The clinical use of the naso-gastric duodenal mercury tip sump tube in abdominal surgery and in the management of intestinal obstruction.

A naso-gastric duodenal mercury tip weighted sump tube has been developed that will efficaciously decompress small bowel in cases of paralytic ileus, partial or complete mechanical obstruction, and can easily be introduced into the duodenum by a nurse, house staff or attending physician. The tube also may be used for diagnostic purposes to obtain gastrointestinal, pancreatic or biliary secretions.

A brief review of the adult respiratory distress syndrome.

The adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is seen with increasing frequency. It is associated with a variety of conditions even in the absence of preexisting pulmonary diseases. The treatment often includes intubation, using positive-end expiratory pressure (PEEP), and other ancillary support. The mortality rate is high, and physicians caring for such patients should be on guard for disseminated intravascular coagulation, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and infection.

Retention of nondeflating balloon in small bowel. Case report and review of the literature.

Intubation of the upper gastrointestinal tract with balloon catheters has a role in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of many gastrointestinal conditions. A potential complication of this procedure, albeit rare, is failure of the balloon to deflate, thereby preventing removal of the intestinal tube. We describe a case where this problem arose and the series of maneuvers that were attempted to resolve it. Attempts at overdistending the balloon, reaching it via endoscopy, and ultrasound localization of the balloon all failed. The tube was successfully removed following CT-guided percutaneou

Pulmonary and laryngeal tuberculosis in a 25-weeks' gestation parturient, diagnosed after failed tracheal intubation.

A pregnant woman at 25weeks of gestation was diagnosed with laryngeal tuberculosis following a failed intubation for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Laryngeal tuberculosis represents approximately 1% of all cases of tuberculosis in the United States and presents a unique diagnostic challenge, because accompanying laryngeal changes are both varied and nonspecific. This report highlights both the challenges of the pregnant airway and the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal tuberculosis.

Complications of acute respiratory failure.

Acute respiratory failure is frequently fatal. Attempts to decrease mortality must include attention to pulmonary and extrapulmonary complications. Pulmonary complications include pulmonary emboli, barotrauma, fibrosis, and pneumonia. Swan-Ganz catheters, tracheal intubation, and mechanical ventilation can also result in pulmonary complications. Extra-pulmonary complications such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, renal failure, infection, and thrombocytopenia may increase mortality. Early diagnosis, aggressive treatment, and prophylaxis of complications should increase survival.

Psychological Effects of Nasogastric Tube (NGT) in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

AIM: After the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for intensive nutritional care in patients affected with anorexia nervosa (AN) increased. The use of NGT was often used to overcome renutrition difficulties. This systematic review explores the evidence concerning the psychological effects of an enteral nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding on patients with AN. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted on electronic databases, including papers from January 2010 to December 2023. The keywords used combined anorexia nervosa, NGT, nasogastric tube, and tube feeding, with MeSH terms

Superiority of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Over Nasogastric Feeding for Stroke-Induced Severe Dysphagia: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND Patients with dysphagia due to stroke may require enteral feeding using either a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube or a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. This study aimed to compare outcomes from NG tube and PEG tube feeding in 40 patients with severe dysphagia due to stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 40 patients admitted to the hospital from April 2019 to December 2022 due to severe stroke dysphagia, who were divided into the gastrostomy group (20 patients) and the nasogastric feeding group (20 patients) in accordance with the random number table method. [Nasogastric tube obstruction due to enteral feeding bezoar].

Introduction: the administration of enteral nutrition through a nasogastric tube can cause potentially serious complications. We present a case of esophageal obstruction due to an enteral nutrition bezoar. Case report: the 77-year-old patient was admitted to our center in the intensive care unit for COVID pneumonia. The patient received enteral nutrition through a nasogastric tube (NGT), presenting difficulty passing it after a month of follow-up. After removal of the tube and attached to it, an esophageal mold for enteral nutrition was extracted. Later, a solvent solution is administered thro

Nasogastric tube care and flushing in a Portuguese general medicine ward: a best practice implementation project.

OBJECTIVES: To implement evidence-based practice related to care and flushing of nasogastric tubes inserted for feeding, in a general medicine ward. INTRODUCTION: Nasogastric tube feeding is a widely used nutritional support form. Although performed by qualified professionals, it is not a harm-free intervention. Progression to the trachea during initial insertion, aspiration of gastric contents, improper position for patient feeding, and/or a blocked tube are examples of problems that can occur. METHODS: The project used JBI's methodological approach of the Clinical Evidence System and Getti

Bedside Methods for Transpyloric Feeding Tube Insertion in Hospitalized Children: A Systematic Review of Randomized and non-Randomized Trials.

PROBLEM: Enteral nutrition is a critical component of therapy for many hospitalized children. Some children, especially those with critical illness, require post-pyloric enteral nutrition, but placement of post-pyloric feeding tubes poses challenges, necessitating costly fluoroscopy procedures and delaying initiation of enteral nutrition. There is no established standard method for pediatric transpyloric tube placement at the bedside. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We searched for trials that assessed the efficacy of methods for transpyloric tube placement at the bedside. Studies that evaluated gastri

Integrated real-time imaging system, 'IRIS', Kangaroo feeding tube: a guide to placement and image interpretation.

BACKGROUND: Lung complications occur in 0.5% of the millions of blind tube placements. This represents a major health burden. Use of a Kangaroo feeding tubes with an 'integrated real-time imaging system' ('IRIS' tube) may pre-empt such complications. We aimed to produce a preliminary operator guide to IRIS tube placement and interpretation of position. METHODS: In a single centre, IRIS tubes were prospectively placed in intensive care unit patients. Characteristics of tube placement and visualised anatomy were recorded in each organ to produce a guide. RESULTS: Of 45 patients having one tube

Misplacement of a nasogastric feeding tube: a case report.

Nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion is widely used for enteral feeding. After blind insertion of a NGT, confirmation of correct placement prior to feeding using reliable methods is mandatory. NGT misplacement in the respiratory tract can lead to serious complications. We report a case of a patient with dysphagia and malnutrition that needed enteral feeding as nutritional support. A NGT was blindly inserted, and its gastric position was confirmed through air insufflation and epigastric auscultation. Enteral feeding was initiated. Few hours later, the patient presented with respiratory distress. An

Validation of sonographic assistance for placement of a nasogastric tube in pediatric patients.

PURPOSE: Enteral access via nasogastric tube (NGT) placement can be essential in the provision of care in pediatric patients. Methods exist to confirm correct placement with success rates between 80% and 85%. Radiographic confirmation remains the "gold-standard," however; it exposes patients to ionizing radiation and fails to provide "real-time" information. In this study, we determined the feasibility of using sonography to assist in the placement of NGT insertions in pediatric patients that have difficulty cooperating. METHODS: Thirty patients requiring NGT placement were stratified into th
