Caesarean section and infant formula feeding are associated with an earlier age of onset of multiple sclerosis.

Mode of delivery and lactation are among the earliest factors influencing gut microbiota composition and potentially MS risk, but their contribution to MS susceptibility has been controversial. We investigated whether these factors could influence age at MS onset (AAO) on 2055 RRMS patients (mean age 28.4 years). Patients born by means of a caesarean section (10.9%) had an earlier AAO than those born through natural delivery (-5.2 years, p < 0.001). Patients fed with infant formula had an earlier AAO compared to patients breastfed, particularly considering those breastfed for at least 6 months

Integrated Protein-Lipid Digestion Profiles of Human Milk, Infant Formulas, and Dairy Ingredients Under Infant In Vitro Digestion.

Human milk (HM) represents the physiological reference for infant digestion, whereas infant formulas (IFs) differ in protein composition and lipid architecture. This study compared the gastric and intestinal digestion of HM, five commercial IFs, whole milk powder (WMP), and protein ingredients using a standardized infant in vitro model. Protein hydrolysis was assessed through digestibility and residual subunit patterns, and lipid digestion was evaluated through free fatty acid release and fatty acid profiling. Gastric digestion revealed pronounced differences driven by intrinsic structure and

[Use of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in non-dairy formulas. I. Chemical composition and nutritive quality of chickpeas and a comparison with commercial infant formulas].

A study was carried out to determine, in rats, the chemical composition and protein quality determinations: PER, NPR and NPU of chick-pea, milk powder and two different commercial infant formulas for babies with lactose intolerance. The formulas studied were "Casec" (calcium caseinate), "Sobee" (soy flour), "Plenilac" (milk powder) and cooked chick-pea flour, alone or supplemented with methionine and/or tryptophan. The protein and fat contents of "Casec" were 88 and 2%, respectively, while chick-pea, "Sobee" and "Plenilac" exhibited 18.9 and 8%, 22 and 18%, 26 and 28%, respectively. The four p

Effects of an infant formula containing a whey protein concentrate on feeding tolerance and markers of intestinal immune defense in Chinese infants.

BACKGROUND: Human milk (HM) bioactive components can have immune modulatory functions, impact the gut microbiome, and may result in functional benefits when added to infant formula (IF). In this single-arm, prospective, intervention study, we tested the effectiveness of an IF with a whey protein concentrate co-enriched in α-lactalbumin, milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), and Sn-2 palmitate resulting in protein and lipid profiles observed in HM. The outcomes tested were feeding tolerance, Bifidobacteria abundance, and intestinal and immune health of Chinese infants. METHODS: Predominantly formu

Effects of lactose-containing vs lactose-free infant formula on postprandial superior mesenteric artery flow in term infants.

BACKGROUND: Dietary dextrose and fructose may promote vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. In certain infant populations, altered postprandial mesenteric hyperemia (PPH) may increase risk for feeding intolerance. OBJECTIVE: To compare superior mesenteric artery (SMA) PPH following feeds of lactose-containing (LC) formula vs lactose-free (LF; dextrose + sucrose) formula. METHODS: In a 2 × 2 crossover study with 6 term newborns, 3 received LC first followed by LF 3 hours later. The remaining 3 received the reverse order. Ultrasound measures of pre- and postprandial SMA flow, diam

Special Milk and Synthetic Biology: A Dual-Perspective Review of Ingredient Substitutions in Breast-Milk-Simulated Infant Formula.

Breast milk (BM) serves as the gold standard for infant nutrition, yet conventional cow's milk-based infant formulas (IF) fail to adequately replicate its structural and functional complexity. This review critically examines two complementary paradigms, specialty milk utilization and synthetic biology-enabled precision manufacturing, as transformative strategies for developing biomimetic IF ingredients. Specialty milks, including goat milk, camel milk, donkey milk, buffalo milk, and yak milk, exhibit compositional proximity to BM in specific dimensions, including digestibility, sn-2 fatty acid

Accurate determination of vitamin B12 in infant formula using isotope dilution-ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

A method for the accurate determination of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) in infant formula was developed using isotope dilution-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS). As an internal standard, a [13C7]-cyanocobalamin isotope-labeled analogue was used. Because of the hygroscopic property of cobalamins, the concentration of the cyanocobalamin standard solution was determined via quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) spectroscopy and further validated by capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection as an independent technique. The cobalamins contained in infant fo

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 1, Nutrient Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed, launched by the Food and Drug Administration in March 2025, represents a comprehensive initiative to update infant formula regulations that have remained largely unchanged since the 1980s. This expert panel review addresses recommendations for nutrients considering 4 decades of accumulated scientific evidence. Current Food and Drug Administration fatty acid regulations specify only total fat content and minimum linoleic acid requirements, despite substantial international consensus on polyunsaturated fatty acid specifications. Evidence strongly supports establishing maxi

Inactivation kinetics of Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enterica in reconstituted powdered infant formula and survival during subsequent storage.

Powdered infant formula (PIF) has been implicated as a potential vehicle for foodborne pathogens, such as Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enterica, which can cause life-threatening infections in infants. For high-risk infants, public health agencies recommend using hot water to reconstitute PIF for safety. This study evaluated the influence of reconstitution water temperature on pathogen inactivation and subsequent survival and growth during storage. Milk-based (MB) and soy-based (SB) PIF were inoculated with C. sakazakii or S. enterica via spray atomization and left to stabilize for 1 mo

Structured Triacylglycerol with Optimal Arachidonic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid Content for Infant Formula Development: A Bio-Accessibility Study.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are extremely important fatty acids for brain development in the fetus and early childhood. Premature infants face challenges obtaining these two fatty acids from their mothers. It has been reported that supplementation with triacylglycerols (TAGs) with an ARA:DHA (w/w) ratio of 2:1 may be optimal for preterm infants, as presented in commercial formulas such as Formulaid™. This study explored methods to produce TAGs with a 2:1 ratio (ARA:DHA), particularly at the more bioavailable sn-2 positi

Impact of formulation and home storage conditions on the content of furan and derivatives in powdered infant formula.

While autoxidation of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) is a potential source of furan and its derivatives, the regulatory obligation to enrich powdered infant formulae (PIF) with some of these compounds might raise safety issues. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of formulation and home storage conditions on the generation of furan and its derivatives in PIF. Furan, 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and 3-methylfuran (3-MF) were monitored by a validated SHS-GC-Q Exactive-Orbitrap MS method in six PIF formulated with high or low concentrations of different PUFAs (ALA, ARA, DHA), pro-oxi

Levels of organic pollutants and metals/metalloids in infant formula marketed in Brazil: Risks to early-life health.

Infant formula intake is recommended to ensure comprehensive nutritional and caloric fulfillment when exclusive breastfeeding is not possible. However, similarly to breast milk, infant formulas may also contain pollutants capable of inducing endocrine-disrupting and neurotoxic effects. Thus, considering the sensitivity of their developing physiological systems and that infants have heightened susceptibility to environmental influences, this study was aimed at assessing the contents of essential elements, and inorganic and organic pollutants in infant formulas marketed in Brazil. Additionally,

Development of a Cryptosporidium-arsenic multi-risk assessment model for infant formula prepared with tap water in France.

Tap water is used in France to reconstitute powder infant formula, although it is not sterile and possibly contaminated by microbiological and chemical hazards. The present study aims to quantify risks of using tap water in France for the preparation of infant formula, during the first six months of life. Cryptosporidium and arsenic were selected as hazards of greatest concern in microbiology and chemistry, respectively. A probabilistic model was developed using French (when available) and European (alternatively) data. Second order Monte Carlo simulation was used to separate uncertainty and v

Developing a Cas12a-based detection method on the emetic Bacillus cereus strains in infant formulas.

Emetic Bacillus cereus is a significant foodborne pathogen typically causing gastrointestinal disorders in adults, but the toxin production and antimicrobial resistance could lead to more severe or even fatal outcomes in infants. Given its emergence in infant foods and the high virulence potential, a rapid and sensitive detection of this significant microbial hazard is urgently required. Here, we developed a Cas12a-based detection method by targeting ces (cereulide toxin synthetase) and gyrB genes of the emetic Bacillus cereus strains. This method effectively differentiated the ces-carried Bac

SLAB51 Multi-Strain Probiotic Formula Increases Oxygenation in Oxygen-Treated Preterm Infants.

Preterm infants are at risk of hypoxia and hyperoxia because of the immaturity of their respiratory and antioxidant systems, linked to increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a single administration of the SLAB51 probiotic formula in improving oxygenation in respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)-affected premature babies, thus reducing their need for oxygen administration. Additionally, the capability of SLAB51 in activating the factor-erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) responsible for antioxidant responses was evaluated in vitro. In two groups of oxygen-tr
