OBJECTIVES: To identify socio-demographic and health-related factors associated with (a) acupuncture use and (b) the rated helpfulness of acupuncture among internal medicine patients.
METHODS: Data from a larger cross-sectional trial were reanalyzed. Patients who had used acupuncture for managing their primary medical complaint were compared to patients who had not. Predictors for (a) acupuncture use and (b) rated helpfulness were determined using logistic regression analyses.

BACKGROUND: Disability is prevalent among patients treated in Internal Medicine (IM), but its impact on length of inpatient stay (LOS) is unknown. Current systems of patient management and resource allocation are disease-focused with scant attention paid to functional impairment. Polymyalgia rheumatica can be characterised by pain and stiffness in the shoulder and pelvic girdles, with a raised ESR and a dramatic response to corticosteroid therapy. Case reports and clinical symptoms of six patients with polymyalgia rheumatica are reported by the authors. All of the patients were female with mean age 54.3 years. 11.8 months were registered between the initial symptoms of the disease and the establishment of the diagnosis. This relatively long period of time can be caused by the poor recognition of the disease, besides the difficulties of the diagnosis.

A retrospective study concerning anamnestic data as well as an internal and dactyloscopic examination were caried out on 75 woman who were delivered from a deformed child. Apart from the well-known causes of a deformity the chronic arterial hypertension is emphasized as teratogenetic factor. The dactyloscopic examination did not result in an accumulation of stigmata which refer to a genetic condition of the deformities. Differences concerning the distribution of patterns on the finger-tips need further investigations; at present they are not yet to be explained.
