Intergenerational support and depressive symptoms among older adults in rural China: the moderating roles of age, living alone, and chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: While depressive symptoms are recognized as major mental health problems in later life, there is a lack of study in examining potential moderators in the association between intergenerational support and depressive symptoms, especially in social contexts with low socioeconomic status and inadequate formal public support. This study set out to examine the association between intergenerational support and depressive symptoms among older adults in rural Northeast China, and the potential moderating roles of age, living alone, and number of chronic diseases on this link. METHODS: A qu

A systematic review of grandparents' influence on grandchildren's cancer risk factors.

Many lifestyle patterns are established when children are young. Research has focused on the potential role of parents as a risk factor for non communicable disease in children, but there is limited investigation of the role of other caregivers, such as grandparents. The aim of this review was to identify and synthesise evidence for any influence grandparents' care practices may have on their grandchildren's long term cancer risk factors. A systematic review was carried out with searches across four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO) as well as searches of reference lists an

The Infant Feeding Genogram: a tool for exploring family infant feeding history and identifying support needs.

BACKGROUND: Family culture and beliefs are passed through the generations within families and influence what constitutes appropriate infant care. This includes infant feeding decisions where a family history and support network congruent with women's infant feeding intentions has been shown to be important to women's breastfeeding experience. This is reflected in breastfeeding rates where women who were not breastfed themselves are less likely to initiate and continue with breastfeeding. Given the importance of family infant feeding history in the initiation and duration of breastfeeding, and

The protective effect of taking care of grandchildren on elders' mental health? Associations between changing patterns of intergenerational exchanges and the reduction of elders' loneliness and depression between 1993 and 2007 in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The 20th century's rapid industrialization and urbanization brought important social changes to Taiwan, including an increased number of elders living alone, which has increased risk of depression for the elderly. This study aimed to evaluate the changing pattern regarding the effect of intergenerational exchanges on elders' depressive symptoms from 1993 to 2007. METHODS: Data from the second-, fourth- and sixth-wave surveys of the Study of Health and Living Status of the Middle-Aged and Elderly in Taiwan were analyzed. This study collected elders' individual sociodemographic char

A review on the evidence of transgenerational transmission of posttraumatic stress disorder vulnerability.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the risks of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development in the next generation of PTSD patients, we conducted a review on the biological, but not genetic, evidence of transgenerational transmission of PTSD vulnerability. METHODS: Pertinent articles published from 1985 to September 2011 were searched using online academic search engines, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, OVID, PsycLIT, and SCOPUS, and a non-systematic review was conducted. RESULTS: There is paradoxical evidence that hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis changes in PTSD patients may also be

Cross-generation link between inactive behavior of schoolchildren and metabolic disease category of parents.

In this study, we determined the cross-generation link between sedentary behavior of schoolchildren with their 6-year BMI progression pattern and metabolic disease category of their parents. Anthropometric data of 11,190 elementary schoolchildren (aged 13) were retrospectively tracked from 2003 to 2009, and classified into two groups: Normal (N = 9793) and Metabolic Disorders (N = 1397), based on the disease category of their parents (under at least one medication for stroke, coronary heart disease (CAD), diabetes, and hypertension). Schoolchildren's weekly time spending on reading, computer u

Helping parental caregivers and mental health consumers cope with parental aging and loss.

As persons with severe and persistent mental illness age, large numbers continue to live with their elderly parents or receive substantial social and economic support from them. Prospective studies suggest that when caregivers die, individuals with mental illness experience housing disruptions and potentially traumatic transitions. This paper describes the scope of the problem and addresses pragmatic and psychological issues involved in preparing both caregivers and patients for parental aging and eventual loss. It outlines the practitioner's role in helping patients and families overcome spec

Intergenerational Childhood Maltreatment in Persons with DSM-IV Pathological Gambling and Their First-Degree Relatives.

This study investigates the characteristics of individuals with DSM-IV pathological gambling (PG) who experienced childhood maltreatment and rates of maltreatment occurring in their first-degree relatives (FDRs). 94 subjects with DSM-IV PG, 91 controls, and 312 FDRs were assessed for childhood maltreatment as part of a family study of PG. Maltreatment was evaluated using the Revised Childhood Experiences Questionnaire. The Family Assessment Device was used to evaluate the functionality of the PG subject's (or control's) family of origin. Data were analyzed using logistic regression by the meth

Mechanistic Pathways of Gestational Obesity: Implications for Maternal and Offspring Health: A Narrative Review.

Gestational obesity, defined as obesity during pregnancy or a pre-pregnancy BMI ≥30, is a growing global health challenge with profound implications for both maternal and offspring health. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the mechanistic pathways by which maternal obesity affects pregnancy outcomes and intergenerational health trajectories. For mothers, gestational obesity increases the risk of gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, cesarean delivery, and postpartum weight retention. Offspring exposed to maternal obesity face higher risks of obesity, metabolic syndr

"I Was Trying to Be the Mother to Her That I Didn't Have": Mothers' Experiences of Child Sexual Abuse and Intergenerational Maltreatment.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) can have lasting negative impacts on one's sense of safety and trust, ultimately affecting the quality of relationships, and increasing the likelihood of future victimization experiences. The present study provides a qualitative description of the themes that were generated through interviews conducted with 23 mothers who experienced CSA (dis)continuity (12 continuity, 11 discontinuity). The mothers described a variety of experiences related to parent-child and romantic relationships and parenting behaviors, which could be further researched and targeted by interventio

English perceptions of elder abuse.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate an English sample's perceptions on elder abuse, inflicted by adult children against their aging parents. Fifty participants (14 males, 46 females) provided examples of extreme, moderate, and mild elder abuse. As examples of extreme abuse, most participants mentioned neglect and physical aggression. Various forms of neglect and psychological abuse were their most common examples of moderate and mild abuse. References to physical aggression appeared most often as examples of extreme abuse rather than of moderate or mild abuse. Within these

Alzheimer's disease: the impact of the family on spouses, offspring, and inlaws.

This article reports the findings from a study designed to identify qualities of the multigeneration family system that affected the relationship between the demands of Alzheimer's disease on the family and the health and well-being of (a) spouses, (b) offspring, and (c) offspring's spouses or "inlaws." Members of 97 families of patients with Alzheimer's disease, recruited from four University-affiliated Alzheimer's Centers, completed detailed questionnaires and participated in a 45-minute telephone interview to assess care-strain, personal stress, appraisals of three major domains of family l

Intergenerational Narratives of the Intrauterine Device: A Culture-Centered Approach to Female Contraception in Contemporary China.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) were widely promoted in China during the family planning era and became a central contraceptive technology shaping women's reproductive experiences. Guided by the culture-centered approach, this study examines how contraceptive knowledge and bodily experiences related to the IUD are communicated across generations within families. Based on in-depth interviews with mothers and daughters, the study analyzes how structure, culture, and agency interact in shaping intergenerational health communication about IUDs. The findings show that state family planning policies and

It's time to tell: early naming of HIV to children can break the cycle of intergenerational stigma and reduce self-stigma.

Children living with HIV are not routinely informed of their HIV diagnosis: open communication is not yet standard global practice (Warburton et al., 2022). This article presents data from a qualitative study aimed at establishing an evidence-based approach to telling children they are HIV positive. An arts-based narrative inquiry methodology was used. Sixteen young people and ten parents were recruited via voluntary sector organizations in the United Kingdom and shared their experiences through focus group participation. Participants used arts resources to create something of their choice as

Receiving advice from mothers and depressive symptoms in midlife: exploring the moderating roles of gender and relationship quality.

OBJECTIVES: Advice has been conceptualized as both a form of support and as a threat to recipients' feelings of autonomy and competence. However, little is known about the effects of advice from mothers on adult children's psychological well-being. This study examines the association between the frequency of advice from mothers and adult children's depressive symptoms. In addition, we investigate the ways in which this association is shaped by the gender of the adult child and the quality of the mother-child relationship. METHODS: The sample included 687 adult children (mean age: 49.1) in 283

The Impact of Adversity and Maternal Depression on Neural Reward Responsivity in Young Children.

BACKGROUND: Early life adversity (ELA) is a known risk factor for mental health disorders across development and may confer vulnerability to psychopathology through alterations in reward processing. However, little is known about how distinct dimensions of ELA, particularly experiences of threat and deprivation across individual and neighborhood levels, shape reward responsiveness in early childhood. Prior work in adolescents suggests that maternal depression history may moderate associations between ELA and reward reactivity, underscoring the importance of considering familial risk contexts.

Indigenous oral traditions and psychological well-being under modernization: from external valuation to relational selfhood.

Across many Indigenous communities, modernization, urbanization, market integration, formal schooling, language shift, and cultural commodification have reshaped the conditions under which psychological well-being is understood and sustained. These pressures influence how Indigenous identities, languages, knowledges, and cultural practices are valued within dominant social, educational, economic, and clinical frameworks. This article conceptualizes Indigenous oral traditions as living psychosocial knowledge embedded in community-held epistemic and relational infrastructures and examines their

Why Human Germline Editing is More Problematic than Selecting Between Embryos: Ethically Considering Intergenerational Relationships.

Do we have a moral obligation to genetically cure embryos rather than selecting between them? Such an obligation would be an ethical argument for human germline gene editing (hGGE) to avoid the inheritance of genetic conditions instead of using pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). In this article, the intuition that we do have such a moral obligation is critically evaluated. The article first develops a theoretical framework for discussing the ethical questions of hGGE. This framework is based on an exploration of the phenomenology of the germline, from both biological and philosophical p

Parenting after a history of childhood maltreatment: A scoping review and map of evidence in the perinatal period.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Child maltreatment is a global health priority affecting up to half of all children worldwide, with profound and ongoing impacts on physical, social and emotional wellbeing. The perinatal period (pregnancy to two years postpartum) is critical for parents with a history of childhood maltreatment. Parents may experience 'triggering' of trauma responses during perinatal care or caring for their distressed infant. The long-lasting relational effects may impede the capacity of parents to nurture their children and lead to intergenerational cycles of trauma. Conversely, the peri

Significance of perinatal trauma screening and care coordination to improve infant health outcomes.

This commentary addresses the need for trauma-informed screening and coordinated mental health care across obstetric (OB) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) settings. Perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health conditions are common yet under-recognized, particularly among individuals exposed to medical trauma, prior adversity, or interpersonal violence. Perinatal PTSD prevalence estimates range from 3-6 % in community samples and 15-25 % in high-risk populations, including NICU parents, individuals with obstetric complications, and those with prior trauma hi
