Effects of polychlorinated biphenyls exposure on physical growth from birth to childhood and adolescence: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Given that their traditional lifestyle and diet still relies on fish and other marine species for sustenance, the Inuit are highly exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and PCBs are increasingly linked to obesity. However, evidence is not consistent regarding which periods of exposure are most relevant. In this study, we examine whether in utero, childhood, and adolescent exposure to PCBs are related to physical growth at adolescence. METHOD: Inuit adolescents from Canada (N=212) enrolled in a prospective longitudinal cohort study since birth were assessed for height, w

The paradox of the carnitine palmitoyltransferase type Ia P479L variant in Canadian Aboriginal populations.

Investigation of seven patients from three families suspected of a fatty acid oxidation defect showed mean CPT-I enzyme activity of 5.9+/-4.9 percent of normal controls. The families, two Inuit, one First Nation, live in areas of Canada geographically very distant from each other. The CPT1 and CPT2 genes were fully sequenced in 5 of the patients. All were homozygous for the same P479L mutation in a highly conserved region of the CPT1 gene. Two patients from the first family were also homozygous for the CPT2 F352C polymorphism in the CPT2 gene. Genotyping the patients and their family members c

Analysis of chemical exposures in racial populations in Canada: An investigation based on the Canadian health measures survey.

Despite demonstrated disparities in environmental chemical exposures by racial identity, no Canadian study has systematically assessed the feasibility of using a nationally representative dataset to examine differences in chemical concentrations by race. We assessed the feasibility and constraints of analysing chemical exposures in racial populations, including visible minorities and populations of Indigenous identity, using biomonitoring data collected through the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). Our primary objectives were to assess the ability to 1) generate geometric means and perce

Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the intraoral minor salivary gland: A case report.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of salivary gland origin is a rare malignant tumor with morphological characteristics identical to those of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It has a marked racial predilection for Inuit and Southeast Asian populations. An association between LEC and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has previously been reported. LEC most frequently affects the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular glands. To the best of our knowledge, only three LECs arising from the minor salivary gland have been previously described in the English language literature. The c

Canadian Wildfires: A Plague on Societies Well-Being, Inequities and Cohesion.

Extreme heat and wildfires have health implications for everyone; however, minority and low-income populations are disproportionately negatively affected due to generations of social inequities and discriminatory practices. Indigenous people in Canada are at a higher risk of many chronic respiratory diseases, as well as other non-communicable diseases and hospitalization, compared to the general population. These wildfires occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated how disruptive compounding disasters can be, putting minority populations such as First Nations, Metis, and Inuit tr

An outbreak of foodborne botulism in Ontario.

Botulism is a rare paralytic illness resulting from a potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. Botulism in Canada is predominately due to C botulinum type E and affects mainly the First Nations and Inuit populations. The most recent outbreak of botulism in Ontario was in Ottawa in 1991 and was caused by C botulinum type A. We report an outbreak of foodborne type B botulism in Ontario, which implicated home-canned tomatoes. The outbreak was characterized by mild symptoms in two cases and moderately severe illness in one case. The investigation shows the importance of considering the

Exposure to benzene, toluene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Nunavimmiut aged 16 years and over (Nunavik, Canada) - Qanuilirpitaa 2017 survey.

There are numerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that Inuit may be exposed to from combustion, cooking, heating, vehicle exhaust, active and passive smoking and other local sources of contaminants such as oil spills or open-air burning in landfills. To better assess the levels of exposure to these non-persistent chemicals, we measured a suite of benzene, toluene (two VOCs) and PAHs metabolites in pooled urine samples from youth and adults aged 16 years old and over who participated in the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 Inuit Health Survey (Q2017), a populat

Reclaiming Indigenous birth: research framework to assess the economic costs and outcomes of obstetric evacuation and experiences of Indigenous midwifery in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples) have distinct traditional knowledge and practices for pregnancy and birth, and these have sustained healthy and thriving Indigenous communities for millennia. Indigenous midwives historically held a leading role as primary providers of sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, colonial practices severely disrupted the role of Indigenous midwives and the transfer of their knowledge from generation to generation. The obstetric evacuation policy in Canada requires people who live in rural and remote location

Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) as sentinels for parasitic zoonoses, Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella nativa, in the northeastern Canadian Arctic.

Outbreaks of Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. have been recurring for decades among Inuit of Nunavik, northeastern Canada. Contact with wildlife has been identified as a risk factor for Inuit exposure to T. gondii, but reservoirs have yet to be confirmed based on direct detection of DNA or organism. Similarly, little is known about the occurrence of Trichinella spp. in wildlife species of Nunavik other than walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) and bears (Ursus americanus, Ursus maritimus). Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were targeted as possible sentinels for T. gondii and Trichinella spp. because of their

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in the intestinal contents of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada.

The prevalence of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. was determined for ringed and bearded seals harvested for food in the Nunavik region in northern Quebec, Canada. Flow cytometric results demonstrated that G. duodenalis was present in the intestinal contents of 80% of the ringed seals and 75% of the bearded seals tested, while Cryptosporidium spp. were present in 9% of the ringed seals and none of the bearded seals. Prevalence of both parasites was highest in animals less than 1 yr of age. Giardia sp. isolates from ringed seals were identified as G. duodenalis Assemblage B, which is

Trichinosis in the Canadian Arctic: report of five outbreaks and a new clinical syndrome.

Trichinosis is a serious but understudied medical problem in the Arctic. Forty-nine consecutive cases in the Inuit population of northeastern Canada are described. Most developed the disease after eating raw walrus, and the clinical presentation of most of these cases differed from previously reported descriptions of classic trichinosis due to Trichinella spiralis. Unlike the classic syndrome of a brief period of diarrhea followed by fever, myalgia, muscle weakness, and edema, the most common presentation in these cases was a prolonged diarrhea without fever and with brief muscle symptoms. Diabetic foot complications among Indigenous peoples in Canada: a scoping review through the PROGRESS-PLUS equity lens.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous peoples in Canada face a disproportionate burden of diabetes-related foot complications (DRFC), such as foot ulcers, lower extremity amputations (LEA), and peripheral arterial disease. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of DRFC among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in Canada, incorporating an equity lens. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted based on Arksey and O'Malley refined by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The PROGRESS-Plus framework was utilized to extract data and incorporate an equity lens. A critical appraisal was perf

Human population dynamics and Yersinia pestis in ancient northeast Asia.

We present genome-wide data from 40 individuals dating to c.16,900 to 550 years ago in northeast Asia. We describe hitherto unknown gene flow and admixture events in the region, revealing a complex population history. While populations east of Lake Baikal remained relatively stable from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age, those from Yakutia and west of Lake Baikal witnessed major population transformations, from the Late Upper Paleolithic to the Neolithic, and during the Bronze Age, respectively. We further locate the Asian ancestors of Paleo-Inuits, using direct genetic evidence. Last, we repor

Anterior chamber depth and primary angle-closure glaucoma: an evolutionary perspective.

Anterior chamber depth is an inheritable trait which is affected by age, gender and race. Over 30 years ago, Alsbirk proposed that the shallow anterior chamber, which was typical of the Greenlandic Inuit, and which brings the iris in proximity to the cornea, may have evolved as a thermoregulatory adaptation to resist corneal freezing. Here, this hypothesis is revisited. Recent population genetic data which provide evidence for migration patterns of early humans are discussed and the notions of natural selection and ocular adaptation to cold climates are considered. Problems with the hypothesis

Arctic trichinosis presenting as prolonged diarrhea.

We describe an outbreak of trichinosis after the consumption of raw walrus meat in 10 Inuit inhabitants of a northern community. During the presentation of the illness, diarrhea was found in all subjects and was the dominant symptom in 8 of the 10 cases. Myalgia (60%) and muscle weakness (50%) were much less prominent complaints. The diarrhea was characteristically prolonged, lasting up to 14 wk (average 5.8 wk), as opposed to comparatively short episodes of myalgia (average 5.4 days) and muscle weakness (average 4.5 days). Prolonged diarrhea with little or no muscle symptomatology in an epide

Lack of evidence of hepatitis D (delta) infection in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Epidemiologic knowledge of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is limited. A seroepidemiologic study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the infection in Newfoundland and Labrador. Between October 1983 and October 1985 over 200 people were recognized through routine serodiagnosis and screening as having hepatitis B seromarkers. A total of 223 serum samples from 186 of these people were tested for anti-HDV. The subjects were mainly asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen or patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B from the native Indian and Inuit and the non-native popula
