The connections of the insular VEN area in great apes: A histologically-guided ex vivo diffusion tractography study.

We mapped the connections of the insular von Economo neuron (VEN) area in ex vivo brains of a bonobo, an orangutan and two gorillas with high angular resolution diffusion MRI imaging acquired in 36 h imaging sessions for each brain. The apes died of natural causes without neurological disorders. The localization of the insular VEN area was based on cresyl violet-stained histological sections from each brain that were coregistered with structural and diffusion images from the same individuals. Diffusion MRI tractography showed that the insular VEN area is connected with olfactory, gustatory, vi

Differential involvement of frontoparietal network and insula cortex in emotion regulation.

Emotion regulation (ER) is an essential part of our daily life. To effectively regulate emotions, different types of strategies may be adopted. Although previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the frontoparietal cortex is critical for the regulation of emotions, reports about the specific brain regions involved in each strategy remain inconsistent. Therefore, the present study recruited 32 healthy participants to directly examine three typical ER strategies (distraction, reappraisal, and suppression) with an emotional regulation paradigm using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)

Brain lesion and echocardiogenic predictors of newly detected atrial fibrillation in acute ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVES: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the notorious risk factors in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and the use of anticoagulants has been shown to be effective in preventing ischemic stroke in AF patients. Therefore, identifying AF in AIS patients has become increasingly important. However, the impact of brain imaging and cardiac indices on the development of new AF after stroke remains unclear. METHODS: A consecutive series of AIS patients who were admitted to the Ulsan University Hospital between January 2013 and December 2019 were identified. Patients with relevant ischemic brain le

Anxiety sensitivity correlates with two indices of right anterior insula structure in specific animal phobia.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a dispositional trait involving fear of anxiety-related symptoms. Functional imaging research suggests that the activity of the anterior insular cortex, particularly the right insula, may both mediate AS and play a role in the pathophysiology of phobias. However, no imaging studies have examined whether AS relates to insula morphology. We examined whether AS was significantly correlated with right anterior insula volume and thickness among adults with specific animal phobia (SAP) and healthy comparison (HC) subjects. METHODS: Nineteen adults with SAP an

Brain morphological alterations and their correlation to tumor differentiation and duration in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy-related brain impairments and changes can occur in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy and have a substantial impact on survivors' quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the brain neuropathological alterations and response mechanisms to provide a theoretical basis for rehabilitation strategies. This study aimed to investigate the related brain morphological changes and clarified their correlation with clinical and pathological indicators in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy. METHODS: Overall, 28 patients with che

A Novel Insular/Orbital-Prelimbic Circuit That Prevents Persistent Avoidance in a Rodent Model of Compulsive Behavior.

BACKGROUND: A common symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder is the persistent avoidance of cues incorrectly associated with negative outcomes. This maladaptation becomes increasingly evident as subjects fail to respond to extinction-based treatments such as exposure-with-response prevention therapy. While previous studies have highlighted the role of the insular-orbital cortex in fine-tuning avoidance-based decisions, little is known about the projections from this area that might modulate compulsive-like avoidance. METHODS: Here, we used anatomical tract-tracing, single-unit recording, and

The insula: Leveraging cellular and systems-level research to better understand its roles in health and schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a highly heterogeneous disorder characterized by a multitude of complex and seemingly non-overlapping symptoms. The insular cortex has gained increasing attention in neuroscience and psychiatry due to its involvement in a diverse range of fundamental human experiences and behaviors. This review article provides an overview of the insula's cellular and anatomical organization, functional and structural connectivity, and functional significance. Focusing on specific insula subregions and using knowledge gained from humans and preclinical studies of insular tracings in non-human

Reading frequency and Kawaii-Related Oshikatsu: Positive correlations with gray matter volume in Indoor lifestyles.

Reading and kawaii-related oshikatsu (fan support activities) are among the most widely enjoyed hobbies. Previous studies have shown that gray matter volume (GMV) of the insular cortex is associated with the degree of alexithymia, which is linked to reduced mentalizing ability and motivation, and that inter- and intra-insular networks are related to reading. Similarly, studies suggest that by stimulating motivations for protection and caregiving, the insula-associated with empathy and reward processing-plays a role in responses to infants and other kawaii objects (i.e., objects perceived as cu

The human insula encodes somatotopic representation of motor execution with an effector-specific connectome map to primary motor cortex.

Understanding motor representation in the human brain requires mapping beyond the primary motor cortex, into the distributed networks that coordinate complex movements. The insular cortex, a multifunctional hub buried within the Sylvian fissure, has been implicated in motor control through clinical observations and neuroimaging. Yet its precise relation to primary sensorimotor processing remains one of the least understood aspects of motor neurophysiology. To address this gap, we quantified electrophysiological changes from implanted depth electrodes in patients performing simple movement task

Activation of Internal Correctness Monitoring Circuitry in Youths With Psychosis Spectrum Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Self-directed performance monitoring is a critical contributor to cognitive performance and general functioning and is impacted by psychiatric symptoms and personality traits, but has been understudied in psychosis-risk states. We have shown that ventral striatum (VS) responds to correctness during cognitive tasks where no explicit feedback is required, and this intrinsic reinforcement response is reduced in schizophrenia. METHODS: Here, we examined this phenomenon in youths (n = 796, age range 11-22 years) from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) performing a working

Neural correlates of blink suppression and the buildup of a natural bodily urge.

Neuroimaging studies have elucidated some of the underlying physiology of spontaneous and voluntary eye blinking; however, the neural networks involved in eye blink suppression remain poorly understood. Here we investigated blink suppression by analyzing fMRI data in a block design and event-related manner, and employed a novel hypothetical time-varying neural response model to detect brain activations associated with the buildup of urge. Blinks were found to activate visual cortices while our block design analysis revealed activations limited to the middle occipital gyri and deactivations in

Interpreting the S1BF-ACC-LHb pathway in trigeminal neuralgia-associated affective behavior.

The study by Wang and colleagues proposes that three connected brain areas link facial nerve injury to pain and depression-like behavior in mice. The experiments are ambitious and potentially important. However, the nerve-injury model differs from the defining pattern of human trigeminal neuralgia, several behavioral and drug controls leave alternative explanations open, and measurements from many cells were not clearly separated from the animals that supplied them. Clarifying these issues, and distinguishing results from whole tissue from results specific to neurons, would make the causal and

Large tumour volume reduction of IDH-mutated anaplastic glioma involving the insular region following radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The impact of near-total resection of IDH-mutated anaplastic glioma (IDHmutAG) is well-established but there remains uncertainty of benefit in tumours of the insular cortex where the extent of safe resection may be limited. This study aimed to assess tumour volume reduction in patients following IMRT and impact of residual post-surgical volume. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with IDHmutAG involving insular cortex managed with IMRT from 2008 to 2019 had baseline patient, tumour and treatment factors recorded. Volumetric assessment of residual disease on MRI was performed at baseli

Subjective well-being is associated with the functional connectivity network of the dorsal anterior insula.

The feeling of happiness is beneficial for both mental and physical health. Based on the findings of previous studies that reported that the insular cortex is a crucial region for subjective feelings, including happiness, in this study, we further identified the subregion of the insula and its functional connectivity associated with subjective well-being (SWB). Using an iterative seed-target-seed approach, we labelled the posterior, dorsal, and ventral anterior insular regions of interest (ROIs) and evaluated the association between functional connectivity of each of these insular ROIs and the

Cortical localisation of magnetic fields evoked by oesophageal distension.

Magnetoencephalographic source localisation techniques were used to measure oesophageal evoked magnetic fields from the cerebral cortex in 3 subjects. By using rapid balloon distension as a stimulus, a comparison of proximal and distal oesophageal cortical representation was made. The distal oesophagus was represented bilaterally in the insular cortex and SII as well as the inferior aspect of SI. The proximal oesophagus was represented unilaterally in superior and inferior SI, insular cortex and SII. Significantly, the superior portion of SI was consistently activated in subjects following sti

Direct Parabrachial-Cortical Connectivity.

The parabrachial nucleus (PB) in the upper brain stem tegmentum includes several neuronal subpopulations with a wide variety of connections and functions. A subpopulation of PB neurons projects axons directly to the cerebral cortex, and limbic areas of the cerebral cortex send a return projection directly to the PB. We used retrograde and Cre-dependent anterograde tracing to identify genetic markers and characterize this PB-cortical interconnectivity in mice. Cortical projections originate from glutamatergic PB neurons that contain Lmx1b (81%), estrogen receptor alpha (26%), and Satb2 (20%), p

Prosencephalic afferents to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus.

The afferent projections from the prosencephalon to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) were studied in the cat by use of the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Cortical and subcortical prosencephalic structures project bilaterally to the MD. The cortical afferents originate mainly in the ipsilateral prefrontal cortex. The premotor, prelimbic, anterior limbic, and insular agranular cortical areas are also origins of consistent projections to the MD. The motor cortex, insular granular area, and some other cortical association areas may be the source of cortical co

MEG Coherence and DTI Connectivity in mTLE.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive imaging method for localization of focal epileptiform activity in patients with epilepsy. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a noninvasive imaging method for measuring the diffusion properties of the underlying white matter tracts through which epileptiform activity is propagated. This study investigates the relationship between the cerebral functional abnormalities quantified by MEG coherence and structural abnormalities quantified by DTI in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE). Resting state MEG data was analyzed using MEG coherence source imaging

Neuronal injury produced by NMDA antagonists can be detected using heat shock proteins and can be blocked with antipsychotics.

Noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists, including ketamine, MK-801, and phencyclidine (PCP), induce the HSP70 heat shock or stress gene in pyramidal neurons in rat posterior cingulate and retrosplenial cortex. PCP also induces HSP70 in many other pyramidal neurons in brain including neocortex, insular cortex, piriform cortex, hippocampus, and basal nuclei of the amygdala. Several neurotransmitter antagonists, including haloperidol, clozapine, SCH-22390, diazepam, and muscimol, inhibited induction of HSP70 produced by PCP. Baclofen had no effect. Nifedipine blocked indu
