BACKGROUND: In the year 2015, more than one-third of neonatal deaths caused by prematurity was recorded worldwide. Despite different kinds of efforts taken at the global and local levels to reduce neonatal mortality, it remains high with low reduction rates, especially in low- and middle-income countries like sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Therefore, this study aims to assess the survival status and predictors of mortality among preterm neonates.
METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study was conducted on randomly selected 561 preterm neonates. Data were extracted from patient records using

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a multifaceted intervention for preterm and low birth weight infants and their parents. Short- and mid-term benefits of KMC on survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and the quality of mother-infant bonding were documented in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Colombia from 1993 to 1996. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the persistence of these results in young adulthood.
METHODS: From 2012 to 2014, a total of 494 (69%) of the 716 participants of the original RCT known to be alive were identified; 441 (62%

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a low-tech, highimpact intervention for preterm and low-birth-weight newborns. In 2019, Côte d'Ivoire opened its first KMC unit. We wanted to determine KMC's acceptability in Côte d'Ivoire after a year.
METHODS: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews in September 2020 at the Teaching Hospital of Treichville's first KMC unit. Mothers of preterm and low birth weight babies who received KMC were studied. Deductive (TFA-driven) framework analysis was performed. Coded using Nvivo 12.
RESULTS: KMC was acceptable overall. Mothers knew KMC's

One of the important challenges in surrogate pregnancies is the early bonding of genetic mother with her infant and the establishment of breastfeeding. A combination of pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods is often used for the induction of lactation. Reports of induced lactation in surrogacy are limited and scattered. In this report, we present a case of induced lactation and initiation of breastfeeding in preterm twins by the genetic mother, through her novel approach after a gestational surrogate pregnancy. Thematic approach of maternal account is summarized with context and rigor

INTRODUCTION: Of the 130 million babies born yearly, nearly 4 million die in the neonatal period. Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2014 places neonatal mortality rate at 22 deaths per 1,000 live births, well above the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 that aims to reduce these mortalities to at least 12 deaths per 1000 live births by 2030. The aim of the study was to assess maternal knowledge on selected components of essential newborn care: breastfeeding, cord care, immunisation, eye care and thermoregulation.
METHODS: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted on 380 post

RMNCH+A is a platform for delivering adolescent, maternal, newborn and child health in an integrated manner using a life cycle approach. The new initiatives under this strategy that would impact newborn health include antenatal corticosteroids in preterm labor, delayed clamping of cord at birth, skin-to-skin contact at birth and Kangaroo mother care, Family participatory care, Lactation management centers and care beyond newborn survival under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram. Even though the coverage of many of the existing initiatives has been moderately high, there are concerns about th

Each year approximately 20 million low birthweight babies are born globally. Prematurity is a leading cause of neonatal mortality in developing countries and results in 60%-80% of neonatal deaths. Neonatal mortality is the major contributor to under-5 mortality. According to Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2017-2018, neonatal mortality in Pakistan is 42 per 1000 live births and under-5 mortality is 74 per 1000 live births. One out of every 22 newborns dies in Pakistan, which is an alarming figure. Majority of these deaths are preventable. They can be prevented by well-trained midwives,

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about parental quality of life (QoL) is paramount to family-centred and integrated healthcare on prematurity, but evidence is limited. We aimed to explore mothers' and fathers' perspectives about their QoL 4 months after a very preterm childbirth.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional mixed methods study using a convergent design. Parents of very preterm infants were systematically recruited at all level III neonatal intensive care units in the Northern health region of Portugal for one year. Four months after childbirth, 61 mothers and 56 fathers filled-in the World Health

BACKGROUND: A preterm neonate is defined by the World Health Organization as a child delivered before 37 weeks of gestation. In low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia, preterm-related complications are serious health problems due to increases in the mortality and morbidity of newborns and children under 5 years of age. The aim of this study was to assess the time to neonatal mortality and its predictors among preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in northern Ethiopia, 2023/2024.
METHODS: An institution-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm infants. As there are no curative treatments for IVH, prevention is the cornerstone of management. A review of the pathogenesis of IVH suggests that interventions that limit disruptions in cerebral blood flow in the first week after birth are the most effective. Evidence-base strategies to prevent IVH after admission to the nursery include: (1) management of preterm respiratory distress syndrome with less invasive surfactant administration, permissive hypercapnia, and volume-targeted ventilation; (2) syste

BACKGROUND: Mental health issues are common in parents to preterm infants. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), skin-to-skin contact (SSC) as an avenue for parent-infant closeness may improve parental mental health. Few studies exist regarding its benefits when initiated immediately postbirth. The aim was to determine the effect of SSC for very preterm infants at birth on parents' mental health, by assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety within the first year.
METHODS: The Immediate Parent-Infant Skin-to-Skin Study was a randomized clinical trial conducted 2018-2021 at three NICUs

Introduction Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is an evidence-based, simple, time-tested, low-cost, and high-impact intervention for neonatal survival in hospitals and the community, particularly in resource-constrained areas. This has many beneficial effects on sick and stable low-birth-weight babies, lactating mothers, families, society, and the government. However, despite the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) recommendations for KMC, there is no satisfactory implementation of it in the community as well as in facilities. This study
