BACKGROUND: Fetal and infant mortality rates have declined dramatically world-wide. On a scale of absolute risk, the declines are diminishing and perhaps even plateauing, raising concerns about public health progress.
METHODS: We use Norway's national Medical Birth Registry to describe rates of declining stillbirth and infant mortality from 1967 to 2025.
RESULTS: For nearly six decades, stillbirth mortality in Norway has declined at an annual rate of about 2.8%, and neonatal mortality has declined by 3.7% a year. Neither rate of decline shows signs of slowing. Postneonatal mortality (28 days

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between prenatal illicit substance exposure and infant mortality, addressing the unclear links between specific and multiple substances and increased mortality.
METHODS: This 16-year retrospective cohort study used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health dataset, and the Integrated Illegal Drug Database, including 1 937 301 pregnant women who delivered from 2004 to 2019. Among them, 11 477 used illicit drugs during pregnancy, with a matched control group of 45 908 non-users based on maternal age, inc

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether community factors that differentially affect the health of pregnant people contribute to geographic differences in infant mortality across the US.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study sought to characterize the association of a novel composite measure of county-level maternal structural vulnerabilities, the Maternal Vulnerability Index (MVI), with risk of infant death. We evaluated 11 456 232 singleton infants born at 22 0 of 7 through 44 6 of 7 weeks' gestation from 2012 to 2014. Using county-level MVI, which ranges from 0 to 100, multivariable mixed e

BACKGROUND: The exact timing, causes, and circumstances of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain poorly described, especially for antenatal stillbirths and deaths occurring at home. We aimed to provide reliable estimates of the incidence of stillbirth and neonatal death in three LMICs (Madagascar, Cambodia and Senegal) and to identify their main causes and associated risk factors.
METHODS: This study is based on data from an international, multicentric, prospective, longitudinal, community-based mother-infant cohort. We included pregnant mothers

Previous studies on the associations between cigarette taxes and infant survival have all been in high-income countries and did not examine the relative benefits of different taxation levels and structures. We evaluated longitudinal associations of cigarette taxes with neonatal and infant mortality globally. We applied country-level panel regressions using 2008-2018 annual mortality and biennial WHO tobacco taxation data. Complete data was available for 159 countries. Outcomes were neonatal and infant mortality. We conducted analyses by type of taxes (i.e. specific cigarette taxes, ad valorem

Background: We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to address the crucial public health issue of the suspected association between air pollution exposure during pregnancy and the risk of infant mortality. Methods: We searched on MEDLINE ® databases among articles published until February, 2019 for case-control, cohort, and ecological studies assessing the association between maternal exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) or Particular matter (PM) and the risk of infant mortality including infant, neonatal, and post-neonatal mortality for all-and specific-causes as well. Due to the increase in cases of microcephaly caused by Zika virus in Brazil, the Ministry of Health of Argentina recommends increasing surveillance of this malformation. In order to deepen the knowledge of the epidemiological behavior of microcephaly in the country, infant mortality by microcephaly is analyzed between 1998 and 2012. The data come from the Direction of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS). The infant mortality rate by microcephaly (IMR-M) was calculated by provinces and regions and a clustering analysis was performed at the departmental level. The highest rates were observe

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common factor complicating the care of the preterm infant, but controversy remains regarding the long term effects of PDA and iatrogenic closure of PDA.
METHODS: Studies presenting data relevant to the relationship between PDA and mortality and morbidity were identified via a systematic literature review. These studies were classified based on PDA exposure in the case and control groups. The data was abstracted and summarized using linear modeling, resulting in summary estimates of mean effect size (odds ratio).
RESULTS: Recently published data

Among all of the industrialized countries, the United States has the highest infant mortality rate. Racial and ethnic disparities continue to plague the United States with a disproportionally high rate of infant death. Furthermore, racial disparities among infant and neonatal mortality rates remain a chronic health problem in the United States. These risks are based on the geographical variations in mortality and disparities among differences in maternal risk characteristics, low birth weights, and lack of access to health care.

BACKGROUND: African American infants in San Francisco suffer a mortality rate two to three times higher than Whites, yet prior discussion groups with African American residents suggested they were unaware of this disparity.
METHODS: Social marketing techniques were used to develop and implement three campaigns to increase awareness. The campaign themes were (1) infant mortality disparities, (2) proper infant sleep position, and (3) taking action to reduce disparities. Mediums to carry messages included bus ads, radio ads, church fans, and posters and cards distributed at clinics, daycares, ag

In 2005, the United States ranked 30th in the world in infant mortality. Infant mortality rates for preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) infants are lower in the United States than in most European countries; however, infant mortality rates for infants born at 37 or more weeks of gestation are higher in the United States than in most European countries. One in 8 births in the United States were preterm in 2005, compared with 1 in 18 births in Ireland and Finland, and 1 in 16 in France and Sweden. If the United States had Sweden's distribution of births by gestational age, nearly 8,000 infant death

The 2008 annual report of the Regional Infant and Child Mortality Review Committee (RICMRC) is presented. This committee has as its mission the review of infant and child deaths so that information can be transformed into action to protect young lives. The 2008 review area includes South Dakota's Minnehaha, Turner, Lincoln, Moody, Lake, McCook, Union, Hansen, Miner and Brookings counties. Within our region in 2008, there were six infant deaths labeled as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID), of which two met the criteria for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The four non-SIDS SUID dea

Between 2001 and 2003, the authors studied pregnancy outcomes and infant mortality among 202 married women in West Bengal, India. Reproductive histories were ascertained using structured interviews. Arsenic exposure during each pregnancy, including all water sources used, was assessed; this involved measurements from 409 wells. Odds ratios for spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, neonatal mortality, and infant mortality were estimated with logistic regression based on the method of generalized estimating equations. Exposure to high concentrations of arsenic (> or =200 microg/liter) during pregnan

OBJECTIVES: Racial disparities in infant and maternal mortality have been attributed to the unique stresses faced by Black women in the United States, but the underlying pathophysiological pathways are poorly understood. This paper reviews the literature related to potential causes of racial disparities in infant and maternal mortality.
METHODS: A review of the literature from 1966 to 2003 was conducted using a series of searches of Medline, obstetrical journals, and bibliographies. The review focused on potential contributing pathophysiological factors to infant and maternal mortality.

The aim of the present study is to see if by conducting research on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), one of major contributing factors to infant mortality in Japan, infant mortality can be reduced. Concrete approaches taken in this study took four different directions: elucidation of SIDS etiology, prevention, elucidation of its social aspects (education) and the investigation of administrative aspects. At the same time, an attempt was made to get better grasp on the epidemiological trends in infant mortality, including that of SIDS. The idea behind this etiological approach was to unify h

Both maternal and infant death rates in the United States are much higher than in many developed countries. The interrelationships between abortions and maternal and infant mortality have been analyzed on the basis of data from the 1970s and 1980s. The legalization of abortions in 1973 resulted in a marked increase in legal abortions and marked reductions in maternal and infant mortality over the course of the 1970s. However, a wide variation in abortion rates and in the number of abortion facilities indicates that such facilities were not readily available to all segments of the population in
