The devastating outcome of massive subcutaneous injection of highly viscous fluids in male-to-female transsexuals.

Illicit subcutaneous injections of massive quantities of highly viscous fluids are still performed, often by unqualified persons. Fifteen male-to-female transsexuals consulted the authors regarding their devastating long-term outcomes after the injection of up to 8 liters of alleged silicone or mineral oil to feminize their bodies. After a latency period of up to 17 years, these injections led to complications ranging from scarring and deformity to infections. These patients were treated conservatively for inflammation and infection or surgically by resection of the oil-infested areas. In view

Central venous catheter with subcutaneous injection port (Port-A-Cath): clinical experience with children.

Long-term intermittent venous access was established in 26 children by means of a central venous catheter (CVC) with a subcutaneous injection port (Port-A-Cath) (PAC). As of December, 1985, PACs had been in place for 20-750 days (cumulative 10,890 days) with 647 entries into the system. The PACs were used for blood sampling and administration of chemotherapy, antibiotics, fluids, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and blood products. One patient with sever neutropenia (absolute neutrophil granulocyte count [ANC] less than 0.1 x 10(9)/L) at the time of the PAC implant developed an infection arou

Refinement of the rat acetylcholine receptor-specific passive transfer myasthenia gravis model using subcutaneous injections: an update to the guidelines.

The passive transfer model of myasthenia gravis (PTMG) reflects the effector phase of the human condition and is induced in female rats using monoclonal antibodies. The current guideline recommends administration of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) such as mAb35 via intraperitoneal (I.P.) or intravenous (I.V.) injection, offering rapid absorption, but posing challenges such as injection placement and, in the case of I.P., animal discomfort. In this study, we investigated the suitability of subcutaneous (S.C.) administration as an alternative to I.P. in the rat PTMG model. Female rats were injected

Not in the vein: 'missed hits', subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and associated harms among people who inject psychoactive drugs in Bristol, United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: The extent of intentional or accidental subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and the factors associated with these have rarely been studied among people who inject drugs, yet these may play an important role in the acquisition bacterial infections. This study describes the extent of these, and in particular the factors and harms associated with accidental subcutaneous and intramuscular injections (i.e. 'missed hits'). METHODS: People who inject drugs were recruited using respondent driven sampling. Weighted data was examined using bivariate analyses and logistic regression.

Cladribine (2-CDA) given as subcutaneous bolus injections is active in pretreated Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia. Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK).

Clinical trials with intravenous cladribine infusions in pretreated patients with Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia have shown a response rate of 40%. Our pharmacokinetic studies revealed that the bioavailability of subcutaneous cladribine is complete but that the concentration-time profile is very different from intravenous administration. We designed this phase II multi-institutional trial to study the activity and toxicity of cladribine given as s.c. bolus injections in patients with symptomatic Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia. Between May 1993 and October 1995, 25 patients were accrued: ma

Subcutaneous injections of penicillin (SCIP): Convenient and effective treatment for Māori, Pacific Peoples and their families in preventing rheumatic heart disease.

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain significant health issues for Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Subcutaneous injection of penicillin (SCIP) enables injections to be given 10-weekly as an alternative to the standard four-weekly intramuscular (IM) injections. As part of a clinical trial involving participants with ARF who have been on SCIP for at least one year, we aim to explore treatment adherence, pain management, and quality of life for Māori and Pacific participants and their families (whānau). A community centred approach align

Prevention of rheumatic heart disease in New Zealand: High-dose subcutaneous benzathine penicillin is cost-saving compared with traditional intramuscular injections.

OBJECTIVES: Acute rheumatic fever is a preventable condition that can lead to chronic illness and early death. Standard prevention with 4-weekly intramuscular (IM) benzathine penicillin G (BPG) injections for ≥10 years may be associated with poor adherence. High-dose 10-weekly subcutaneous penicillin injections (SCIP) may improve adherence by reducing injection frequency. Since 2025, SCIP has been included in the repository of standard operating procedures in lower North Island hospitals in New Zealand (NZ). We compare the costs of delivering a full course of secondary prophylaxis using SCIP v

Calcinosis of the cutis and subcutis: an unusual nonimmunologic adverse reaction to subcutaneous injections of low-molecular-weight calcium-containing heparins.

BACKGROUND: Local side effects at the injection sites of low-molecular-weight heparins are rare and can be of immunologic or nonimmunologic origin. Calcinosis cutis is a rare disorder and occurs in various circumstances. In patients with chronic renal failure the risk of pathologic calcifications is raised due to elevated calcium-phosphorus products. OBJECTIVE: Five patients suffering from renal failure developed remarkable cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules or plaques following subcutaneous nadroparin-calcium injections. Our aim was to evaluate the morphology and precipitation factors of the

Ex vivo Tissue Provides Insight into Bleb Dynamics During Large-Volume Subcutaneous Injection.

PURPOSE: Large-volume subcutaneous injections can create visible protrusions called blebs, whose size and shape affect drug absorption and patient comfort. In vivo pig studies have documented how the bleb dimensions and tissue pressure vary with injection volume, flow rate, and fluid viscosities. However, its underlying mechanics remain unclear due to limited temporal and spatial measurements. This study evaluates whether ex vivo tissue can serve as an inexpensive and practical surrogate to study tissue deformation and uses this model to investigate the roles of fluid properties and vascular p
