Laser therapy for refractory discoid lupus erythematosus when everything else has failed.

BACKGROUND: Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is restricted to the skin, mostly the face, often chronic and disfiguring. Standard medical therapies include topical corticosteroids and antimalarials. This is a retrospective long-term follow-up of refractory DLE treated with different lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Sixteen patients with histologically confirmed DLE participated in this study. Two men and fourteen women, aged 28-69 years, mean age 54 years, were treated at the laser units of the Departments of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Örebro from 2

IPL technology: a review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intense pulsed light (IPL) systems are high-intensity light sources, which emit polychromatic light. Unlike laser systems, these flashlamps work with noncoherent light in a broad wavelength spectrum of 515-1,200 nm. These properties allow for great variability in selecting individual treatment parameters and adapting to different types of skin types and indications. The purpose of this article was to critically review international medical publications of the many indication in which IPL technology can be used, including our own evaluations and experiences. Advances in surgical treatment of hidradenitis suppurative.

Hidradenitis suppurative is a chronic, refractory and recurrent dermatological disease. The disease should be managed by targeted surgical intervention on the basis of medical treatment. Currently, the surgical treatment methods include local treatments like incision and drainage, unroofing, laser therapy, intense pulsed light therapy, photodynamic therapy, as well as complete lesion resection such as skin-tissue saving excision with electrosurgical peeling and extended excision. The clearance range, therapeutic effect, postoperative complications, and recurrence risk vary among the different

Combining Deroofing with LAight® Therapy for Long-Term Disease Control of Hurley Stage II Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Case Report.

There is an increasing consensus that the treatment of Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) significantly varies with the degree of inflammation and that treatment according to guidelines is not always successful. Here, we report the case of a 31-year-old male with widespread, highly inflammatory Hurley Stage II HS in multiple locations who failed to respond to any kind of established medical treatment, including biologics. As an alternative approach, Ustekinumab was maintained, and additionally the patient was treated with LAight therapy, a combination of intense pulsed light and radiofrequency. Aft

Management of meibomian gland dysfunction: a review.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease and is one of the most common conditions encountered by eye care providers. The disorder is characterized by obstruction of the meibomian gland terminal ducts and/or changes in their glandular secretion, resulting in changes in tear film stability, inflammation, and symptoms of irritation. There is no gold standard treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction, but rather a diversity of options. Conservative measures include warm compresses and lid hygiene, but there is growing interest and need for medical treatments

Which treatment works better for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: LipiFlow or intense pulsed light? A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of evaporative dry eye disease. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and LipiFlow thermal pulsation are two device-based treatment modalities currently used for managing MGD. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess and compare the efficacy of these interventions. It is important to underscore that none of the 12 studies included in this review directly compare LipiFlow with IPL, making indirect comparisons necessary. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect for randomized controlled tri

Ablative fractional carbon dioxide laser combined with intense pulsed light for the treatment of photoaging skin in Chinese population: A split-face study.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is effective for the treatment of lentigines, telangiectasia, and generalized erythema, but is less effective in the removal of skin wrinkles. Fractional laser is effective on skin wrinkles and textural irregularities, but can induce postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially in Asians. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of ablative fractional laser (AFL) in combination with IPL in the treatment of photoaging skin in Asians. This study included 28 Chinese women with Fitzpatrick skin type III and IV. The side of the face to be treated with IPL alone

Advances in Photodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Actinic Keratosis and Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer: A Narrative Review.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with photosensitization using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) [including a nanoemulsion (BF-200 ALA)] is approved in the USA for the treatment of actinic keratoses (AKs); another derivative, methyl aminolevulinate, is not approved in the USA but is used in Europe. For AK treatment, the photosensitizer may be applied to individual AK lesions or, depending on treatment regimen, to broader areas of sun-damaged skin to manage field cancerization, although not all products are approved for field treatment. ALA-PDT and photosensitizers have also been used off-label for the tre
