Schistosomiasis and Infertility: What Do We Know?

There is increasing attention on the complex interactions occurring between schistosome parasites and their hosts. However, little is known about the occurrence, epidemiology, and mechanisms of schistosomiasis-associated infertility. In this article, we argue that an in-depth understanding of the interplay between parasites and the host endocrine system may significantly enhance current knowledge of infertility in infected individuals. We discuss the basic hormonal mechanisms that may lead to the discovery of entirely novel anthelmintic interventions against schistosomiasis.

Pathophysiology and treatment of typical and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a rare disease, frequently responsible for renal insufficiency in children. Recent findings have led to renewed interest in this pathology. The discovery of new gene mutations in the atypical form of HUS and the experimental data suggesting the involvement of the complement pathway in the typical form, open new perspectives for treatment. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on both typical and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome pathophysiology and examines new perspectives for treatment.

Testing genotypes-phenotype relationships using permutation tests on association rules.

Association rule mining is a knowledge discovery technique which informs researchers about relationships between variables in data. These relationships can be focused to a specific set of response variables. We propose an augmented version of this method to discover groups of genotypes which relate to specific outcomes. We derive the methodology to find these candidate groups of genotypes and illustrate how the method works on data regarding neuroinvasive complications of West Nile virus and through simulation.

Giovanni Nigro and the Naples's school: historical contribution to the knowledge of heart involvement in Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophies.

It is now accepted worldwide that cardiac involvement in Duchenne and Becker muscular Dystrophies, is a constant feature. The concurrent impairment of the heart as a muscle in dystrophic process was an inspired idea by Prof. Giovanni Nigro ten years before the discovery of the dystrophin gene, occurred in 1987. This article is intended to be a recognition to him and to the Neapolitan School he directed for the contribution in the knowledge of cardiac involvement in the course of Duchenne (DMD) and Becker (BMD) Muscular Dystrophies and in DMD/BMD carriers.

Among the fibers: A multimodality imaging review of intramuscular mass lesions.

The common presentations of patient complaints regarding the musculoskeletal system, such as pain, swelling, and restriction of movement, lead to the imaging discovery of various lesions often located in, or arising from, skeletal muscle in the region of interest. Knowledge of the patients' clinical history, laboratory parameters, and various imaging characteristics of the implicated lesions would assist the radiologist in coming to a timely, reasonably accurate conclusion about the etiology of the patient's complaints, the severity of disease, and in directing patient therapy.

Asynchronous bilateral torsion of the spermatic cord in the newborn: a case report.

Asynchronous bilateral torsion of the spermatic cord in the newborn is extremely rare. We report such a case in a 4-day-old boy with subsequent operative discovery of prior in utero torsion of the contralateral spermatic cord. The diagnosis was made by physical examination, transillumination test, color Doppler ultrasound, and confirmed by emergent surgical exploration. To our knowledge, the present case is the 6th case of asynchronous bilateral torsion of the spermatic cord in the English literature, and the first case in Korea.

Microproteins at the Frontiers of Biology and Medicine.

Small proteins, known as microproteins, typically consisting of fewer than 150 amino acids, have recently emerged as a previously unrecognized class of functional genes in biology. Advances in ribosome profiling, proteogenomics, and genome-wide functional screens have revealed that thousands of small open reading frames are actively translated, producing microproteins, some of which regulate essential processes in metabolism, immunity, cancer, and neurodegeneration. These discoveries have challenged long-held assumptions that gene function is confined to large, conserved proteins and have unde

Renal Osteodystrophy-Time for Common Nomenclature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The term renal osteodystrophy has been used to describe a wide variety of bone problems facing patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Here, we review the history of the use of this term. RECENT FINDINGS: Bone disease resulting from CKD was first noticed in 1890. The term "renal osteodystrophy" was used to define the bone disease in 1942. Since then, important discoveries have increased our knowledge of the complexities of bone physiology in these patients. At the same time, secular changes in the disease have occurred. The terms used to describe the bone histological f

Non-coding RNA variations in oral cancers: A comprehensive review.

For a long time, scientists believed that only changes or mutations in protein-coding genes were responsible for the onset and development of cancer. However, the discovery of non-coding RNAs has revolutionized our understanding of tumor biology. Now, we are aware that non-coding RNA molecules have a higher influence on cancer biology than previously thought. The discovery of non-coding RNAs also presented several challenges because they are relatively unstable under laboratory conditions and can lead to false-positive and false-negative results in expression analysis. Therefore, variation ana

Genetic susceptibility to breast cancer.

Genetic and lifestyle/environmental factors are implicated in the aetiology of breast cancer. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on rare high penetrance mutations, as well as moderate and low-penetrance genetic variants implicated in breast cancer aetiology. We summarize recent discoveries from large collaborative efforts to combine data from candidate gene studies, and to conduct genome-wide association studies (GWAS), primarily in breast cancers in the general population. These findings are compared with results from collaborative efforts aiming to identify genetic modifie

Accelerated discovery of highly active enzyme nanohybrids with parallelized Bayesian optimization in hybrid space.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly advanced protein engineering, enabling rapid enzyme evolution for diverse applications. However, the fragile nature of biomacromolecules requires enzyme immobilization to preserve catalytic activity under harsh industrial conditions, which often restricts substrate diffusion and reduces enzymatic activity. This challenge demands extensive trial-and-error experiments to optimize immobilized carriers with high activity for different enzymes. Here we show a machine-learning-guided workflow along with an algorithm named parallelized hybrid-space Bayes
