Red meat intake and cancer risk: a study in Italy.

Meat intake has been positively associated with risk of digestive tract cancers in several epidemiological studies, while data on the relation of meat intake with cancer risk at most other sites are inconsistent. The overall data set, derived from an integrated series of case-control studies conducted in northern Italy between 1983 and 1996, included the following incident, histologically confirmed neoplasms: oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus (n = 497), stomach (n = 745), colon (n = 828), rectum (n = 498), liver (n = 428), gallbladder (n = 60), pancreas (n = 362), larynx (n = 242), breast (n

PAX 8 expression in non-neoplastic tissues, primary tumors, and metastatic tumors: a comprehensive immunohistochemical study.

PAX 8 is a transcription factor that is essential for embryonic development of the kidney, Müllerian organs, and thyroid. It may also have a role in tumor development in these organs. The diagnostic utility of PAX 8 has not been comprehensively studied. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples for non-neoplastic tissues (n=1601), primary neoplasms (n=933), and metastatic neoplasms (n=496) were subjected to PAX 8 immunostain. In non-neoplastic tissues, PAX 8 was consistently noted in glomerular parietal epithelial cells, renal collecting ductal cells, atrophic renal tubular epithelial c

A Rare Case of a Huge Solitary Fibrous Tumor in the Kidney.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that is usually found in the thorax. Herein, we report a very unusual presentation in the kidney. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to present a unique rare case of the largest kidney SFT that was reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65 year-old-male patient who is known to have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) presenting with a huge SFT in the kidney that was managed with open radical nephrectomy and diagnosis was confirmed using immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION: Awarene

TFE3-positive renal cell carcinoma occurring in three children with dysfunctional kidneys on immunosuppression.

Pediatric RCC is a rare pediatric neoplasm and is distinctly different compared to adult RCC, often demonstrating translocation morphology evidenced by unique histopathological features and TFE3 or TFEB nuclear expression. We report three cases of pediatric TFE3 positive RCC (TFE3-RCC) occurring in the setting of chronic kidney disease and long-term pharmacological immunosuppression, including two cases that developed in the native kidney following kidney transplantation. Together, these cases suggest that the kidney microenvironment in combination with immune dysregulation is likely contribut

Hemangioma with Kaposi's sarcoma-like features: report of two cases.

We describe two children with vascular neoplasms that resembled Kaposi's sarcoma in places. Both presented with intraabdominal masses and severe thrombocytopenia. At autopsy the tumors extensively infiltrated the peritoneum and retroperitoneum and surrounded or invaded numerous organs including the kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract, mesentery, and lymph nodes in both cases, and spleen or bone marrow in one case each. The neoplasms were histologically identical and displayed two patterns: dilated vascular spaces (angiomatous areas) lined by flat endothelial-like cells an

Case report: A rare case of synchronous mucinous neoplasms of the renal pelvis and the appendix.

BACKGROUND: Mucinous neoplasms are tumors arising in the epithelial tissue, characterized by excessive mucin secretion. They mainly emerge in the digestive system and rarely in the urinary system. They also seldom develop in the renal pelvis and the appendix asynchronously or simultaneously. The concurrence of this disease in these two regions has not yet been reported. In this case report, we discuss the diagnosis and treatment of synchronous mucinous neoplasms of the right renal pelvis and the appendix. The mucinous neoplasm of the renal pelvis was preoperatively misdiagnosed as pyonephrosis

Induction of renal pelvic tumours in Sprague-Dawley rats by di-isopropanolnitrosamine.

Transitional cell papillomas and carcinomas of the renal pelvis were observed in Sprague-Dawley rats after subcutaneous (s.c.) treatment with di-isopropranolnitrosamine (DIPN). These tumours occurred unilaterally and appeared as early as 24 weeks after the commencement of treatment. The tumours frequently filled the entire renal pelvis and compressed the kidney parenchyma. The malignant neoplasms demonstrated infiltrative growth into the adjacent medullary parenchyma.

An Unusual Case of Essential Thrombocythemia and Acute Kidney Injury: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of megakaryocytes and sustained thrombocytosis. Although its impact on renal function is not well established, a few case reports have described glomerular involvement and associated kidney impairment. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 79-year-old man with ET and stage 3b/A2 chronic kidney disease (CKD), who was admitted with severe acute kidney injury (AKI). This episode was associated with a progressive rise in platelet count, reaching 1,350,000/μL after discontinu

[Non-sparing surgery of a transplanted kidney].

There is an increasement on the incidence of tumours within the population of renal transplanted, from three to five times over general population. Related to urological tumours, it emphasizes an increase in the incidence of the renal carcinoma, around 4,7% against 3% on general population. In this case, we present a 56-year-old patient, who suffered a renal transplant 8 years ago. Incidentally, it is diagnosed a 3 cm mass at the back face of the transplanted kidney, suggestive of renal neoplasm. Given the characteristics of the mass, of the patient and because of the good graft function, we p

Simultaneous occurrence of renal oncocytoma and B small cell lymphoma in the same kidney: report of two cases.

Two cases of simultaneous occurrence of oncocytoma (OC) associated with small B-cell lymphoma in the same kidney were investigated. Computed tomography, performed for staging purposes, incidentally revealed a small hypo- and hyperattenuating renal mass. Diagnosis of OC was performed on the specimen by morphology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The patients are in complete remission after a vaccinotherapy with follicular dendritic cells. The occurrence of OC and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the same kidney has never been reported. These case reports outline that computerized tomograph

Genetic basis of cancer of the kidney.

Kidney cancer is not a single disease. It is made up of a number of different types of cancer that occur in the kidney, each with a different histologic type, having a different clinical course, responding differently to therapy and caused by a different gene. The identification of families with a predisposition to the development of renal neoplasms, including von Hippel-Lindau (VHL), hereditary papillary renal carcinoma (HPRC), Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD), and hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC), has made possible the identification of the different genes for these cancers. Differentiation of renal neoplasms from high-density cysts: use of attenuation changes between the corticomedullary and nephrographic phases of computed tomography.

PURPOSE: The current study evaluated attenuation changes for proven renal neoplasms between the corticomedullary and the nephrographic phases of a contrast-enhanced computed tomographic (CT) scan as a possible means for differentiating these tumors from the cysts of the kidney when high-density renal masses are detected on a CT scan that does not include a noncontrast baseline. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the CT scans performed on 20 patients with 21 biopsy-proven renal neoplasms, which had been done using standard contrast-enhanced computed tomography only. Attenuation values for th

Renal cell carcinoma in the presence of adult polycystic kidney disease.

A case of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease associated with widely metastatic renal cell carcinoma is reported. The patient had presented with pneumothorax, weight loss, leukocytosis, lytic bone lesions, and hypercalcemia. Despite intensive diagnostic search for a neoplasm, no firm evidence of malignancy was found. However, at the autopsy, widely metastatic, papillary renal cell carcinoma was found originating in the left kidney. Many metastases showed central necrosis mimicking small cysts.

Update of a mortality study of workers in petroleum refineries.

A large cohort of petroleum refinery workers with long duration of employment, long latency, and relatively young age at hire had its vital status updated through Dec. 31, 1980. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for all causes was 78. Each nonneoplastic cause had an SMR below 100, including SMRs of 63 for emphysema and for all diseases of the genitourinary system and of 73 for chronic nephritis. The SMR for all cancers was 87. SMRs for specific neoplasms included digestive system, 90; lung, 85; kidney, 68; brain, 89; leukemia, 101; multiple myeloma, 123; unspecified lymphoma, 112; polycyt

A case of solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney.

A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an unusual spindle cell neoplasm that usually occurs in the pleura but has recently been described in diverse extrapleural sites. Urogenital localization is rare and to our knowledge, only 39 cases of SFT of the kidney have been described. Although SFT of the kidney is extremely rare, this tumor must be included in the differential diagnosis, whenever a renal tumor consisting of mesenchymal elements is encountered. We report a case of a large SFT of the right kidney which was clinically and radiologically thought to be renal cell carcinoma and a final diagnosi

Solitary fibrous tumour of the renal peripelvis.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. This report describes two SFTs arising in the renal peripelvis, occurring in 33- and 36-year-old females. The lesions lacked the characteristic features of other recognized neoplasms that occur in the kidney. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were diffusely and strongly positive for vimentin and CD34, and some tumour cells expressed alpha-smooth muscle actin. Both tumours were diploid by flow cytometry. Both patients have had benign clinical courses with 7

Detection of malignant soft tissue tumors in bone imaging.

A total of 2530 consecutive bone scans were examined to evaluate the number and the type of soft tissue neoplasms detected with bone-seeking phosphonates. Sixty-eight primary or secondary soft tissue neoplasms of 63 patients accumulated 99mTc -methylene diphosphonate and 2 accumulated 99mTc -diphosphonate, and one metastasis was seen as a nonactive 'cold' focus in the urinary bladder. The localization of tumors was: 19 in the lung, 15 in the liver, 11 in the kidney, 10 in the peritoneal cavity or ascites, 5 in the large bowel, 4 in the vascular or lymphatic system, 3 in the connective tissue o
