We describe a method for perfusion of a working isolated rat heart with washed erythrocytes suspended in a Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer containing bovine albumin (fraction V). With washed pig red cells, as hematocrit was varied between 0 and 40%, coronary flow (CF), aortic flow (AF), external work (W), and myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) were measured. The venom of the common Indian catfish P. canius Hamilton (locally called 'Kanmagur') was examined for its pharmacodynamic activity. The LD50 of the venom in mice was found to be 3.9 mg/kg (ip). A simple and efficient procedure is described for the preparation of cardiolipin sodium salt from beef heart. A crude phospholipid fraction is isolated by chloroform-methanol extraction of the homogenized tissue, followed by acetone precipitation and reprecipitation in 4% aqueous CaCl2-methanol.
