Willingness-to-Pay for Health Insurance in South Asia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In low- and middle-income countries, healthcare systems rely heavily on out-of-pocket payments, causing financial hardship and limiting access to care. Globally, 800 million people spend over 10% of household income on healthcare, driving 100 million into extreme poverty due to catastrophic health expenditures (CHE). In South Asia, out-of-pocket (OOP) payments remain the primary funding source, with India and Bangladesh reporting significant CHE burdens. Health insurance (HI) can reduce costs, improve access and mitigate CHE, playing a key role in achieving universal health cover

Willingness to pay for health insurance in Italy: evidence from a survey on consumers' behaviour.

This paper examines the willingness to pay (WTP) for duplicative private health insurance in Italy, a country with universal healthcare system characterized by broad public coverage alongside substantial waiting times and relatively high out-of-pocket expenditure. Using nationally representative data from the Italian Survey of Consumer Expectations (ISCE), we elicit individual WTP through a structured bidding mechanism for insurance offering faster access to surgeries, outpatient procedures, and diagnostic examinations already covered by the public system. Willingness to pay increases with inc

Health Insurance and Trauma Outcomes: The Impact of Coverage on Survival and Recovery in Craniomaxillofacial Injuries.

Introduction Health disparities, particularly those related to insurance status, significantly impact trauma outcomes. Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma patients without insurance often experience worse outcomes due to limited access to care and delayed treatment. This study examines the effects of insurance coverage on outcomes such as length of stay (LOS), survival, and surgical site infections (SSIs) among CMF trauma patients in Puerto Rico. Methods An institutional review board-approved retrospective analysis was conducted on 1,165 CMF trauma patients treated at the Puerto Rico Medical Cent

Health insurance continuity and mortality in children, adolescents, and young adults with blood cancer.

BACKGROUND: Many uninsured patients do not receive Medicaid coverage until a cancer diagnosis, potentially delaying access to care for early cancer detection and treatment. We examined the association of Medicaid enrollment timing and patterns with survival among children, adolescents, and young adults with diagnosed blood cancers, where disease onset can be acute and early detection is critical. METHODS: We identified 28 750 children, adolescents, and young adults (birth to 39 years of age) with newly diagnosed blood cancers from the 2006-2013 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results prog

Health Insurance and Its Psychosocial Correlates in Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Japan has a national health insurance system that covers at least 70% of regular medical costs and provides additional benefits for high medical costs. In addition, >60% of the population holds private health insurance to reduce financial toxicity. However, there has been a lack of real-world data on private health insurance in the oncology setting in Japan. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of health insurance was conducted at 16 hospitals in Japan between 2013 and 2016. Patients were eligible if they were newly diagnosed with clinical stage IIIB or IV lung cancer. Data collect

Health insurance's contribution to reducing the financial burden of tuberculosis in Guizhou Province, China.

Despite global efforts to end tuberculosis (TB), the goal of preventing catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) due to TB remains unmet. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Data were collected from the Hospital Information System and a survey of TB patients who had completed standardized antituberculosis treatment between January and March 2021. Among the 2 283 participants, the average total expenditure and out-of-pocket expenditure were $1 506.6 (median = $760.5) and $683.6 (median = $437.8), respectively. A Prevalence Estimation of Exstrophy and Epispadias in Germany From Public Health Insurance Data.

Introduction: The prevalence of rare diseases is very important for health care research. According to the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) registers, the live prevalence for exstrophy and/or epispadias (grades 1-3) is reported with 1:23,255 (95% CI: 1:26,316; 1:20,000). A Europe-wide prevalence evaluation based on reports from excellence centers estimates a prevalence for exstrophies of 1:32,200 and for isolated epispadias of 1:96,800 in 2010. However, the frequency of exstrophy [International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems revision 1

Death at no cost? Persons with no health insurance claims in the last year of life in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Lack of health insurance claims (HIC) in the last year of life might indicate suboptimal end-of-life care, but reasons for no HIC are not fully understood because information on causes of death is often missing. We investigated association of no HIC with characteristics of individuals and their place of residence. METHODS: We analysed HIC of persons who died between 2008 and 2010, which were obtained from six providers of mandatory Swiss health insurance. We probabilistically linked these persons to death certificates to get cause of death information and analysed data using sex-s
