Exploring the information needs of breast cancer patients and families in a large, urban, academic hospital: perceived barriers and facilitators to finding relevant and credible information.

PURPOSE: This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of breast cancer patients and caregivers in navigating cancer-related information. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 participants (13 patients, 3 caregivers), most of whom were female (n = 13), highly educated, and reported strong digital and health literacy. Participants' ages ranged from 36 to 71 (M = 52). The majority were navigating invasive breast cancer, with a smaller number diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. Interviews focused on participants' experiences with information acc

From Searching to Coping, How Chinese Patients With Breast Cancer Navigate Web-Based Health Information: Semistructured Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: With the development of digital health platforms, patients with breast cancer are increasingly relying on web-based resources to search for disease-related information. Proper usage of web-based health information by patients with breast cancer is crucial for understanding disease information and participating in treatment decisions. However, in the face of the large amount and complexity of information, it is still unclear how patients can make psychological adjustments and behavioral responses. Problems such as variable information quality and conflicting information are also aff

Cancer prognosis information-seeking among survivors and caregivers: findings from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service.

PURPOSE: Receiving prognostic information is a well-documented need for cancer survivors and caregivers. However, little is known about these two groups' prognosis information-seeking outside of discussions with healthcare providers. This study examined survivors' and caregivers' prognosis-related inquiries using data from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS). METHODS: Using an analytic sample of 81,154 survivors and caregivers, descriptive statistics explored differences between prognosis and non-prognosis inquiries made by each group over a 6-year period (Septemb

A descriptive study of the health information needs of Kenyan women in the first 6 weeks postpartum.

BACKGROUND: A large number of maternal and neonatal deaths occur during birth and 48 h after birth. The benefits of postnatal care to the mother and newborn cannot be overemphasized as this is another opportunity where complications that might arise from pregnancy and childbirth can be treated, as well as the time to provide important information on maternal and newborn care after delivery. This study aimed to determine the information needs of mother-baby pairs in the first 6 weeks after birth. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study using in-depth interviews at three points in time was co

Digital epidemiology reveals global childhood disease seasonality and the effects of immunization.

Public health surveillance systems are important for tracking disease dynamics. In recent years, social and real-time digital data sources have provided new means of studying disease transmission. Such affordable and accessible data have the potential to offer new insights into disease epidemiology at national and international scales. We used the extensive information repository Google Trends to examine the digital epidemiology of a common childhood disease, chicken pox, caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV), over an 11-y period. We (i) report robust seasonal information-seeking behavior for

Dissemination of Misinformative and Biased Information about Prostate Cancer on YouTube.

YouTube is a social media platform with more than 1 billion users and >600000 videos about prostate cancer. Two small studies examined the quality of prostate cancer videos on YouTube, but did not use validated instruments, examine user interactions, or characterize the spread of misinformation. We performed the largest, most comprehensive examination of prostate cancer information on YouTube to date, including the first 150 videos on screening and treatment. We used the validated DISCERN quality criteria for consumer health information and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool, and

Association between mental health literacy and formal help-seeking behaviors among students from the Palestinian-Arab minority in Israel.

Mental health problems are common among higher education students, yet formal help-seeking rates remain low. Mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial in facilitating help-seeking, but its relationship with formal help-seeking behaviors among ethnic minority students is poorly understood. This study explored MHL among Palestinian minority students in Israel using Jorm's framework, examining the association between each MHL dimension and formal help-seeking. It also investigated information-seeking methods and their relations to actual help-seeking. 129 Palestinian students completed measures of

AI Use for Mental Health Information and Professional Psychological Help-Seeking Intentions Among Saudi Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Mental health concerns remain a major public health challenge, while artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools are increasingly used to obtain mental health-related information. However, little is known about the relationship between AI use and professional psychological help-seeking intentions, particularly among Saudi women. This cross-sectional study examined this association among 134 Saudi women aged 18 years and older recruited through social media platforms. An online questionnaire assessed AI use for mental health information, confidence in AI-provided information, perceived barriers to

The associations between coping resources and help-seeking intention in a sample of Chinese first-year medical students: mediation effects of coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Help-seeking is an adaptive coping process encompassing orientation, intention and actual behaviors. Help-seeking intention which promotes help-seeking behavior is a protective factor for mental health. However, the psychological paths for help-seeking intention in first-year medical students, a population vulnerable to mental health challenges, remain elusive. Thus, we aim to explore the associations between coping resources (i.e., perceived social support (PSS) and self-compassion) and formal/informal help-seeking intention, and to further test the mediating role of coping strate

Where low-income seniors receive their heart health and diabetes information: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Older adults (> 55 years), in particular low-income older adults, have lower health literacy than the rest of the Canadian population. Lower health literacy is related to several negative health outcomes such as poor diabetes control and other physical and mental health problems. Canada's rising ageing population requires an age-friendly system that reduces the dependency on the Canadian health care system. This study investigated the Health Information Seeking Behaviour of low-income seniors living in social housing across five Ontario regions to determine how to improve healthcar

Vaccine-related internet search activity predicts H1N1 and HPV vaccine coverage: implications for vaccine acceptance.

The Internet is a primary source for health-related information, and Internet search activity is associated with infectious disease outbreaks. The authors hypothesized that Internet search activity for vaccine-related information would predict vaccination coverage. They examined Internet search activity for H1N1 and human papilloma virus (HPV) disease and vaccine information in relation to H1N1 and HPV vaccine uptake. Google Insight for Search was used to assess the volume of Internet search queries for H1N1- and vaccine-related terms in the United States in 2009, the year of the H1N1 pandemic

Factors Associated With Follow-Up Attendance After School Scoliosis Screening: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Follow-up evaluation after school scoliosis screening is essential for early detection and timely management. However, not all children recommended for further evaluation attend secondary screening. This pilot study aimed to explore parental factors associated with follow-up attendance after school scoliosis screening. Methodology This pilot cross-sectional study was conducted as an anonymous online questionnaire survey, distributed via a Quick Response (QR) code to parents or guardians of 31,407 schoolchildren who underwent school musculoskeletal screening in Miyazaki City, Japan.

Social media as a source of information for patients with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic, disabling condition without a definitive cure, and current management strategies prioritize symptom relief and slowing disease progression rather than addressing the underlying cause. Therefore, KOA patients turn to social media (SM) in the hope of finding a solution or a treatment to relieve their pain. The main goal of this study was to explore the prevalence of information sought by KOA patients on SM and to determine factors associated with its use. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adult patients followed in our rheumatology

Characteristics of health information gatherers, disseminators, and blockers within families at risk of hereditary cancer: implications for family health communication interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Given the importance of the dissemination of accurate family history to assess disease risk, we characterized the gatherers, disseminators, and blockers of health information within families at high genetic risk of cancer. METHODS: A total of 5466 personal network members of 183 female participants of the Breast Imaging Study from 124 families with known mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes (associated with high risk of breast, ovarian, and other types of cancer) were identified by using the Colored Eco-Genetic Relationship Map (CEGRM). Information-Seeking Patterns and Communication Preferences Among Japanese Survivors With Cancer: Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BackgroundWith increasing numbers of survivors with cancer, the importance of patient-centered information provision and communication to alleviate psychological burdens, such as anxiety and depression, is growing. However, substantial individual differences exist in patients with cancer information-seeking behaviors and use of support services, and few studies have comprehensively examined cognitive and psychological factors such as treatment status, sex, trust in information sources, and patient-provider relationships.ObjectiveThis study aimed to integrate the theory of planned behavior and

Information experiences among women diagnosed with endometrial cancer: a mixed methods study.

PURPOSE: Despite a growing population of endometrial cancer survivors, there is limited evidence about their supportive care needs. Unmet information needs are commonly reported throughout the cancer journey. This study examined information needs, satisfaction, and sources of information among women recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer at key touchpoints: pre-diagnosis, diagnosis, and treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional mixed methods study recruited women and people with female reproductive organs identified via the Queensland Cancer Register who were diagnosed in the previous 13 m

Health Information Scanning and Seeking in Diverse Language, Cultural and Technological Media Among Latinx Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Continuous scientific and policy debate regarding the potential harm and/or benefit of media and social media on adolescent health has resulted, in part, from a deficiency in robust scientific evidence. Even with a lack of scientific consensus, public attitudes, and sweeping social media prohibitions have swiftly ensued. A focus on the diversity of adolescents around the world and their diverse use of language, culture, and social media is absent from these discussions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to guide communication policy and practice, including those addressing access to soci

Beliefs Underlying Colorectal Cancer Information Seeking Among Young Black Adults: a Reasoned Action Approach Elicitation Study.

Colorectal cancer in younger adults is more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage. Furthermore, younger Black adults are more likely to be diagnosed with and die from colorectal cancer than younger White adults. Given these persistent racial disparities, urgent attention is needed to increase colorectal cancer awareness and information seeking among young Black adults. Guided by the reasoned action approach, the purpose of this study was to identify behavioral, normative, and control beliefs that influence general colorectal cancer information seeking, talking to a healthcare provider ab
