Novel clinical and genetic insight into CXorf56-associated intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is one of most frequent reasons for genetic consultation. The complex molecular anatomy of ID ranges from complete chromosomal imbalances to single nucleotide variant changes occurring de novo, with thousands of genes identified. This extreme genetic heterogeneity challenges the molecular diagnosis, which mostly requires a genomic approach. CXorf56 is largely uncharacterized and was recently proposed as a candidate ID gene based on findings in a single Dutch family. Here, we describe nine cases (six males and three females) from three unrelated families. Exome sequ

Understanding the nurse's role in identifying children with intellectual disability.

The early diagnosis of children who have intellectual disability (ID) is crucial to ensuring the varied and complex needs of these people and their families are met in a timely and appropriate way. The ability to easily identify all children who should be assessed for ID would increase the chances of children with ID being diagnosed early on in life. This article describes ID, the kind of support children with ID need, and how nursing staff might use the Child and Adolescent Intellectual Disability Screening Questionnaire (CAIDS-Q) to help identify children who should be formally assessed for

Examples of individual supported living for adults with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: This article provides a qualitative account of four models of support for adults with intellectual disability in individual supported living (ISL) arrangements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Completion of the first 50 evaluations of 150 arrangements for the third phase of the ISL project provided the examples. RESULTS: Four approaches are described: living alone, co-residency, relationship and host family. Within each type, wide variations occur particularly based on security of tenure, formal and informal support and management variations. CONCLUSION: Fifty evaluations so far illustra

Maternally inherited autosomal dominant intellectual disability caused by 16p13.3 microduplication.

A 16p13.3 duplication syndrome has been recently suggested to be a novel recognizable syndrome as a reciprocal microduplication disease of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. The CREBBP gene is believed to be the dosage-sensitive critical gene responsible for the reciprocal duplication and deletion syndrome. Descriptions so far have been de novo. Here, we report a very rare case of a maternally inherited a -1 Mb sized duplication on 16p13.3 identified by SNP array testing. The patient showed moderate intellectual disability, normal growth, and characteristic facial features. The patient's mother also h

Residential transitions among adults with intellectual disability across 20 years.

The present study addresses critical gaps in the literature by examining residential transitions among 303 adults with intellectual disability (ID) over 10 years (Part 1) and 75 adults with Down syndrome over 20 years (Part 2). All adults lived at home at the start of the study, but many moved to a variety of settings. Several characteristics of the adults with ID differed across settings, most notably adaptive behavior and the number of residential transitions, whereas characteristics such as age, type of disability, and behavior problems were less predictive of residential placements. The nu

Intellectual disability, unusual facial morphology and hand anomalies in sibs.

Here we report on a Portuguese family with three sisters who shared moderate intellectual disability, unusual facial morphology (short palpebral fissures; broad nasal tip; thin upper and lower vermillion; broad and pointed chin) and hand anomalies in two of them (short left third and fifth right metacarpals in one case; marked syndactyly between the third and fourth fingers in another). One of the sisters had microcephaly and short stature, and the other two were obese. Obesity and somewhat similar facial features were also present in the otherwise healthy mother. Cultivating understanding of health issues for adults with intellectual disability.

UNLABELLED: Going into hospital may be a frightening experience. Fears and anxieties may be particularly compounded when the patient has an existing health diagnosis such as a mental health condition or intellectual disabilities (ID). While people with ID often have worse health than other people, they can experience more difficulty accessing healthcare. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to describe the self-evaluation process and outcome of a series of workshops designed to cultivate understanding of the health needs of adults with ID. DESIGN: The research was designed to explore the imp

Psychopathology of sexual abuse in young people with intellectual disability.

The present study addressed two issues using a sample of child and adolescent victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse: (1) the extent of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the sample; and (2) the possible distinction between perpetrators whose motivations were sexually impulsive, and those who were controlling and abuse-reactive. Retrospective case material from 43 cases (21 victims only, and 22 perpetrators, of whom 16 were also victims) provided the data. Post-traumatic symptomatology was not common. Only one case of PTSD was found. Perpetrators could be distinguished by whether they

Depression in adults with intellectual disability. Part 1: A review.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the available literature regarding prevalence, clinical features and treatment of depression in adults with intellectual disability (ID). METHOD: A review of standard texts of ID and available literature examining psychiatric problems of individuals with ID. RESULTS: Few methodologically sound studies of prevalence have been reported. The clinical features of depression in adults with ID appear to vary with level of disability; in those with higher levels of disability in particular, irritability and anger, self-injurious and aggressive behaviour, psychomotor change and

Susceptibility to peer influence on prosocial behavior in adolescents with Mild Intellectual Disability or Borderline Intellectual Functioning.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) or Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF) are highly susceptible to negative peer influence. However, research in typically developing adolescents shows that peers can also promote prosocial behavior, which is an opportunity for positive development. AIMS: The current study aimed to investigate the effect of peer influence on prosocial behavior in adolescents with MID or BIF. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In an experimental donation task, 40 adolescents with MID or BIF (Mage = 14.0, 40 % boys) were repeatedly asked how many of five

Stigma Resistance by Adult Self-Advocates With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities continue to experience stigmatisation, yet little is known about how they manage or resist stigma. The present study aimed to qualitatively explore stigma resistance, including barriers to and facilitators of stigma resistance, from the perspective of self-advocates with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Sixteen adult self-advocates participated in semi-structured virtual interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse interview transcripts. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: (i) asserting oneself, (ii) speaking out, (iii) using lived e

[Assessment of the effects of ornithotherapy in psychiatric patients with intellectual disabilities].

INTRODUCTION: Animal-assisted therapies are increasingly applied in rehabilitation and complementary care, particularly in supporting mental and neurocognitive conditions. The targeted therapeutic use of songbirds and their vocalizations (ornithotherapy) represents a relatively novel approach that remains underrepresented in the international literature, especially regarding objectively measurable physiological outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of an ornithotherapy intervention on blood pressure and pulse rate in a residential institution caring for individ

Access to Communication Assessment and Intervention for Adults With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication is essential for health, quality of life and social participation. Adults with communication disabilities-particularly those with intellectual disabilities-often face systemic barriers to accessing appropriate support. METHOD: A retrospective audit of 497 consultations from 276 adults with intellectual disabilities living in Australian group homes (2017-2022) was conducted at a private speech pathology clinic. The audit examined the proportion of patients recommended for and receiving a full communication assessment. RESULTS: A mixed method analysis was co

Preparticipation and Sideline Evaluation of Athletes with Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disability face several barriers to participation in sports and physical activity. Fortunately, there are opportunities for athletes with intellectual and developmental disability to participate in sport. Special Olympics continues to be the most prominent opportunity. Unfortunately, many physicians and other health care providers may feel underprepared to evaluate and treat athletes with intellectual and developmental disability. While national and international events often have a large number of resources available, access to medical care for
