementary food with ying yang bao (YYB), a soy-based powder containing iron, 2.5 mg as iron-EDTA and 5 mg as ferrous fumarate, and other micronutrients. Ying yang bao was provided to participating families in 8 poor rural counties in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces by the Ministry of Health. We assessed hemoglobin levels among infants and young children (IYC) aged 6 to 23 months at baseline in May 2010 (n = 1290)

Association Between the Number of US Food and Drug Administration-Warned Anesthetic Exposures and Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient at Age 3 Years in Very Preterm Infants.

OBJECTIVE: In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that general anesthetics and sedative agents in children younger than 3 years may impair neurodevelopment. Very preterm infants could be especially vulnerable because of brain immaturity. We examined the association between the number of US FDA-warned anesthetic and sedative agents and full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) at age 3 years in infants born < 29 weeks' gestational age (GA). STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective study, all infants born (< 29 weeks' gestation) between January 2006 and December 2012 were evaluated

Daily egg intake may reduce sensitisation to common allergenic foods among six- to nine-month-old south African infants: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate sensitization to eggs and other common allergenic foods, allergic symptoms, and fatty acid status among infants after introducing daily eggs as a complementary food for 6 months. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from a randomized controlled trial of 500 infants aged 6-9 months in Jouberton, South Africa, who were randomly assigned to receive one egg daily, n = 250 (treatment) or no egg, n = 250 (control) for 6 months. Clinical allergy symptoms were assessed with the Childhood Allergy and Immunology Research questionnaire. Infants were test

Salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of tetracycline residues in infant foods.

The use of salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) has been evaluated for the determination of tetracyclines in infant foods based on meat and vegetables or in milk. To obtain satisfactory extraction efficiencies for the studied analytes, several parameters affecting the SALLE procedure were optimized. Analytical performances of the method were satisfactory, obtaining limits of quantification lower than 0.48μgkg-1 in all cases. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation

Effects of early nutritional interventions on the development of atopic disease in infants and children: the role of maternal dietary restriction, breastfeeding, timing of introduction of complementary foods, and hydrolyzed formulas.

This clinical report reviews the nutritional options during pregnancy, lactation, and the first year of life that may affect the development of atopic disease (atopic dermatitis, asthma, food allergy) in early life. It replaces an earlier policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics that addressed the use of hypoallergenic infant formulas and included provisional recommendations for dietary management for the prevention of atopic disease. The documented benefits of nutritional intervention that may prevent or delay the onset of atopic disease are largely limited to infants at high

Complementary Foods and Milk-Based Formulas Provide Excess Protein but Suboptimal Key Micronutrients and Essential Fatty Acids in the Intakes of Infants and Toddlers from Urban Settings in Malaysia.

This study determined the intakes of complementary foods (CFs) and milk-based formulas (MFs) by a total of 119 subjects aged 6-23.9 months from urban day care centers. Dietary intakes were assessed using two-day weighed food records. Intake adequacy of energy and nutrients was compared to the Recommended Nutrient Intakes (RNI) for Malaysia. The most commonly consumed CFs were cereals (rice, noodles, bread). The subjects derived approximately half of their energy requirements (kcals) from CFs (57 ± 35%) and MFs (56 ± 31%). Protein intake was in excess of their RNI requirements, from both CFs (1

The Effects of Early Nutritional Interventions on the Development of Atopic Disease in Infants and Children: The Role of Maternal Dietary Restriction, Breastfeeding, Hydrolyzed Formulas, and Timing of Introduction of Allergenic Complementary Foods.

This clinical report updates and replaces a 2008 clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which addressed the roles of maternal and early infant diet on the prevention of atopic disease, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and food allergy. As with the previous report, the available data still limit the ability to draw firm conclusions about various aspects of atopy prevention through early dietary interventions. Current evidence does not support a role for maternal dietary restrictions during pregnancy or lactation. Although there is evidence that exclusive breastfeeding for

Environmental food allergen levels in the homes of 3-4-month-old infants: findings from the second phase Chiba study of mother and child health (2nd C-MACH).

Pediatric food allergy is a growing health concern, with hen's egg, cow's milk, and wheat being the most common allergens in Japan. The dual allergen exposure hypothesis proposes that early oral intake induces immune tolerance but that cutaneous exposure may promote sensitization. However, little is known about environmental exposure to food allergens before the introduction of complementary foods. This study investigated the presence and concentration of food allergens in the home environments of 3- to 4-month-old infants who had not yet started complementary feeding. Dust samples were collec

PEBBLES study protocol: a randomised controlled trial to prevent atopic dermatitis, food allergy and sensitisation in infants with a family history of allergic disease using a skin barrier improvement strategy.

INTRODUCTION: The skin is an important barrier against environmental allergens, but infants have relatively impaired skin barrier function. There is evidence that impaired skin barrier function increases the risk of allergic sensitisation, atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy. We hypothesise that regular prophylactic use of emollients, particularly those that are designed to improve skin barrier structure and function, will help prevent these conditions. With the aim of determining if application of a ceramide-dominant emollient two times per day reduces the risk of AD and food allergy, we

An Oral Food Challenge Is Required for Accurate Diagnosis of Peanut Allergy in Infants Prior to Oral Immunotherapy: Evaluation of the Allergy Development to an Accelerated Pathway to Tolerance Peanut Oral Immunotherapy Program.

BACKGROUND: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) practices for food allergy vary globally. Whereas oral food challenges (OFCs) are not routinely performed before OIT, they can prevent unnecessary treatment. In 2024, the Allergy Development to an Accelerated Path to Tolerance (ADAPT) OIT program was established as the first nationally standardized model of care for treatment of peanut allergy. Threshold OFCs (TOFCs) were used to confirm peanut allergy and determine the OIT starting dose. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy and safety of this approach before starting OIT across the 10 ADAPT pub

Low infant negative emotionality buffers infants from family economic stress.

The present study examined the indirect association between family economic hardship and infant socioemotional competence and behavior problems via food insecurity, maternal depressive symptoms, and maternal sensitivity. The moderating role of infant temperament on these family stress processes was also examined. The sample included 299 mother-infant dyads followed at four time points from pregnancy until infants were 14 months old. Mothers reported demographics, household food insecurity, and depressive symptoms during the third trimester of pregnancy. At 2 months postpartum, mothers reported

Positive maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines attenuate the associations between infant appetitive traits and both infant milk intake and weight.

Appetitive traits influence food intake and weight gain throughout the life-course. Here, we investigated whether maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines could modify this association. Baseline data from 544 mother-infant formula-feeding dyads recruited to the Baby Milk Trial were included in this observational, cross-sectional analysis. Infant appetitive traits (food responsiveness and satiety responsiveness), maternal attitudes to following healthy infant feeding guidelines (self-efficacy, outcome-expectancy, intentions) and infant milk intakes were reported by moth

Maternal periconception food insecurity and postpartum parenting stress and bonding outcomes.

Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes for the mother and infant, but less is known about the role of periconception food insecurity and its links to maternal and child wellbeing in the postpartum period. In a sample of 115 diverse (41% white) and predominately low-income mothers, results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that periconception food insecurity was positively associated with parenting stress at 2 months postpartum. A negative association between food insecurity and maternal-infant bonding at 6 months postpartum was mediated

Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption and food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption (AE) is a distinct rash associated with profound zinc deficiency. It is seen in a variety of conditions but has not been reported as a presentation of food allergy. OBJECTIVE: To report AE as an unusual presentation of food allergy in infants. METHODS: Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption was diagnosed by a characteristic rash and a low serum zinc level. The diagnosis of food allergy was made by history, serum total IgE and food specific IgE levels, or oral challenge with suspected foods. RESULTS: Two infants with AE, diarrhea, an

Dysregulation and sleep in 12- to 18-month-olds with elevated behavior problems: The moderating role of material hardship.

Sleep problems, including longer sleep onset latency, frequent night wakings, and shorter nighttime sleep duration, are common during late infancy and are associated with elevated dysregulation, yet little is known about whether material hardship strengthens this association. The current study examined whether financial strain and food insecurity moderated associations between infant dysregulation and sleep outcomes in 200, 12- to 18-month-old infants with elevated behavior problems from a predominantly Hispanic/Latine sample. Caregivers completed measures of infant dysregulation, sleep, finan

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire and associations with infant weight, gender and feeding mode in an Australian sample.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the factor structure of the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ) in an Australian community sample of mother-infant dyads. A secondary aim was to explore the relationship between the BEBQ subscales and infant gender, weight and current feeding mode. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) utilising structural equation modelling examined the hypothesised four-factor model of the BEBQ. Only mothers (N=467) who completed all items on the BEBQ (infant age: M=17 weeks, SD= weeks) were included in the analysis. The original four-factor model did not provide an

[Unusual case of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome].

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome is a nonimmunoglobulin E mediated gastrointestinal food hypersensitivity that manifests as profuse, repetitive vomiting, pallor and hypotonia, often with diarrhea leading to severe dehydration and lethargy (sepsis-like symptoms) in the acute setting. An oral food challenge is sometimes performed to confirm the diagnosis and treatment consists of elimination of the food trigger(s) from the diet. We report a case of a 3-monthsold infant with several episodes of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome after taking infant formula milk with tolerance
