Metatarsal strains are sufficient to cause fatigue fracture during cyclic overloading.

Human in vivo tibial strains during vigorous walking have not been found to exceed 1200 microstrains. These values are below those found in ex vivo studies (>3000 microstrains) to cause cortical bone fatigue failure, suggesting that an intermediate bone remodeling response may be associated with tibial stress fractures. Metatarsal stress fractures, however, often develop before there is time for such a response to occur. Simultaneous in vivo axial strains were measured at the mid diaphysis of the second metatarsal and the tibia in two subjects. Peak axial metatarsal compression strains and str

Effects of exercise training on aerobic fitness in children after open heart surgery.

Graded treadmill tests to maximal exercise were given to 24 children 1 year or more after open-heart surgery and to 26 age- and sex-matched controls, before and after 9 weeks of exercise training to test whether or not they could increase their aerobic fitness levels. The corrected cardiac lesions included tetralogy of Fallot, aortic stenosis, transposition of the great arteries and atrioventricular canal (AVC). Maximal exercise variables measured were heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), and workload (stage of exercise and time on treadmill). The results of the pretraining tests indicat

Sudden death during exercise: how real a hazard?

The literature dealing with sudden cardiac death in relation to exercise, particularly sport, is reviewed. The exact incidence of unexpected sudden cardiac death during physical activity in persons previously presumed healthy is difficult to determine due to the wide variation in reporting methods; by all indications, it is extremely low. The most common cardiac condition underlying sudden cardiac death in persons over age 30 years is, overwhelmingly, coronary artery disease. In younger athletes it is much less common and is usually due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital anomalies or i

Wearable Measurement of ECG Signals Based on Smart Clothing.

Smart clothing that can measure electrocardiogram (ECG) signals and monitor the health status of people meets the needs of our increasingly aging society. However, the conventional measurement of ECG signals is complicated and its electrodes can cause irritation to the skin, which makes the conventional measurement method unsuitable for applications in smart clothing. In this paper, a novel wearable measurement of ECG signals is proposed. There are only three ECG textile electrodes knitted into the fabric of smart clothing. The acquired ECG signals can be transmitted to a smartphone via Blueto

[Overuse damage in modern cross-country skiing].

The skating technique in cross-country skiing has changed the demands on the human body. The purpose of this study was to determine the stress on the locomotor system of young cross-country skiers, and whether overuse injuries result from this sport activity. 51 young cross-country skiers of the Swiss national team were interviewed and examined for problems and overuse injuries of the skeleton. The investigations were repeated yearly during a follow-up time of 3 years. Most of the painful irritations and most overuse injuries were localized in the femoropatellar joint and in the distal Achille

Exercise Training: The Holistic Approach in Cardiovascular Prevention.

Nowadays, there are robust clinical and pathophysiological evidence supporting the beneficial effects of physical activity on cardiovascular (CV) system. Thus, the physical activity is considered a key strategy for CV prevention. In fact, exercise training exerts favourable effects on all risk factors for CV diseases (i.e. essential hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc…). In addition, all training modalities such as the aerobic (continuous walking, jogging, cycling, etc.) or resistance exercise (weights), as well as the leisure-time phy

[Return to exercise after COVID-19. Statement of the Mexican Society of Cardiology].

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020; one consequence has been the increase in sedentary lifestyle and reduction of sports activity. Exercise benefits the immune defense system especially in older adults; it is recommended to keep a distance of 1.5 meters between people, and if walking or jogging is carried out, the space must be up to 5 and 10 meters respectively. The reported cases are mostly mild up to 80% and can be critical in up to 4.7%; the risk factors are well known, hypertension, diabetes and previous heart disease. Severe or critical case

[Exercise-induced anaphylaxis].

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) was defined for the first time in 1980. EIA is associated with different kind of exercise, although jogging is the most frequently reported. The clinical manifestations progress from itching, erythema and urticaria to some combination of cutaneous angioedema, gastrointestinal and laryngeal symptoms and signs of angioedema and vascular collapse. Mast cell participation in the pathogenesis of this syndrome has been proved by the finding of an elevated serum histamine level during experimentally-induced attacks and by cutaneous degranulation of mast cells with e

Factors affecting return to sports after eccentric rotational acetabular osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Although eccentric acetabular rotation osteotomy (ERAO) is an effective treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), there is little information about return to sports after ERAO. This study aimed to investigate 1) the patient factors that influence the return to sports after ERAO, 2) whether postoperative sports participation will affect future osteoarthritis progression. HYPOTHESIS: Some factors affect the return to sports after ERAO. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 503 patients who underwent ERAO from 1990 to 2010, 124 who had been continuously participating in sports preo

Circulating opioids: possible physiological roles in central nervous function.

Evidence is reviewed regarding the release of endorphins by such diverse conditions as stress, long distance running, acupuncture, sexual activity, suggestion and ritualistic dancing ceremonies. Additional evidence is cited regarding possible physiological roles of endorphins in antinociception, socialization, euphoria, some mental disorders, drive states and vegetative functions. The concentration of this latter type of evidence is on conditions during which endorphins seem to be exerting effects on a number of different systems together (for example, euphoria is almost always accompanied by

Understanding the design differences between multisegmented foot models and their impact on joint kinetic outcomes.

Multisegmented foot models (MSFMs) are used to capture data of specific regions of the foot instead of representing the foot as a single, rigid segment. It has been documented that different MSFMs do not yield the same joint kinematic data, but there is little information available regarding their use for kinetic analysis. We compared the moment and power at the tibiotalar, midtarsal, and metatarsophalangeal joints of four MSFMs using motion capture data of young adult runners during stance phase of barefoot walking and jogging. Of these models, three were previously validated: the Oxford, Mil

Polymeric piezoresistive airflow sensor to monitor respiratory patterns.

Monitoring human respiratory patterns is of great importance as it gives essential information for various medical conditions, e.g. sleep apnoea syndrome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, etc. Herein, we have developed a polymeric airflow sensor based on nanocomposites of vertically grown graphene nanosheets (VGNs) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and explored their applications in monitoring human respiration. The sensing performance of the VGNs/PDMS nanocomposite was characterized by exposing to a range of airflow rates (20-130 l min-1), and a linear performance with high

Design and evaluation of a modularized ankle-foot orthosis with quick release mechanism.

Ankle foot orthosis (AFO) stiffness affects ankle range of motion but can also provide energy storage and return to improve mobility. To perform multiple activities during the day, a person may want to change their AFO stiffness to meet their activity's demand. Carrying multiple AFOs and changing AFOs is inconvenient and could discourage users from engaging in multiple activities. This project will develop a new quick-release mechanism (QRM) that allows users to easily change posterior strut elements to change AFO stiffness. The QRM attaches to the AFO and requires no tools to operate. The pro

Effects of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

In this study, we assessed the effect of rehabilitation exercise after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). We performed a meta-analysis to determine the effects of exercise in patients after PCI. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, the Embase database, China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI), China Biology Medicine (CBM), and the Wanfang Database were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The key words used for the searches were PCI, exercise, walking, jogging, Tai Chi, and yoga. Six studies with

PLHI-MC10: A dataset of exercise activities captured through a triple synchronous medically-approved sensor.

Most human activity recognition datasets that are publicly available have data captured by using either smartphones or smartwatches, which are usually placed on the waist or the wrist, respectively. These devices obtain one set of acceleration and angular velocity in the x-, y-, and z-axis from the accelerometer and the gyroscope planted in these devices. The PLHI-MC10 dataset contains data obtained by using 3 BioStamp nPoint® sensors from 7 physically healthy adult test subjects performing different exercise activities. These sensors are the state-of-the-art biomedical sensors manufactured by

Assessment of ability to recall physical activity of several years ago.

In this study we assessed the reliability of recall of physical activity. Study participants were members of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adult Study (CARDIA) cohort who reported physical activity at each CARDIA examination. In this study, we asked 81 participants to recall activity patterns for the year prior to 2 to 3 years ago so that we could compare recalled activity patterns to those reported 2 to 3 years ago (labeled as "distantly recalled") as well as to activity patterns reported at the other CARDIA examinations. We found that distantly recalled physical activity patt

Growth of the metal-organic framework ZIF-67 on cellulosic substrates for triboelectric nanogenerators.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials with a metal ion coordinated to a ligand molecule. Recently, MOFs are being explored extensively for energy harvesting via triboelectrification. However, the majority of MOFs are brittle and hard to grow, thus leading to poor device stability and flexibility. Herein, the growth of ZIF-67 MOF is achieved on a cellulosic filter paper (CFP) and cotton fabric (CF) separately to use as the active layer in a TENG. The grown ZIF-67 MOFs were used for the fabrication of CFP-TENG and CF-TENG in vertical contact separation mode. The CF-TEN

Exercise after influenza or COVID-19 vaccination increases serum antibody without an increase in side effects.

Vaccination is an effective public health measure, yet vaccine efficacy varies across different populations. Adjuvants improve vaccine efficacy but often increase reactogenicity. An unconventional behavioral "adjuvant" is physical exercise at the time of vaccination. Here, in separate experiments, we examined the effect of 90-minute light- to moderate-intensity cycle ergometer or outdoor walk/jog aerobic exercise performed once after immunization on serum antibody response to three different vaccines (2009 pandemic influenza H1N1, seasonal influenza, and COVID-19). Exercise took place after in

A FE study on the effect of interference fit and coefficient of friction on the micromotions and interface gaps of a cementless PEEK femoral component.

The use of a more compliant material, such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), for a cementless femoral component is a potential solution to prevent aseptic loosening caused by peri-prosthetic stress-shielding. Long-term fixation of a cementless femoral component is achieved by a proper primary fixation of the bone-implant interface, which is influenced by the interference fit and frictional properties of the implant surface. This computational study investigates the sensitivity of micromotions and interface gaps of a cementless PEEK femoral component to the interference fit and coefficient of fri
