Corticospinal excitability following repetitive voluntary movement.

Post-exercise cortical depression (PED) is induced by non-fatiguing finger movement. Because the type of exercise that causes PED remains unclear, we conducted two experiments to clarify which exercise factors induce PED. Fifteen healthy participants performed repetitive abduction movements of the right index finger at 2.0 Hz (simple rhythmic task) and 0.2 Hz (adjustment task) for 6 min each in experiment 1. Twelve healthy participants performed repetitive and isometric abduction contractions of the right index finger at 1.0 Hz with visuomotor tracking (visuomotor task) and without visuomotor

Evidence for cholinergically mediated vasodilation at the beginning of isometric exercise in humans.

Vasodilation occurs in the nonexercising forearm at the beginning of isometric handgrip despite activation of sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflexes. The mechanism of this response remains unclear. In 33 normal humans, age 24 +/- 1 years (mean +/- SEM), we measured mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and forearm blood flow (plethysmography) in the nonexercising arm during sustained contralateral isometric handgrip at 30% maximal voluntary contraction. Sympathetic nerve activity to calf muscles (microneurography) was also measured in 15 subjects. Handgrip resulted in increases in arterial pressur

Catenoid shape of the interventricular septum: possible cause of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.

Previous studies have shown that asymmetric septal hypertrophy (ASH) may occur in embryonic and malformed hearts and that muscle cell disarray is found in myocardium that contracts isometrically. To account for the characteristic ASH and septal muscle fiber disarray of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS), we postulated that a catenoid shape of the septum, i.e., net zero curvature, would have the mechanics required to produce IHSS. Accordingly, hearts from eight autopsied patients with IHSS were studied for curvature and thickness of free walls and septum, and they were compared t

External rotation of the foot position during plantarflexion increases non-uniform motions of the Achilles tendon.

The medial (GM) and lateral gastrocnemius (GL) muscles enroll to different subparts of the Achilles tendon to form their respective subtendons. The relative gastrocnemii activations during submaximal plantarflexion contraction depend on the position of the foot in the horizontal plane: with toes-in, GL activation increases and GM activation decreases, compared to toes-out. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether horizontal foot position during submaximal isometric plantarflexion contraction differently affects the subtendons within the Achilles tendon in terms of their (i) leng

A validation of techniques using surface EMG signals from dynamic contractions to quantify muscle fatigue during repetitive tasks.

The purpose of the current study was to determine the validity of quantifying biceps brachii fatigue with dynamic measures of surface electromyo-graphic (EMG) mean power frequency (MPF) through comparisons with the well-established isometric methodology. Subjects performed repetitive elbow flexion-extension movements with a hand held load of 7 kg until volitional exhaustion. Elbow joint angle and biceps brachii EMG signals were recorded continuously during the fatiguing movement (in 250-ms segments) and during isometric, isotonic contractions (in 1000-ms segments) performed at a 90 degrees fle

Effects of phenylpropanolamine and isometric exercise on blood pressure.

The effects of a single dose of phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and isometric handgrip exercise were studied to determine whether the combination increases blood pressure more than either one alone. Six normotensive subjects performed 2 min of exercise at 30 percent of maximal effort before, 1 and 2 h after PPA 37.5 mg (immediate release formulation) or placebo. PPA alone increased the sitting systolic blood pressure at 2 h (PPA 7.2 +/- 8.2 mmHg, placebo - 1.8 +/- 3.4 mmHg, P = 0.016) but did not increase diastolic blood pressure. Handgrip exercise increased systolic and diastolic blood pressures to

Extensor/flexor ratio of neck muscle strength and electromyographic activity of individuals with migraine: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Neck pain is considered a common characteristic of migraine attacks. The relationship between neck pain and migraine can be explained by central sensitization of the trigeminocervical complex, where superior cervical afferents and the trigeminal nerve converge. However, few studies have evaluated motor control of cervical muscles in individuals with migraine. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to determine the extensor/flexor ratio of neck muscle strength and electromyographic activity during a test of maximal voluntary isometric contraction and craniocervical flexion in indiv

Experimental pain sensitivity in women with temporomandibular disorders and pain-free controls: the relationship to orofacial muscular contraction and cardiovascular responses.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain may result both from a generalized hypersensitivity to acute pain, suggestive of central sensitization processes, and dysfunction of the endogenous pain regulatory system. One purpose of this study was to compare experimental pain sensitivity at several anatomic sites in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients and pain-free controls during baseline and after standardized mechanical load of the orofacial region. A second purpose was to compare the pain-modulating effects of cardiovascular responses in TMD patients and pain-free controls. METHODS: Experimental pain was

Eccentric contractions disrupt FKBP12 content in mouse skeletal muscle.

Strength deficits associated with eccentric contraction-induced muscle injury stem, in part, from impaired voltage-gated sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) release. FKBP12 is a 12-kD immunophilin known to bind to the SR Ca(2+) release channel (ryanodine receptor, RyR1) and plays an important role in excitation-contraction coupling. To assess the effects of eccentric contractions on FKBP12 content, we measured anterior crural muscle (tibialis anterior [TA], extensor digitorum longus [EDL], extensor hallucis longus muscles) strength and FKBP12 content in pellet and supernatant fractions after ce

The stop-flow technique: a way to measure detrusor strength.

Maximum intravesical isometric pressure, obtained by stopping the urinary flow in progress, measures detrusor strength and allows an accurate evaluation of bladder contraction. Micturition studies were performed on 7 normal subjects and 48 patients with urinary obstruction, enuresis, neurogenic vesical dysfunction or stress incontinence. In the case of obstruction maximum isometric pressure appears to relate to the degree of detrusor compensation and allows a prognosis as to the future of detrusor function after the obstruction is removed. An unexpected large proportion of patients with enures

Differential patterns of muscle modification in women with episodic and chronic tension-type headache revealed using surface electromyographic analysis.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is a prototypical disorder in which muscular factors play a key role in the pathogenesis. This study was designed to understand muscular dysfunction in patients with episodic (ETTH) and chronic TTH (CTTH) using surface electromyography analysis (SEMG). Women with frequent ETTH (n = 14), CTTH (n = 14) and age-matched controls (n = 13) were recruited. SEMG data were recorded from the masseter, sternocleidomastoid, and upper trapezius muscles during maximum voluntary contraction and sustained voluntary isometric clenching, the neck flexion endurance test and shoulder e

Effect of angiotensin II-induced arterial hypertension on the voltage-dependent contractions of mouse arteries.

Arterial hypertension (AHT) affects the voltage dependency of L-type Ca(2+) channels in cardiomyocytes. We analyzed the effect of angiotensin II (AngII)-induced AHT on L-type Ca(2+) channel-mediated isometric contractions in conduit arteries. AHT was induced in C57Bl6 mice with AngII-filled osmotic mini-pumps (4 weeks). Normotensive mice treated with saline-filled osmotic mini-pumps were used for comparison. Voltage-dependent contractions mediated by L-type Ca(2+) channels were studied in vaso-reactive studies in vitro in isolated aortic and femoral arteries by using extracellular K(+) concent

Hamstring fascicle behavior during leg curl exercises performed at varying knee joint angles and loading intensities in individuals with a history of unilateral hamstring injury: a randomized cross-over design study.

BACKGROUND: Shorter resting fascicle length of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) has been associated with a history and risk of hamstring strain injury (HSI). However, acute mid-region BFlh fascicle operating length under different knee joint angles and contraction intensities remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of knee joint angle and contraction intensity on acute mid-region BFlh fascicle operating length and to determine whether these responses differ between previously injured and uninjured limbs. METHODS: Fourteen male university athletes with a history of unilateral HSI

Acute effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on cortical dynamics and reflex activation.

Superimposing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on voluntary muscle contractions has shown the potential to improve motor performance even more than voluntary exercise alone. Nevertheless, the neurophysiological and neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this technique are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute responses in spinal excitability and brain activity following three conditions: NMES superimposed on isometric contractions (NMES + ISO), passive NMES, and voluntary isometric contractions (ISO). Each condition involved 15 intermittent ankle plantar-fl

Residual force enhancement is reduced in permeabilized fiber bundles from mdm muscles.

Residual force enhancement (RFE) is the increase in steady-state force after active stretch relative to the force during isometric contraction at the same final length. The muscular dystrophy with myositis (mdm) mutation in mice, characterized by a small deletion in N2A titin, has been proposed to prevent N2A titin-actin interactions so that active mdm muscles are more compliant than wild type (WT). This decrease in active muscle stiffness is associated with reduced RFE. We investigated RFE in permeabilized soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) fiber bundles from WT and mdm mice. On
