Knee ligamentous injuries occur during sport, and when there is extensive injury, they can be associated with subluxation or dislocation. We present the case of a female basketball player who sustained a knee dislocation during noncontact play. An immediate angiogram confirmed vascular integrity, and surgical treatment with ligamentous reconstruction was performed. Peroneal nerve injury was present but resolved in 42 weeks. A review of the literature discussing knee dislocation is presented.

Fifteen knees with patellar dislocation after total knee arthroplasty had realignment of the extensor mechanism using a modification of the Trillat procedure. The onset of dislocation occurred on average 4.7 months from the time of surgery. After total knee arthroplasty the patients had an average range of motion of 109 degrees. All patients had medialization of the tibial tubercle and lateral release. No patient had a recurrent dislocation after a minimum 2-year follow-up period. The average knee score was 82 and the average flexion arc was 112 degrees. All but one of the osteotomies healed u

INTRODUCTION: Dissociation of the knee joint, or knee dislocations (KD), can lead to severe complications, often resulting in multiligament injuries. A subset of these injuries are irreducible by closed reduction and require open reduction. Identifying KDs that necessitate surgical intervention is crucial for optimal outcomes. While previous studies have explored various risk factors, the influence of associated fractures is less understood.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We queried the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) database from 2017 to 2021, for non-congenital closed knee dislocations r

BACKGROUND: Recurrent patellar dislocation in combination with cartilage injures are difficult injuries to treat with confounding pathways of treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and functional outcomes of patients operated for patellofemoral instability with and without cartilage defects.
METHODS: Eighty-two patients (mean age 28.8 years) with recurrent patellar dislocations, who underwent soft-tissue or bony procedures, were divided into two matched groups (age, sex, follow up and type of procedure) of 41 each, based on the presence or absence of cartilage defects in

This case presents a patient who sustained a knee dislocation, and who due to her diagnosis of sarcoidosis, other comorbidities, and prolonged use of corticosteroids, external fixation and physical therapy were implemented versus soft tissue reconstruction/repair. Research indicates worse functional outcomes with non-surgical treatment, and guidelines on optimising outcomes in this population are lacking. Integrated care of the patient-even when complex injuries and comorbid medical conditions are present-can lead to positive functional recovery, despite previous data. Evidence from related in

BACKGROUND: Congenital dislocation of the knee (CDK) is a rare condition for which the treatment is difficult and remains controversial. The aim of this case series is to evaluate the results of limited open quadriceps release for treatment of CDK.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with CDK were managed at our institute from May 2006 to May 2014, and included 10 boys and 6 girls, with a mean age at presentation of 5 weeks (range, 1 to16 wk). Three patients who had an underlying neuromuscular syndrome were excluded. The remaining 13 patients had no identifiable syndrome. There were 9 bilateral cases a

BACKGROUND: Knee dislocations from minor trauma have been reported sparsely in the literature. The consensus is that these injuries tend not to be associated with neurovascular compromise.
PURPOSE: To present a series of atraumatic knee dislocations in obese and morbidly obese patients and to compare operative versus conservative treatment.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: This study included 19 patients (21 knees) who presented with knee dislocation from a low-velocity or ultra low-velocity incident. Charts, radiographs, and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were re

Multiple ligament injured knee is a heterogenous group of injuries, which remains a challenging entity for physicians to manage. Complications that are associated with this severe injury can occur from the injury itself or can arise from emergency or definitive treatment. The development of these complications can alter management options and compromise patient outcomes.

This retrospective study evaluated outcome and associated complications in 48 patients with 50 knee dislocations treated between 1968 and 1993. Average follow-up was 8.3 years. Thirty-one knees underwent operative treatment, and 19 knees underwent nonoperative treatment. Open dislocations occurred in 26%.of knees, and associated injuries occurred in 58%. Peroneal nerve injuries occurred most frequently (36%), followed by popliteal artery injuries (24%). Six knees treated nonoperatively required either above-knee amputation (4) or knee arthrodesis (2). Mean Lysholm at follow-up was 80.2 and Hos

Congenital dislocation of the knee (CDK) is a rare disease and may be associated with other congenital and musculoskeletal disorders. We report our result in the treatment of a patient with CDK and DDH that treated with serial casting and Pavlik harness. Early diagnosis of the CDK is very important non operative treatment usually provides more stabile, greater range of motion and much more quadriceps strength than the surgical treatment. Early reduction of dislocation prevents formation of the knee contracture.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to review the need for angiography among patients with traumatic knee dislocations, and to evaluate any adverse consequences associated with the clinical decision to pursue or defer angiography.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for 55 patients (57 knees) with traumatic knee dislocation during a 7-year period. The presence or absence of arterial injury was assessed via physical examination (to determine presence of foot pulses and ankle-brachial index > or = 0.80) and, in selected cases, via angiography.
RESULTS: At the vascular examination, 32 knee

Congenital dislocation of the knee is a rare condition. It results in an inability to flex the knee. The condition is normally diagnosed clinically during the neonatal period and is verified by X-ray and/or ultrasound. Treatment is preferably non-operative with gradually increased passive flexion of the knee. In certain cases surgery may be justified. In a majority of cases, the children achieve acceptable knee-function after treatment. In the region of Sundsvall-Härnösand in Sweden, during the past seven years five children with congenital dislocation of the knee were born, which is a conside

Thirty-nine patients with 43 complete knee dislocations managed between 1973 and 1990 were reviewed retrospectively to compare the results of surgical reconstruction to nonreconstructive treatment of these injuries. The average patient age was 34 years and the average follow-up was 5 years (range: 1 to 18 years). Patients were evaluated by physical examination and the Lysholm knee scoring scale. Fourteen knees (33%) sustained popliteal vessel injury and five (9%) required amputation. Peroneal and tibial nerve injuries involved 13 knees (30%). Twenty-five of 39 patients (64%) sustained other as

The results are reported from a study of 103 cases fitted with the knee splint harness (KSH) which is an orthotic device used for the treatment of congenital subluxation and dislocation of the hip. The knee splint harness consists of a harness attached to posterior plastic shells at the knee which prevent flexion beyond 90 degrees while permitting full and free knee extension. No case was encountered in a 10 year period which failed to reduce. In cases of hip subluxation, reduction was obtained within an average of 5.8 days. In cases of dislocation, reduction was obtained in 6.7 days on averag

All patients with a diagnosis of knee dislocation during a 7 1/2-year period (1984-1991) were reviewed retrospectively. There were 37 knee dislocations (KDs) in 35 patients. The mechanism of injury was predominantly motor vehicle or pedestrian crashes. Popliteal artery injury was present in 6 of 37 (16%). There was no significant vascular injury in 31 of 37 knee dislocations as evidenced by normal arteriograms or absence of vascular complications on follow-up. Of those with no significant vascular injury, 3 of 31 had limb ischemia that improved with reduction of the KD, had normal arteriograms

Congenital dislocation of the knee is a rare disorder that has been reported previously in association with neuromuscular disorders and ligamentous laxity syndromes and is related to mechanical factors. Concurrent chromosomal abnormalities have not been reported previously with congenitally dislocated knees. The authors present a case of congenitally dislocated knees in a patient with an extremely rare and only recently described partial deletion of chromosome I. There have been three previously reported cases of this particular chromosomal deletion, none of which included dislocated joints.
