Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome Manifested as Multiple Polyps in Jejunum With Intussusception.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a relatively rare autosomal dominant genetic disease, often manifested as mucous membranes, skin pigmented spots and multiple polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. It can be followed by a variety of serious complications such as bleeding, obstruction, intussusception, and malignant transformation. We introduce the case of a 26-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with multiple polyps in the jejunum with intussusception caused by PJS. He was discharged after emergency surgery reduction and partial resection of the small intestine. Gastrointestinal polyps, hemo

Clinical characteristics and surgical outcome in children with intussusceptions secondary to pathologic lead points: retrospective study in a single institution.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception secondary to pathologic lead points (PLPs) is a potential surgical emergency and almost all cases need surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations, physical examinations and surgical outcomes of secondary intussusception (SI) caused by PLPs, as well as to improve the diagnosis and treatment of PLPs in children and infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 83 children and infants who were diagnosed with intussusception secondary to PLPs in our institution. The ultimate diagnosis was dependent on histopa

Ileal Intussusception Caused by Vanek's Tumor: A Case Report.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps (Vanek's tumor) are rare benign localized lesions originating in the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Intussusceptions due to inflammatory fibroid polyps are uncommon; moreover, ileo-ileal intussusception with small bowel necrosis and perforation has rarely been reported. We report a 56-year-old woman who was admitted two days after complaints of nausea and vomiting. Abdominal examination revealed distension, signs of gastrointestinal perforation and clanging intestinal sounds. The patient underwent a emergency laparotomy which found a 17-cm invaginated mid-

Hereditary intestinal polyposis syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with overall mortality exceeding 40% even with treatment. Effective efforts for screening and prevention are most likely to succeed in patient groups identified as high risk for colorectal cancer, most notably the hereditary intestinal polyposis syndromes. In these syndromes, benign polyps develop throughout the intestinal tract prior to the development of colorectal cancer, marking the patient and associated family for precancer diagnosis followed by either close surveillance or preventive treatment. PURPOSE: This

A solitary Peutz-Jeghers-type hamartomatous polyp of the rectum: report of a case and review of the literature.

A solitary Peutz-Jeghers-type polyp of the rectum in a 64-year-old Japanese man is reported. Barium enema and endoscopic examination revealed a solitary polypoid lesion in the rectum. The polyp was pedunculated, and measured 2 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm. The patient had neither mucocutaneous pigmentation nor a family history of gastro-intestinal polyposis. Histopathologically, this polyp had an arborizing muscular network originating from the muscularis mucosa, and was covered by well organized mucosa with epithelial hyperplasia. The smooth muscle bundles in the polyp were thicker than those seen in Peutz

Two cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome presenting as bowel obstruction from intussusception.

Two unusual cases of small intestinal intussusception presenting as bowel obstruction are presented. They both had freckle-like pigmentation of the perioral area, palms and soles of the feet with intestinal polyps which acted as lead points in the intussusception. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome was diagnosed. This report highlights the high risk of cancer of the intestines and extra-intestinal sites associated with this interesting but rare condition.

Incidental Diagnosis of Serrated Polyposis Syndrome of the Small and Large Bowel Treated Endoscopically and Surgically: A Case Report.

Colorectal serrated polyps are now recognized as an important pathway in colorectal carcinogenesis. An association between serrated polyposis syndrome (SPS) and duodenal serrated lesions sharing a similar immunophenotype in both the colon and duodenum has been reported in the literature. We present a case of a 38-year-old male who presented in June 2023 with abdominal pain and fever. Initial investigations, including multiple computed tomography scans of the abdomen and pelvis, revealed an appendiceal abscess and small bowel intussusception involving two segments of the jejunum without evidenc

Lipomatosis coli, a mimicker of familial polyposis.

Multiple intestinal lipomas (lipomatous polyposis) are quite rare, and they can be quite challenging to diagnose because this condition may be clinically confused with familial adenomatous polyposis with a suggestive family history. Herein, we present a case of lipomatous polyposis that was presented with abdominal pain and, in colonoscopy, had more than 100 polyps. The patient was admitted for surgery with diagnosis of familial polyposis. Resected colon specimen had multiple polyps ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 cm. Microscopically, the polyps were composed of mature adipose tissue with normal overl

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of adult intussusception caused by pedunculated colon carcinoma.

Adult intussusception is clinically rare. We report a case with colon intussusception caused by a pedunculated polyp of the sigmoid colon in a 54-year-old male. Abdominal ultrasonographic screening for hematochezia showed intussusception in the sigmoid colon, demonstrating a multiple concentric ring sign and a mobile leading colon polyp. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen of the polyp revealed adenoma. This report suggests that ultrasound imaging is a modality of choice for differential diagnosis of intestinal intussusception with hematochezia in adults.

Multiple radiopaque masses in the jaws.

In this report, the less common oral findings occurring in Gardner's syndrome are described, which occurred concurrently with colorectal polyposis. In addition, what clinically appeared as small intestinal polyps, microscopically represented nodular lymphoid hyperplasia, as reported in the literature. Review of the literature showed the oral findings reported here are not common and that enzyme assays can help detect polyps at an early stage of this complex syndrome.

[Small intestinal polyposis in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: combined treatment with surgery and intra-operative endoscopy].

Polyps occur throughout the gastrointestinal tract in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, but the most serious problems are encountered in the management of small bowel polyposis. We report here on a case of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome admitted to hospital for intestinal obstruction and anaemia. The patient was submitted to colonoscopy, oesophagogastro-duodenoscopy and small bowel enema. At laparotomy, multiple intussusceptions were found and we conducted a combined surgical-endoscopic approach. Most of the polyps were identified and removed endoscopically (snare polypectomy). Five enterotomies were performed

[Polyps (single or multiple) and juvenile polyposis].

The authors underline the important aspects of juvenile familial polyposis (JFP), a disease transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. A case of JFP characterized by the presence of hundreds of polyps in the colo-rectal intestinal tract, is analyzed. The single juvenile polyp, multiple polyps (=/>5 polyps) and the sporadic form are examined. These are mucous hamartomas which can undergo neoplastic transformation (in carcinoma in 68% of untreated cases), a behaviour similar to that of adenomatous polyps. They differ from the later due to the following features: epidemiology (earlier appearance

Colorectal adenomas produce lysozyme.

Lysozyme is an innate non-immunologic antibacterial enzyme produced by the Paneth cells of the upper intestinal tract. Lysozyme is not normally secreted in the lower intestinal tract. Previous reports indicate, however, that lysozyme may be secreted by colorectal neoplasias. The aim was to audit lysozyme expression in colorectal diseases including neoplasias. For that purpose, sections were stained with lysozyme (Muramidase), Ki67 (MIB1) and CD 68. Intense lysozyme overexpression (+++) was compared among 177 colorectal tissues: 35 having normal mucosa, 20 regenerative mucosa in inflammatory bo

[Gastrointestinal inflammatory fibroid polyps. Clinical characteristics and follow-up in a series of 26 patients].

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is a protuberant lesion, located near the muscularis mucosae and composed of a proliferation of fusiform cells and conjunctive fibers surrounding capillaries and a variable inflammatory infiltrate. It is believed to be a poorly controlled inflammatory repair response. Our aim was to study the clinical, pathological and follow-up characteristics of a series of patients with IFP. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We studied 26 IFPs from 25 patients (16 women and 9 men) registered between 1985 and 2001 in a specific register of 3 centers in the city of Gerona (S

[Lipoma of the colon as an unusual cause of recurring partial intestinal occlusion. Clinical case and review of the literature].

A case of a symptomatic colonic lipoma causing recurrent abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction, not treated is reported. Lipomas are the most common mesenchymal benign tumors that can be found in the colon and are second as frequence only to the adenomatous polyps. In 65% of cases the lipomas are located in the large bowel and represent the most common cause of intestinal intussusception in the adult. Lipomas are most frequent in the right colon (40%-68%) an opposite distribution in comparison with adenocarcinomas and adenomatous polyps. When their diameter is more than 3 cm, lipomas becom

[Inflammatory fibroid polyps of the gastrointestinal tract].

Inflammatory fibroid polyps of the gastrointestinal tract represent a relatively rare entity. Although the histopathological classification, the etiology and the pathogenesis of this lesion remains unclear, the biological dignity is commonly understood as benign. Nevertheless, these polyps are able to cause gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction or intussusception which often provides the indication for surgical treatment. In endoscopical biopsies unexpected difficulties for the pathologist may arise from the fact that these uncommon lesions often show a submucosal growth pattern. W

[Cowden syndrome].

A patient with multiple hamartoma syndrome or Cowden's disease with multiple gastrointestinal polyps and malignant melanoma is presented. The syndrome is characterized by hamartomatous tumors of the skin, fibrocystic disease of the breasts, gastrointestinal polyps and disease of the thyroid gland such as goiter and adenoma. In addition, other abnormalities and malformations occur in the skeletal system, central nervous system and urogenital tract. Recognition of this syndrome is important because of the association with malignant tumors of the breast and thyroid gland and with malignant melano

[Is gastroscopic polypectomy a diagnostic necessity? Results of a prospective study].

In a prospective study 76 gastric polyps (of 67 patients) were investigated consecutively by forceps biopsy and by endoscopic polypectomy. The results were compared histologically. Differences arose only in the group where focal foveolar hyperplasia had been diagnosed by forceps biopsy. Of these, 33 remained with the same diagnosis on microscopic assessment of the whole polyp, 14 were hyperplasiogenic polyps, 7 fibrous-inflammatory polyps and in one case there were cysts of the glandular body. A clinically relevant difference was observed in only one polyp where biopsy in toto showed a borderl

Ileo-colic intussusception: a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults.

Adult intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction characterized by the telescoping of one segment of the intestine into another. Unlike in children, adult intussusception accounts for a small proportion of intestinal obstructions and is usually associated with an identifiable cause, such as malignancy or polyps. We present a case of ileo-colic intussusception in an elderly female, confirmed on abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging, and successfully treated with emergency laparotomy and segmental bowel resection. Histology identified a benign lipomatous polyp as the lead poin
