MeHg biomagnification by the phantom midge Chaoborus in relation to MeHg concentrations in their prey and its migratory behavior was investigated in two Canadian Precambrian Shield lakes. Three Chaoborus species with contrasted migratory behavior were collected in a fishless and a fish-inhabited lake. All species accumulated MeHg through their ontogenic development. In the lake inhabited by fish, all instars of Chaoborus punctipennis displayed a marked migratory behavior and were unable to biomagnify MeHg, whereas in the fishless lake, Chaoborus americanus and Chaoborus trivittatus biomagnifie

After infection with the digenetic trematode Echinostoma paraensei, hemolymph of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata contains lectins comprised of 65-kDa subunits that precipitate polypeptides secreted by E. paraensei intramolluscan larvae. Comparable activity is lacking in hemolymph of uninfected snails. Three different cDNAs with sequence similarities to peptides derived from the 65-kDa lectins were obtained and unexpectedly found to encode fibrinogen-related proteins (FREPs). These FREPs also contained regions with sequence similarity to Ig superfamily members. B. glabrata has at least five FRE

Submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) provides essential habitat and food to numerous coastal invertebrate species. In the eutrophic Baltic Sea, fast-growing drifting algae form extensive mats that can negatively impact SAV. However, these mats also offer additional habitat and food to epifauna. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of SAV and filamentous mats on epifaunal communities in shallow soft-bottom habitats around Gotland, Sweden, in the central Baltic Sea. We used generalised linear models (GLMs) to evaluate the influence of SAV vertical structure, biomass and macrophyte speci

Pest management strategies to reduce sea lice infestations in the salmon aquaculture industry include in-feed treatments with ivermectin (IVM) and SLICE® (active ingredient [AI] emamectin benzoate [EMB]), which can result in local contamination of the environment. These compounds partition to sediments, have moderate persistence, and may pose a risk to non-target benthic organisms. The sub-lethal effects of EMB, IVM and a combination of both (EMB/IVM) on the benthic amphipod Eohaustorius estuarius and polychaete Nereis virens at environmentally relevant sediment concentrations were examined in

This review examines the presence and evolution of thyroid-like systems in selected aquatic invertebrates to determine the potential use of these organisms in screens for vertebrate thyroid hormone axis disrupting chemicals (THADCs). Such a screen might support the phasing out of some vertebrate testing. Although arthropods including crustaceans do not contain a functional thyroid signaling system, elements of such a system exist in the aquatic phyla mollusks, echinoderms, tunicates, and cephalochordates. These phyla can synthesize thyroid hormone, which has been demonstrated in some groups to

DNA metabarcoding is an emerging tool used to quantify diet in environments and consumer groups where traditional approaches are unviable, including small-bodied invertebrate taxa. However, metabarcoding of small taxa often requires DNA extraction from full body parts (without dissection), and it is unclear whether surface contamination from body parts alters presumed diet presence or diversity. We examined four different measures of diet (presence, rarefied read abundance, richness, and species composition) for a terrestrial invertebrate consumer (the spider Heteropoda venatoria) both collecte

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) inflicts severe economic losses on global aquaculture and poses a grave threat to the farming of shrimp, crabs, and other invertebrates. This review synthesizes the molecular pathways through which WSSV infection induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the host; examines the dual role of oxidative stress, wherein moderate ROS contribute to antiviral defense while excessive ROS drive oxidative injury; and, drawing on the threshold effect concept established in mammalian studies, evaluates its applicability and limitations as a working hypothesis in i

Marine invertebrates harbor diverse bacterial communities that contribute to host defense by producing antibacterial compounds. In this study, 258 cultivable bacterial isolates from corals (Porites panamensis, P. lobata), the sea urchin Echinometra vanbrunti, and the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi were screened against aquaculture and human pathogens. 14% (37 isolates) exhibited antibacterial activity, predominantly from E. vanbrunti and M. leidyi. Multiple assays revealed strong, broad-spectrum inhibition, particularly against aquaculture pathogens such as Listonella anguillarum, Photobacterium

Mercury is a toxic environmental contaminant that is known to undergo long range transport, resulting in deposition in remote and pristine ecosystems. Increases in methylmercury concentration at low trophic levels may result in greater risk to top predators in food webs. As a result, low trophic level invertebrates are important sentinels for ecosystem contamination and overall ecosystem health. Big Meadow Bog, located on Brier Island, Nova Scotia, is a disturbed wetland habitat that was subject to colonization by herring gulls (Larus argentatus), resulting in significant phosphate nutrient in

Host-parasite interactions represent an evolutionary arms race, with parasites evolving strategies to exploit host resources, and hosts deploying mechanisms to resist or tolerate infection. Unlike vertebrates, which possess a sophisticated immune system, invertebrates rely entirely on innate immunity to combat pathogens. Yet, the molecular underpinnings and life-history consequences of immune activation remain little understood in non-insect invertebrates. Here, we combine life-history trait analysis with transcriptomics to investigate immune responses in an aquatic invertebrate exposed to a n

Echinoderms exhibit a wide range of reproductive strategies as adaptations to variable environments. The processes of gonadal development, germ cell differentiation, and spermatogenesis in echinoderms are crucial physiological processes that warrant further in-depth exploration. This review systematically summarizes research from early basic sciences to recent studies on male gonadal development and spermatogenesis, encompassing morphology, histology, physiology, cell biology, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology. We introduce the structural and cellular similarities and differences

Neuroanatomical information on neuropeptidergic neurons provides crucial clues to understanding the functions of neuropeptides and the cerebral structure-function relationships. In this study, we constructed comprehensive two- and three-dimensional atlases of 23 neuropeptides in the central nervous system (CNS) of an invertebrate chordate, Ciona robusta, at the single-cell level using a mass spectrometry imaging workflow. The neuropeptidomic atlases revealed that the cerebral ganglion is divided into three functional areas, dorso-rostral, dorso-caudal, and ventral areas. Particularly, the dist

Most mycoplasmal infections result in chronic, clinically silent disease. In direct contrast, Mycoplasma alligatoris elicits a fulminant, multisystem disease in the natural host, Alligator mississippiensis (American alligator). The goals of the study were to better understand the disease in the natural host and to determine if the invertebrate model G. mellonella could serve as a surrogate alternate host. The survival of alligators infected intratracheally was dose dependent (p=0.0003), ranging from no mortality (102 CFU) to 100% mortality (108 CFU), with 60% mortality at the 104 and 105 CFU i

A global increase in offshore windfarm development is critical to our renewable energy future. Yet, widespread construction plans have generated substantial concern for impacts to co-occurring organisms and the communities they form. Pile driving construction, prominent in offshore windfarm development, produces among the highest amplitude sounds in the ocean creating widespread concern for a diverse array of taxa. However, studies addressing ecologically key species are generally lacking and most research is disparate, failing to integrate across response types (e.g., behavior, physiology, an

Abrasion of tire wear is one of the largest sources of microplastics to the environment. Although most tire particles settle into soils, studies on their ecotoxicological impacts on the terrestrial environment are scarce. Here, the effects of tire particles (<180 μm) on three ecologically relevant soil invertebrate species, the enchytraeid worm Enchytraeus crypticus, the springtail Folsomia candida and the woodlouse Porcellio scaber, were studied. These species were exposed to tire particles spiked in soil or in food at concentrations of 0.02%, 0.06%, 0.17%, 0.5% and 1.5% (w/w). Tire particles

A novel bacterial strain, XY-99T, was isolated from the epidermis of a marine invertebrate of the genus Onchidium from seawater of the South China Sea. The cells of the strain were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and oval-shaped (0.8-1.0 µm wide and 1.0-1.5 µm long) without a flagellum. The strain grew at temperatures of 15-37 °C (optimum, 35-37 °C), at pH 5.5-9.5 (optimum 7.5), and at NaCl concentrations of 0-12.0 % (w/v) (optimum 1.5-3.0 %). The major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. The predomina

Degradation rates of two widely used pesticides were assessed, and acute and chronic effects on a standard invertebrate species investigated. An herbicide (Montana®) and fungicide (Bravo500®) formulations were investigated and results were compared to the isolated active substances of each formulation (glyphosate and chlorothalonil, respectively). Tests were performed using the invertebrate Folsomia candida as test species and an agricultural natural soil. Degradation rate tests were determined under aerobic conditions at 20 ± 2 °C, using an ecologically relevant concentration of 5 mg (a.i.) k

We examined methylmercury (MeHg) bioavailability in four of the most predominant wetland habitats in California's Central Valley agricultural region during the spring and summer: white rice, wild rice, permanent wetlands, and shallowly-flooded fallow fields. We sampled MeHg and total mercury (THg) concentrations in two aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa at the inlets, centers, and outlets of four replicated wetland habitats (8 wetlands total) during two time periods bounding the rice growing season and corresponding to flood-up and pre-harvest (96 total samples). In general, THg concentrations (me

Hormone level differences are generally accepted as the primary cause for sexual dimorphism in animal and human development. Levels of low molecular weight metabolites also differ between men and women in circulating amino acids, lipids and carbohydrates and within brain tissue. While investigating the metabolism of blue crab tissues using Phosphorus-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, we discovered that only the male blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) contained a phosphorus compound with a chemical shift well separated from the expected phosphate compounds. Spectra obtained from male gills were readi

BACKGROUND: There is a major societal concern relating to the addictive properties of analgesic drugs such as morphine with regard to alleviating pain. Because of this, alternative methods of pain relief are, and have been, actively pursued. An extremely promising method for treatment of low to moderate levels of chronic pain in humans is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
MATERIAL/METHODS: All experiments utilized the invertebrate marine bivalve mollusc Mytilus edulis pedal ganglia. TENS was achieved using a stimulation apparatus developed by Professor Han of Peking Universi
