A minimal 3D model of mosquito flight behaviour around the human baited bed net.

BACKGROUND: Advances in digitized video-tracking and behavioural analysis have enabled accurate recording and quantification of mosquito flight and host-seeking behaviours, facilitating development of individual (agent) based models at much finer spatial scales than previously possible. METHODS: Quantified behavioural parameters were used to create a novel virtual testing model, capable of accurately simulating indoor flight behaviour by a virtual population of host-seeking mosquitoes as they interact with and respond to simulated stimuli from a human-occupied bed net. The model is described,

Is malaria over-diagnosed? A world malaria day 2017 experience by Excellence and Friends Management Care Centre (EFMC) and partners, Abuja Nigeria.

Malaria remains a major cause of mortality across the world, but particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. WHO-sponsored World Malaria Day activity has helped to improve education and has contributed to a reduction in mortality globally in the past decade. However, much needs to be done still in Africa. We report on a World Malaria Day scheme in three primary Healthcare Facilities in and around the Abuja Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria in 2017. Activity included educational talks to pregnant women and nursing mothers of young children, with malarial testing, distribution of free mosquito nets a

Recent advances in research and control of malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis and schistosomiasis.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis are the parasitic diseases of major importance. Our review focuses on recent advances in the control and treatment of these diseases with particular reference to diagnosis, chemotherapy, vaccines, vector and environmental control. The Roll Back Malaria Programme, for example, emphasizes the use of insecticide treated bednets in Africa and targets a 30-fold increase in treated bednet use by 2007. Increasing risk factors for leishmaniasis include urbanization, e

Effect of a spatial repellent on malaria incidence in an area of western Kenya characterised by high malaria transmission, insecticide resistance, and universal coverage of insecticide treated nets (part of the AEGIS Consortium): a cluster-randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellent products are used for prevention of insect bites, and a body of evidence exists on spatial repellent entomological efficacy. A new option for vector control, spatial repellent products are designed to release active ingredient into the air for disruption of human-vector contact thereby reducing human exposure to mosquito-borne pathogens. Clinical trials have shown spatial repellent epidemiological efficacy against Aedes-borne viruses but inconclusive outcomes against malaria. We aimed to show and quantify the protective efficacy of spatial repellents in reducing m

Use of a portable field-adapted liquid chromatographic system (C-Vue machine) to estimate the quantity of deltamethrin on insecticide-treated nets paired with WHO cone bioassays to determine ITN bioefficacy as part of three-year durability monitoring in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring insecticide levels and physical integrity over time is essential for assessing the durability of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), which largely depends on the net handling habits of users. This study determined the insecticide content and effectiveness of ITNs (Yorkool and PermaNet 2.0) at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months after a mass distribution campaign in Mali. METHODS: At 6 months (May, 2018), 12 months (December, 2018), 24 months (November-December, 2019), and 36 months (November-December, 2020), 30 nets were randomly collected from households in the districts of Kenieba

Vaccination and combined optimal control measures for malaria prevention and spread mitigation.

Malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne infectious disease prevalent in tropical regions, primarily transmitted to humans by the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. This study presents a mathematical model analysis aimed at understanding the dynamics of malaria transmission and the effectiveness of various prevention strategies. Despite being preventable and curable, malaria continues to pose significant public health challenges, notably due to the risk of recurrent infections if improperly treated. The proposed deterministic model establishes the positivity and boundedness of solutio

Impact of malaria vector control interventions implemented in Luangwa District southeastern of Zambia: A 13-year observational time series analysis of malaria trends.

INTRODUCTION: Luangwa District has one of the longest running legacy datasets in Zambia regarding reliable monitoring of confirmed malaria cases through the national Health Management Information System (HMIS). It was also one of the first districts to achieve sustained coverage with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticides. METHODS: HMIS data from2009 to 2021 were analysed using generalized linear mixed models, to assess the effects of LLINs and IRS on rates of inpatient admissions with severe malaria and total confirmed malaria cases. IRS tre

Malaria morbidity and mortality in Ebola-affected countries caused by decreased health-care capacity, and the potential effect of mitigation strategies: a modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing Ebola epidemic in parts of west Africa largely overwhelmed health-care systems in 2014, making adequate care for malaria impossible and threatening the gains in malaria control achieved over the past decade. We quantified this additional indirect burden of Ebola virus disease. METHODS: We estimated the number of cases and deaths from malaria in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from Demographic and Health Surveys data for malaria prevalence and coverage of malaria interventions before the Ebola outbreak. We then removed the effect of treatment and hospital care to esti

Improving the utilization of insecticide-treated nets for malaria prevention among pregnant women, lactating mothers and children in Sierra Leone: a commentary.

Malaria in pregnancy poses significant public health challenges with severe consequences for mothers, fetuses, and newborns. Despite the proven efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), the coverage rate among pregnant women, lactating mothers and young children in sub-Saharan Africa remains suboptimal. For example, in Sierra Leone, only 52% of pregnant women and 50% of children under five years utilize ITNs. This coverage rate fell short of the national target, in which at least 80% of pregnant women are expected to report sleeping under an ITN. While considerable research has examined ITN

Comparing the new Ifakara Ambient Chamber Test with WHO cone and tunnel tests for bioefficacy and non-inferiority testing of insecticide-treated nets.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated net (ITN) durability, measured through physical integrity and bioefficacy, must be accurately assessed in order to plan the timely replacement of worn out nets and guide procurement of longer-lasting, cost-effective nets. World Health Organization (WHO) guidance advises that new intervention class ITNs be assessed 3 years after distribution, in experimental huts. In order to obtain information on whole-net efficacy cost-effectively and with adequate replication, a new bioassay, the Ifakara Ambient Chamber Test (I-ACT), a semi-field whole net assay baited with hu

Barriers of persistent long-lasting insecticidal nets utilization in villages around Lake Tana, Northwest Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia. The use of LLINs is an effective approach to reducing transmission. Persistent use of LLINs is determined by numerous factors. Quantitative studies have assessed LLIN ownership and utilization, but the behavioral, socio-cultural, socioeconomic and net distribution contexts that impact their use have not been examined in depth. This study aimed to explore barriers of persistent LLIN use among communities around Lake Tana. METHODS: Twenty-three community residents who owned LLINs (15) or not (8) during the study period and 3

An observational analysis of the impact of deltamethrin + piperonyl butoxide insecticide-treated nets on malaria case incidence and entomological indicators in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, 2017-2021.

BACKGROUND: Intense pyrethroid resistance threatens the effectiveness of the primary vector control intervention, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), in Nigeria, the country with the largest malaria burden globally. In this study, the epidemiological and entomological impact of a new type of ITN (piperonyl-butoxide [PBO] ITNs) distributed in Ebonyi State were evaluated. The epidemiological impact was also compared to the impact of standard pyrethroid-only ITNs in Cross River State. METHODS: A controlled interrupted time series analysis was conducted on monthly malaria incidence data collected at

Differential impact of dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets on primary malaria vectors: a secondary analysis of a 3-year, single-blind, cluster-randomised controlled trial in rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Gains in malaria control are threatened by widespread pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors across sub-Saharan Africa. New long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) containing two active ingredients (dual active-ingredient LLINs) have been developed to interrupt transmission in areas of pyrethroid resistance. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three dual active-ingredient LLINs compared with standard pyrethroid LLINs against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors in rural Tanzania. METHODS: In this study, we did a secondary analysis of entomological data from a four-group, 3
